NASCARCommerce City has been dropped as a potential site for a NASCAR racetrack, making opponents happy and bringing hope to other possible sites - including Aurora.

The International Speedway Corp. said Wednesday in a letter to Commerce City Mayor Paul Natale that sites in other cities have emerged as better overall opportunities for the racetrack.

ISC executive Wesley Harris said the 1,300-acre parcel the company was considering near Denver International Airport was not compatible with its needs.

A community galvanizing against the racetrack also played a role in the ISC’s backing out of Commerce City, Harris said.

“It was a combination of factors,” he said. “And clearly, we listen closely to what’s going on in the communities we are looking at.”

Kathy McIntyre, a resident of the Reunion housing development close to the racetrack site, was happy about the decision.

“It’s a good day in Commerce City,” she said. “We banded together to make sure our quality of life wouldn’t be ruined by this track, and it worked.”

I have been watching Nascar for 6 years now and your right
the racing is terrible! It almost seems like nascar is fixing race’s
with all of the caution’s. Nascar needs to get there act together!

Great decision. Look at all the BS they have avoided. Maybe a local will come in and provide something besides a “tabloid program.

Why? They couldn’t sellout the place when it was in operation. BTW, isn’t that the excuse many use to take one event from Fontana?

Why, because you suffer from HDS? (Hendrick Derangement Syndrome) I have to ask, did you feel the same when Roush had 5 of 10 spots in the Chase locked in?

But more to the point, can you name a single racing series world-wide that offers competition as close as NASCAR?

News flash: Races arent selling out in a lot of places. And I personally would like to see Rockingham back on the circuit. Fontana sucks they should call it Cali-borin-ya. What a snooze fest.

They gave Cali Rockinghams race cause Rockingham wasnt selling out and (hey Nascar brainiacs) Fontanna aint selling out either. Eventhough there are 14 million people living within a 2 hour drive from the track. If the biggest market in the country cant sell 80.000 seats , then give Kentucky a race and watch it sell out 6 months in advance.

Personally I am disapointed in this decision. I feel there is a need to bring another track to this part of the country and I hope that anywhere, Colorado is still being considered if not in Commerce City.
