Dale Earnhardt, JrPepsi’s decision to pull its sponsorships of International Speedway Corp. racetracks was the first step in the company’s plans to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr. when he drives at Hendrick Motorsports next year.

According to industry sources, Pepsi’s Mountain Dew soft drink now is the leader to sponsor Earnhardt Jr. next year.

ISC, which includes the Daytona International Speedway and half of the tracks on the Nextel Cup Series schedule, will have its deal with Pepsi phased out as contracts expire. Pepsi’s deal with Daytona includes Saturday night’s Pepsi 400, but that contract expires after the race.

Pepsi plans to re-direct the money it spends with racetracks to Earnhardt Jr.

Hendrick Motorsports is talking with several companies to sponsor Earnhardt Jr., the most popular driver in racing. Budweiser, Earnhardt Jr.’s current sponsor, is working to remain with him, but Pepsi’s Mountain Dew brand has become the clear front-runner.

DuPont currently has the most-expensive sponsorship deal in the sport at $20 million with Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports. Mountain Dew is expected to challenge, if not beat, that standard.

Well, isn’t this just de-ja-vu? Not that long ago, a man by the name of DW switched sponsors from Budweiser to Mountain Dew. I’m a Coke person myself, but nonetheless, I’ve always loved Mountain Dew. I hope he gets this deal. Not only would I love to see Dew back in NASCAR, but I’d drink it a helluva lot more.

  2. 2 Jarrod

Chris, I like the way that sounds. I too remember that switch and it has been a while since Mountain Dew was on a car, sounds promising.

  3. 3 Mike

Mountain Dew is a child’s drink.

  4. 4 Budman

So, JR nation will be walking around in ridiculous looking green and yellow shirts and hats?

  5. 5 Brandon

hahahahaha The tracks are gonna go from all red in the stands at Talledega to all Green/Yellow HAHAHAHAH thats hilarious

  6. 6 Andy

Just a week ago Monster was the front runner for Junior.

I really am not buying any of this, not saying it’s not going to happen but I’m not confident this would happen.

And if thats the case, I think Mountain Dew should change their bottle color to red. :]

I don’t look good in green and yellow. haha

  7. 7 Chris

    Mountain Dew Code Red.

That could be a one race thing and we could all see the stands turn red for a weekend, and then back to green and yellow.

    If that was to happen.

Should be interesting to see how this all goes with who sponsers Jr. next year. We will all just have to wait and see, but I see the Mt. Dew thing as a possible good thing.

  9. 9 twb

no yellow in the dew label red green looking at a bottle right now ya’ll are thinking of mellow yellow get over it the fans wont care 1 of his 1st cars was a sundrop car look it up #8 dew car nice

I don’t drink beer so I won’t wear budwiser shirts.. I am hopeing that he goes with
a non alcholic beverage or sponser.. so with the risk of sounding corny Go Jr you can
    Dew it..

  11. 11 RedDevil

    just another rumor to me..

  12. 12 Br0ken

Is JR staying with the 8 car or no? Has anyone heard of any word of that? And about Mt. Dew sponsoring Jr, that would be awesome. I like MT. Dew. But I prefer Sprite more ;]

  13. 13 Cybil

I hate the color green but I guess I am going to have to get used to it if this actually happens. I used to drink nothing but Mountain Dew in my younger days…and all of my children are dew drinkers. I myself only drink diet pepsi. I could handle those colors…lite blue, dark blue and alittle red…

  14. 14 tracey

I DONT CARE WHO SPONSERS DALE HES MY MAN ..

  15. 15 Anonymous

this is a hard one for me and it will piss me off lots more than i thought

  16. 16 loco

look until i see jr on video saying whats going on i dont belive it

and i dont care if he drives a shopping cart drawn by mules beatin them with a china berry limb racing for a ice cream cone
jr is my `driver get em junebug

it sucks that he went from the best beer in the world to the shitest soda that rots your teeth fraster than tweek! i think that bud is now going for the mamas boy look with kasey. what next gordon to kotex?

  18. 18 Odessa

I think it’s great. My son who is 8. But as tall as I am (5′3) almost, has to wear adult med. shirts. He of course is unable to support his favorite driver at school. Can’t wear Bud on his shirt!! So although I like wearing the Bud, it would be nice if he did change, that way my son is not limited to what he can wear. We even started buying Jr. Motorsports gear just so he can wear something of Jrs.

  19. 19 michael

to let everyone know, NO, THE #8 IS NOT GOING TO DALE JR. i do work with nascar, and to ease all rumors, DEI dose not own the #8, nascar owns that number, and it,s leased to DEI, and DEI can not break that lease until the end of the race year of 2010, he will probily stay with the #5 car, and bud is not staying with Dale Jr. eaither, they are looking at 2 other drivers, 1 being Kahne, the other hasnt been announced.

  20. 20 TT

Michael, you are correct on the number issue except for the fact that NASCAR already has said that DEI and Hendrick could work out a deal to transfer the number….not that I think it’ll happen (I don’t) but nevertheless it is still a possibility.

  21. 21 michael

well that is news to me, since i attend the daily meetings and nothing has been brought to my attition on this, and the last we heard from DEI they wasnt interested at this time to release that number. where did u hear about this, i will have to check into this further.

  22. 22 INTIMIDATOR FAN

I agree with Loco. I don’t care what he’s driving or what color it is as long as it’s going faster than everybody else and stuck to track.

WE ARE READY TO SEE SOME BURNOUTS JUNEBUG!!!!

  23. 23 Axel Foley

    Amen.

I’m also not buying into this yet either after all the other rumors and misdirection played by people in the sport. I am curious to see what happens. I could care less what color or sponsor he ends up with. All I need is a black shirt with Earnhardt on it, that covers it. Red was never my color anyways.

Not if you mix it with vodka….mmmmmmmmmmm

  25. 25 buddy

    Whats mountain DEW?

  26. 26 Didi

Wow. Junior and Mountain Dew? This is gonna be good. I mean, I just bought the black Bud jacket and still have the red one, but I guess I’ll get accustomed to looking like a lemon/lims skittle :P Either way, I’m still rooting for Dale Jr. 8, no 8……Red or Yellow and green. Hendrick or whoever we all wished he drove for. It has nadda to do with the driver

BTW: Mountain Dew + Grey Goose = Better than Vodka & Red Bull ANYDAY!

  27. 27 gigolo george

The used car salesmen that run NASCAR and sponsorship deals are all full of crap!! We’ll just have to wait and see once they have the press conference with the new paint scheme.
