Montoya blames Stewart for coming-together at Texas
Quote selected text Published April 15th, 2007 in NASCAR News
Juan Pablo Montoya has blamed Tony Stewart of their incident during the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway saying the former Cup champion forced him into the situation by being too aggressive.
On lap 240 Montoya was trying to overtake Stewart for eighth place on the inside of Turn 4. Out of the previous corner, Stewart had forced Montoya to move to the inside in order to force the Colombian to make a slower entry into the next corner. As they went into Turn 4, the rear of Montoya’s car moved and then started to move up the track until making contact with the No. 20 car of Stewart.
“You can ask any driver, when you go low and the other guy just pins you down you lose some of the side grip in the car and you’re going to get loose,” Montoya stated after the race. “He was going in high enough that I couldn’t run high but low enough to really get me loose. “I understand we’re racing and I’m okay with it. But if he does that, it’s going to get to a point if I want to pass him I’m going to go in a little deeper to make sure that I run a little bit harder.”
Montoya had already battled with Stewart a couple of times before the incident happened, but despite racing each other hard, there had been no contact until now. The Colombian believes however that Stewart then got too aggressive with him.
“I haven’t seen [the video] but we just touched a little bit in the middle of the corner. I got really loose on the brakes going in and I just went into him a little bit. Before that we were racing pretty clean. “I think generally the way it works here is somebody gets a run beside you and you try to run a little higher to make sure you give the guy enough air and you give him room. “Otherwise it’s the other way around. I think if you race like that, people will still race you clean. He did that before. I don’t know why he was so aggressive. We still had like 100 laps to go.”

JPM and Tony was just a racing deal. Fault both of them. My question is. What about Tony Stewart being over aggressive coming out of the pits and spinning witch crashed the 2nd and 3rd place drivers.
Now dont get me worng i do like tony as a driver but what gives?
Someone just needs to give that ego tripper Juan Pablo a slap in the head,…that might fix him.
Montoya is the dirtiest and arrogant racer in motor sports. He should be banned from racing, let him go back to go karts. He was just a rotten in formula 1, any one that he could not outdrive, he would ram to put them out of the race. Why do you think he is not in F1 any longer, his actions speak for themselves, disgusting!
Face it Montoya you can’t drive for crap, I hope Tony runs you into the wall next time. Don’t blame everyone else for your lack of driving skills, I don’t think you’ll last very long in Nascar. Tony Stewart rules..get him first next time..show us some of your old spark Tony!!
But what really tee’s me off is as Tony said , IF that had been stewart , NASCAR and the media would have been all over him for the rest of the season .
This is the second time that Montoya has bumped someone like that , and he dont know what happened ….. yeah right !!!!!!!!

Montoya should be fined heavily&suspended for a peroid of time.
Just like an ________________ to make such idiotic comments. How the hell do you think all the other drivers got there experience. I love the way Tony drives, but lets face it he’s the numero uno “BAD BOY” in NASCAR. IN ADDITION, HISPANICS NOT SPICS, ARE TAKING OVER THE COUNTRY. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET WHAT THE HELL PLANET ARE YOU ON ANYWAY. DIDN’T YOUR MAMA TEACH YOU ANY RESPECT FOR THE HUMAN RACE.

MY GOSH! What the hell are they doing in the press? Isn’t this called Racing? Those cars are flyingaroung that track and are within inches of each other. A little bump here and there will cause a car to spin out. and Montoya didn’t do anything wrong. Just because He is still a nobody in Nextel yet and still trying to prove himself do doesn’t mean he isn’t a great driver. You have to be a great driver to get in this race. As for tony, I like toony too but why can’t people see that the big name drivers make mistake’s also. Montoya didn’t have anything to do with some of those other drivers. So Lets not point fingers at any one driver. This sucks taht they make one person the bad guy.
lets face it,i’ve been racing for twenty years on the local circuit,
i’ve seen them come and go,i’ve fought with all of them, but one thing
i can say is if you race them hard they will race you hard,Mr.Pablo did not do anything different than Tony would of done or anyone else!it just seems tony is getting a little of his own medicine, look at the guy he came back out onto the track
and causes a wreck that took out guys that were having there best
races of the season.in the big leagues there is more at stake,so
there has to be more giving than taking,i think all of them needs to
there grass roots to relearn how to race!!!!!!quit crying tony!
Tony lost his temper due to Montoya’s take everyone out driving style. The unfortunate part is that he took out Dale Jr. who he is good buddies with.
He needs to learn to keep his emotions in check cuz every time he goes out like a hothead he ends up wrecking himself and or somebody else. You think he would have learned that by now.
Montoya is learning there’s no two ways about it. The problum is he dosen’t realize he’s still learning. He dosen’t apologize for anything even when it’s his fault either by accident or just not knowing any better. This is the reason people think him arrogant, because in a way he is. He’s not in Indy he’s in NASCAR now things are different. You Can’t take what you’ve learned in one and apply it seamlessly to the other. He thinks he’s got something to prove out there, and in a way he dose, the media is pushing him, and he probably dose see himself as the outsider in yes a redneck race. I am proud to consider myself a redneck, redneck is american no other way around it. Montoya has GOT to sit back and think things through more, he can’t keep pushing so hard because it’s not making him any friends on the track. Or off for that matter.
As far as what happend sunday i’m not surprised. He couldn’t get past Stewart by doing what he knew best so he tried somthing new and paid the price. It was a simple mistake by a rookie driver that cost four other top drivers badly. What he should have done is say he got loose he did’t knwo what happend he made a mistake and say he’ll learn from it. Instead he’s blaming others. that is ARROGANCE. That is why i don’t like him and want him OUT of NASCAR.
All you seem to think that JPM is such a jerk and did such a terrible thing, surely don’t remember the intimidator, Dale Ernhart.

Folks, leave the racial slurs and the name calling of each other at home please!
A lot of people aren’t happy with Montoya’s driving the past couple races and I’d have to say I’m one of them. I don’t like what he’s doing to Nascar and I’d rather him just go back to the kind of racing he can handle.
MONTOYA IS AN IDIOT (TO PUT IT NICELY). HEY TACO, LEARN HOW TO DRIVE OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS AMERICAN SPORT, NORTH AMERICAN THAT IS.
I have my favorites that I root for each race, but to be truthful most of the drivers on todays big tracks are lucky to be there period. They are the same rich guys who get to race no matter what happens. I am sure there are many unknown people who can, with alittle time race as hard or harder then the guys we see every weekend, but will never get the chance to prove it. This is a rich mans sport and they should be happy they are the chosen ones who get paid to do it. I should have said overpaid to do it. Motorsports are only for the rich and most of us can’t afford to even buy tickets for our families to watch a race live let alone participate. My dad used to own a top fuel dragster in the “60’s” when it wasn’t uncommon to have a 100 cars show up for a meet. The 1st round was 32 cars not 16 because it was affordable and fun. Someday there won’t be 16 top fuel cars even show up because of the price tag on racing. This racing thing is all about who can sell themselves to sponsors or who can afford to sell themselves.
Montoya is still learning how to drive the cars here and whatnot. He needs to learn that you can’t just bump someone like that and expect it to be fine, they are going to wreck with that type of bump and hes going to learn the hard way.
-Chris
Well, am I mistaken or is this called racing or not!?!? Wrecks are part of it, accidents happen, true it would be nice when someone makes a mistake if they could admit it, and if the media, fans, and drivers, would just learn to then let it go and look ahead to the next race. i just didn’t see anything I thought was intentional yesterday, by Stewart or Montoya, maybe i’m wrong, but I still think thats just part of racing……the point is to race hard and win! I beleive thats what they both were trying to do.
And, yes, it really sucks when your favorite driver(s) get took out because of an accident, ( I was pretty pissed myself yesterday)but just remember they’ve also been the taker outers a few times themselves. But, that’s why I love racing!!! Its alot of give and take, and the good drivers will always make it back to victory lane, and take the checkered flag!Let’s get em next week Jr.!
No one didnt do anything wrong, it was good racing, some fans arent ever happy, they complain one day, youd hear them say, aw man the old days were great, beatin and bangin, slammin, and then cup guys do that like they always have, and someone they like gets wrecked, now beatin and bangin isnt good, and its dirty. Montoya doesnt deserve as much credit as he gets for getting into a stock car, hes a CHAMPION race car driver, not some rookie who dont know where hes at, everybodys like i cant believe how good hes doing, he isnt doing that great, i mean decent, but considering, hes a champion race car driver, it aint that great.
send that rat bastard back to wherever hes from. i dont wanna see em here. i am not uneducated, republican redneck, i simply dont believe in letting people like that participate in a sport that was started by guys tryn to outrun cops on the backroads. get w it people!
Well maybe if Stewart would stop trying to school the rookies and rough them up everytime they get beside him then there wouldn’t be an issue! mJPM just got loose under him anyway, strictly a racing deal…the two laps prior when Tony slammed into him about 3 times were definitely uncalled for so if there was frustration from Juan, it was much deserved that “Smokes” dumbass got smoked!
JPM needs a reality check. He’s at fault for the accident. He needs to remember that he isn’t the worlds best driver in his class anymore. He’s nothin more than a lowly rookie with a few championships in ANOTHER class under his belt.
JPM should be appologizing to Tony for not lockign down and turning hard to keep his car on the bottom of the track. If you watch that scene in slow motion and use the incar information given my NASCAR you realize that JPM broke loose, lost his acceleration for a moment and then stomped back into the gas as he normally would mid corner and slid way up the track COLLECTING Tony and causing the accident.
I sincerely home that he now gets to experience the wonders of havign fucked with a favorite Nascar driver. I’d love to know how allmighty and great he feels when 180,000 people are booing his ass when he starts the next race.
New Montoya fan here, Stewart’s ego can’t take a bigger star in Nascar than himself.
i like wat dave an bret said. for one u cant blame nobody for spinnin at martinsville. that shit happens all the time. most of yall is too uptight about the fact that he colombian than anything else. an i think yall is the fools idiots etc. texas was the best racin i seen all year. an y yall gotta get all on motoyas case. hey guess what??? REALITY CHECK: wat happened on lap one wit ragan and yeley? i rest my case cause aint no one sayin nothin bout that. jus proves that most of the ppl up here is a bunch of racist fools. dont even care about the racin at all. thats wats pitiful.
“send that rat bastard back to wherever hes from. i dont wanna see em here. i am not uneducated, republican redneck, i simply dont believe in letting people like that participate in a sport that was started by guys tryn to outrun cops on the backroads. get w it people!”
Could have fooled me! People like that? We must realize that stopping people from doing something is why the bootleggers were running from the police in the first place. Further more JPM is doing better than some other rookie drivers did in past years. It is racing I think people are making such a big deal because of nationality, and the fact that open wheel, and NASCAR fans fight over what real racing is. Just let racers be racers. I suspect that a good number of the people who are against JPM have never driven any kind of racecar except may be at a “racecar driving school” under controlled conditions. I would think the transition from open wheel to NASCAR would be like going from a dirt late model to a “4 cylinder” (no disrespect just an example) they handle completely different.
Amanda keep your rascist thoughts to yourself. Every other nationality has an equal right to compete in Nascar. As for the rest, I mainly put the blame on Kyle for not using his brakes like an idiot. However, I believe Stewart should have been more aware that of who he was around. He just exited the pits, not up to speed fully, and he tries to get in the line behind Busch in front of the leaders (top3). Obviously he made a mistake somewhere and spun. I just wished he would have waited till he completely clear and not putting one at risk. And since he WASN’t up to speed, he could have gotten rear ended as well. But who knows, maybe the spotter told him he had more room between him and the leaders.
Is it just me or does it seem that the few times Juan has had a decent finish he’s run another driver over on the way? Dang the guy even took his own teamate out and now Smoke and on top of that he’s blaming Smoke. Sorry Juan but in NASCAR the drivers race they don’t just pullover and let you go, but you should be thankful that Tony has changed from a few years back or you’d more than likely be caring yourself a good old a$$ whipping for a few days i’d really like to see you do that and use the same excuse with a good ole boy at a Sat. nite stock car race.
As far as you people bashing Juan about his race you really can’t blame him for that NASCAR is the idiot in that aspect the more drivers they can get from other countries or from other races the happier they are because of all the press they get from it. As far as my opinion of Juan you’re a heck of a racer not much of a driver though and in my opinion you’re a disgrace to Texaco I wonder how many times Davey has turned over know that a complete idiot is driving his car now?
Keep Digging SMOKE!!!!!!!!!

My question is this: how did Montoya get a competition license?
Better yet, why is he in Cup? He needs to be in Busch or ARCA. He may think he’s all that, but one thing’s for sure: he’s not making any friends or earning any fans. As far as Stewart causing a wreck, that’s not what the video shows. If he can’t learn to keep the car going in a straight line, he needs to learn how to use the brake pedal to slow down.
“i am not uneducated, republican redneck”, WOW! Why don’t we use proper grammar…
Hey Guy! You’re badmouthing the best driver in the WORLD! Not in N. America or wherever but this little fricken rock we all call Earth…he is also one of the most popular figures in ALL of motorsports. Swallow your pride and accept the fact that he’s better than your beloved Dale Jr., Tony Stewart, Jeff gordon, Jimmie Johnson…I’m sorry to say but if this website doesn’t want people to make vulgar comments then they need to stop posting stories that cause racial conflicts, you’re to blame too!
if a white guy did this ythen it woodnt be such a issue. get the fuck over ureselves. o and by the way. mopntoya got a competition license because he applied for it not to mention hes a champion around the world. thats sad if its that hard to figure out how he got one. i jus sent a app. form in the mail and i got my license. that simple. i think everybodies pissed off cuz montoya showed up to race and not be a pussy.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boys!!! this is RACING!!
i never have been a formula fan so I don’t know anything
of Montoya’s reputation.
However; it seems that Tony can’t take what he’s so well known
for dishing out! Throw in the towel and retire, Tony!!!
Just another fine example of how mature you are, I’m gonna quit,
I’m gonna whine….grow up already!!
To “Guy” who posted “where did Montoya get his competition license?” I’ll tell ya where,…out of a Cracker Jack box! The toy inside was a fake license.
Has Tony ever won the Indy 500? I know tried more than once. Has Tony the master of open wheel racing, USAC, IRL, F1, oh thats rite he’s never driven F1!
all of you are _______ for saying Montoya cant drive… he is aggressive, i agree. however the man knows how to drive. why are you defending tony? he is a whiny little bitch, who wrecked and then came out of the pits to take two contenders for the win completely out of the race because he had a little tantrum. he has proven this in the past
idk how many of you watch IRL, CART, F1, etc, but montoya is one of the best drivers in the world. he is used to road racing, and i think he still has some more adapting to do in learning how to pass on high-speed ovals.
Good grief…talk about some of you acting like a bunch of rednecks…I hate to think that some of you are actually representing this sport! You have to expect an accident or two from time to time. I would love to get thru one race without an accident, but that’s racing. No one is perfect! GO JPM! Show these guys how good you are!
Somone mentioned what would have happend years ago if the “Intimidator” had done what Montoya had done. there is a simple answer to that question, and it also explains why people are angry with Montoya. It’s not racism, has nothing to do with that, it’s Montoya’s response. See years ago when asked what happend if he had done what Montoya did, Earnhardt would have said thats racing and shrugged it off. Thats why he was the “Intimidator”. And thats why people respected him, he excepted his mistakes or what he had done on purpose he didn’t try and blame others. Montoya is blaming Stewart for the accident on sunday. Look at the Video Stewart was nearly two cars widths ABOVE Montoya,. He wasn’t squeezing him or forcing him to do anything, What he WAs doing IS racing, he wouldn’t let Montoya go on the high side and get around him.
Answer this. Has Montoya EVER admitted making a mistake?
i think JPM needs to bring his diapers and bottles next time he races,
he is such a cry baby! its racing! no ones fault! get over it! GO SMOKE! put him
in the wall next time!
You know…I am just sick of this “put him in the wall” crap. What kind of human being would say something like that? Not a smart one that is for sure! How would you feel if he was killed? Or would you even care LeeAnn? I guarrantee you one thing…Tony is alot smarter than that…you would think his fans would be too! Grow up!
well darlin, if you know anything about racing terminology,
putting someone in that wall means taking someone out,
not killing the guy….Tony was the better man by not putting him
in the wall, or should I say, taking him out. and you know what,
right about now, JPM deserves what he gets.
and not being killed. so dont think that!
#1-I am not your darlin and #2-I DO know my terminology. My father,ex father-in-law, ex hubby and son have all been or are drivers. I also know what a small tap in to the wall can do to a person…i.e. Dale Earnhardt Sr. I am 100% sure that Sterling Marlin had no idea that a move so simple as tapping him into the wall would kill the man. I take offense to any human being who would want to send a driver into the wall on purpose to possibly lose their life. Especially since my family is full of drivers. Racing is racing and an unintentional hit is different, but a blatant “hit the wall asshole” is ridiculous and could cause alot of pain stress and yes death. And if you truly don’t think it could be crushing…ask Dale Jr.
u kno wat i hate. i hate people who think tyhey kno somthing and truthfully they dont. and the truth is, if that sr did that to smoke no one wood have questioned him. and if u want my opinion i think that smoke is jus as much of a pussy that j gordon is. hes just mad because he got tapped in the door and coodnt save it. im a spotter myself so all this fightin jus dopnt make sense. everybody thought montoya woodnt do shit, ride in the back all day an crash 20 laps in. well guess wat he didnt. he aint afraid to race.smoke is a pussy cuz he got his own medicine this time. thats how it goes in racing. get the fuck over it. u want somthin that u shood complain about?? how bout bring the better tracks back. get rid of most of the cookie cutter tracks. theyre boring. rockingham needs to come back. they shoodve left bristol alone. let darlington stay. and get rid of the cot. those are the things to complain about not whose fault it was that smoke spun out.
Montoya may be a champ all around the world but he stepped into a
stock car whatever happened to rubbins racin?!?!?!?!?!?
