It appears to be a two-man race for Ryan Newman’s soon-to-be-vacant seat at Penske Racing, with Casey Mears and David Stremme in the running.
Stremme is making a strong bid for the ride, doing yeoman work as Penske Racing’s test driver this season. In fact, Stremme’s name is being linked with as many as three different Cup openings next year.
Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway
- Stremme to replace Newman in the No 12 in 2009
- Stremme still trying to land Cup ride
- Stremme to Nationwide Series, Cup also?
- Tums scheme for Stremme at Michigan
- Stremme’s crew chief fined

Honestly? How is it even a contest? Stremme has been in crap equipment at CGR and maybe still has something to prove. Plus he’s been working as a test driver with Penske, so he’s familiar with their stuff and how they do things.
Mears can’t get it done with one of the top 3 teams in the garage. As Dennis Green once said, “Mears is who we thought he was!” I really don’t think Stremme is all that much better, but he should at least get a shot.
SWEET!!!!! BOTH GUYS SUCK!!
agreed.
yeah who really cares…stremme and mears both suck…and i dont think either of them can do anything at the cup level period…BUT i do agree with JEFF on this one…
we have only seen Stremme in chip ganassi equipment, and lets face it, we all know how bad their stuff is….so maybe he is more deserving of another chance….but again i dont think hes going to do anything….Penske is not one of the better teams in the garage either, but they put forth more effort than CGFSR would ever dream of…so i guess we will just have to see
