Logano the front-runner to replace Tony Stewart at JGR

Joey Logano acknowledged on Wednesday that he is a candidate to replace Tony Stewart in the #20 Sprint Cup car at Joe Gibbs Racing next season. “It has been brought up a few times,” Logano said as he arrived at JGR for a morning workout. Logano wasn’t shocked to hear that Stewart will be released from his final year at JGR next season to pursue other opportunities.
Stewart was scheduled to tell his team on Wednesday that this will be his last season, then announce on Thursday in Chicago that he has bought into Haas CNC Racing and will drive for that team with another driver — Ryan Newman, according to sources, is all but a done deal — next year.
Stewart will unveil his new car with Office Depot as the primary sponsor at a news conference in Indianapolis in two weeks, sources said. Logano, 18, said he will focus the rest of this season on his Nationwide Series ride and hope to get into a few Cup races before the end of the year to prepare him for next season.
- Logano likely to run Cup races for Gibbs this year
- JGR to announce Logano replacing Stewart on Monday
- Logano will drive 5 Cup races for HOF this fall
- Newman not going to the No 20 car
- Logano impresses in Nationwide debut

What shocking news!!!!
yeah no joke…but hes not ready for CUP…those cars are completely different…..lets rush him into cup and screw him over so i can stop hearing about “sliced bread”
I wouldnt mind seeing Gibbs hire Reed Sorensen for the Home Depot 20 and bring the #20 Nationwide team up to Cup fulltime in 2010 with Lagano as driver. A 4th Cup team. They could run 7 Cup races in 09 together and try to win the Nationwide championship next year. That would give Lagano a year of experience in Nationwide and about 10 Cup races before he goes fulltime.
dont believe that report, people that are close to this are saying Joey will run a full Nationwide schedule in 2009 and that several select Cup dates are in the mix. JGR is not going to make any mistakes with him and rush him into the 20 car at the age of 18.

Well, Howie…I hope to god it’s true that they won’t rush Logano into cup. And im not saying this as a Montoya fan but I think that they should pursue Juan Pablo Montoya and let’s see how he does in top notch equipment! Keep Hamlin in FedEx car, Move Busch to the Home Depot Ride and Let Montoya have the 18 car. I know for a fact that people are going to think im nuts for this Idea but it just might work…..Howie what do you think? Who do you think will Gibbs try to get!?

I’ve heard that too Howie, but some of my sources tell me that they’re reconsidering and are thinking of giving him the ride…that they think he’ll be ready. We’ll see.

It would be great if things could happen that easy but in this business you just cant flip flop drivers and sponsors and numbers. their are contracts a mile long for these drivers, they have obligations for years and with Mars being Kyles sponsor and Juan losing Mars because of the buyout unfortunately Juan does not have Juicy Fruit anymore and Joe will not just hand the 20 and Home Depot over to just anyone. And no one knows what Home Depot is saying to Joe right now. They can actually tell him who they want to drive that 20 next year.
While I think that it’s too early for Joey I would rather see him than Juan in that car. I don’t think they should split Steve Addington and Kyle. They work together great. Zippy can handle Joey. I would rather see them get Martin Truex Jr.
