Kyle PettyIn what was billed as the first time a driver in a top-tier NASCAR race simultaneously served as a TV analyst on race coverage, TNT’s #45-Kyle Petty took viewers a little too close to the action in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350. After early glitches, TNT’s other announcers initially couldn’t get through to Petty and when they did he said they were breaking up on him…the multitasking seemed promising.

Said Petty, at the green flag, “Everybody is a passenger today.” Too true. Driver Matt Kenseth and Petty collided in the second lap in an accident that included driver #91-Marc Goossens. TNT analyst Wally Dallenbach speculated Petty “had no clue” Kenseth was nosing in on him. On a replay of the view out of Petty’s windshield, the driver-analyst seemed to confirm that: As Kenseth came into view, viewers heard a clear exclamation of surprise that seemed to come from Petty “What the f@$#%”

TNT’s Bill Weber immediately apologized “for that language,” and Petty, who stayed in the race and finished 39th, came back on-air to say that “was not the kind of excitement I wanted” and later apologized on-air for the accident. All 43 cars in NASCAR races are miked, TNT spokesman Jeff Pomeroy says, and the audio that pops up on-air can’t always be identified: “We can assume that audio came from one of the three cars in the accident. But we can’t be sure it was Kyle.”

I loved that! “What the f@$#%” haha. Good entertainment and a great look at what a driver is thinking… even if its nothing.

Foul language and racing go together. If it disturbs anyone
that much that that kind of language was used, turn the channel
and watch something else!!! I loved it, thought it was funny
and truly shows you what goes on out there on the track. I
listen to my scanner and the language is colorful and REAL!!!

I laughed when i heard that over the tv.

It was funny because it happened so early and just shows what can happen when you have a driver mic’d up. Anybody who has attended a race using a scanner knows that. And this happens anytime you watch an NBA game. A camera focuses in on a player just as they swear and it comes through loud and clear. It’s all a part of live TV.

For a moment I had a flashback when Kyle said that. Now some of you older fans may remember this, it was Nov 1992 and it was Richard’s last race. The network was constantly checking his scanner well Richard was caught up in an accident and as he was coming to a stop in the grass he was yelling on the radio ” get a F–inf fire extinguisher and put the F–ing fire out. Pretty funny stuff coming from the King. Anyway it was a nice reminder that those guys are just as human as you and I. Now that’s reality TV!

if you guys think back to the start of the race ,they cut in on kyles radio while he was in prayer with the good lord ,remember…a good hearted christian slips up every now and then….we love you kyle

hah ya i was laughin my ass off. n anybody that has heard a kyle petty interview knows it was him how can they say there not sure its him. it was pretty clear

The slip was fine and all, but what I find a little hard to swallow is the fact that news-people are now the source of news. If Kyle wants to be an analyst, then so be it. What’s next? Rusty Wallace driving an IRL race just so he can cover it. Then, how about Jack Arute (however you spell his name) covering a Formula One race again. That would be entertaining wouldn’t it? Announcers are just that and should not be the news, they should report it.
