Kurt Busch was just 0.001 seconds faster than Jimmie Johnson, but it was enough to capture the pole for Sunday evening’s Sharp Aquos 500 Nextel Cup race at the California Speedway. The No.2 Miller Lite Dodge driver circled the two-mile oval in 39.474 seconds (182.399 m.p.h.).
The pole victory was Busch’s first of the season and 10th of his “Cup” career.
“We didn’t expect that good of a lap,” said Busch. “We got some of the cloud cover right when it first came in, you could almost feel it cool down.”
Starting alongside Busch will be Johnson who came up just short with a time of 39.475 seconds.
Kasey Kahne (39.556) and Ryan Newman (39.688) will make up row two.

Out here in the Wild West, we don’t allow southerners to qualify in the top 5.
It was sooooooooo painful to see that .001 and leave Kurt “Pee Wee”
Busch on the pole. Sitting in 110 degree weather…watching the
thunderstorm approaching… cant’ get any better.
Thought Jimmie would take it since he hit 184 in practice.
Pat Tryson and Kurt are hitting high gear just in time for the chase.
wheres jp montoya on the list?
Good question RG..
Did Montoya somehow not make the show? haha
Thats not the right order.. It says scott riggs is 33rd and i heard on the tv that riggs didn’t make the show.
Kurt is on a streak.
JPM blow his car up comming too green flag well he didn’t even get too green flag yet but yeah anyways.
pat and kurt peaking at the right time. hope JIMMIE JOHNSON WINS SUNDAY AND SATURDAY
Looks like several southeners in the tp 10!
Scott Riggs was faster then 10 cars with times and 11 cars including JPM…..yet he is going home. He was a half a second faster the Klye Petty who is starting the race.
Disgraceful! I really wish Nascar would change the rules so there are only a handful of provisionals and the rest (35-40 spots) qualify on time.
The crowd cheered louder than when Jr appears when JPM blew up!
I am getting tired of the Busch brothers. I was hoping that Jr. stayed on the pole.No such luck.
