Doug Thompson, a journalist for Capitolhillblue.com (a political news website), weighs in on his disdain for NASCAR and his assertion that Dale Earnhardt, Jr is simply an over-hyped marketing tool, likening him to American Idol:

I grew up in the heart of NASCAR country. Legendary driver Curtis Turner was a native of my home county and as a young boy I followed the careers of drivers like Fireball Roberts, Fred Lorenzen, Lee Petty and Leroy Yarborough.
NASCAR drivers, mostly moonshine runners in the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, drove for glory, not money.
In recent years, however, NASCAR - like too many other sports - has turned into a commercialized money machine: more hype than substance, more glitz than sport and more manufactured drama than actual competition.
Some say the old NASCAR died with Dale Earnhardt, who lost his life at Daytona in 2001 but the sport was already on life support when Earnhardt crashed on the last lap of that race.
In a final twist of fate, it is Earnhardt’s son, Dale Jr., who today symbolizes what is wrong with stock car racing.
For the past week, Earnhardt Jr. has been the center of a media feeding frenzy over his decision to leave the company his father founded and drive for another car owner next season. He’s leaving because his stepmother, who helped her late husband build the company into a racing powerhouse, won’t turn over 51 percent of the business to a youngster with no experience running anything but his mouth.
From all the hype, you’d think the Pope had renounced Catholicism and decided to become a Muslim. For 72 hours, news coverage about Earnhardt’s decision surpassed coverage of Britney’s shaved nether regions, David Hasselhoff’s drunken eating habits, Alec Baldwin’s angry voice mails and, oh yes, that little war in Iraq.
The story even knocked Roger Clemen’s move back to the Yankees off the lead-in to ESPN’s nightly newscasts.
And, sadly, like most celebrity stories, the furor over Earnhardt Jr. is about as important as who might or might not win American Idol.
If Dale Jr.’s name were anything but Earnhardt, we wouldn’t give a damn who he is or what he drives. In reality, baby Dale is not that good of a driver. He’s a journeyman wheel man with a so-so team whose career is possible by accident of birth and a lot of successful marketing.
NASCAR needs Dale Earnhardt Jr. because he is a last, desperate connection to a dead legend, a reminder of the days before stock car racing became television’s replacement for “professional” wrestling.
And Earnhardt Jr. allowed his handlers to turn him into a marketing bonanza. Forget the fact that he hasn’t won a race in over a year. Forget his erratic driving, frequent on-track mistakes and lackluster career behind the wheel. He’s Dale Earnhardt’s son, looks good on camera, and serves as a natural sacrificial lamb to the commercialism gods of NASCAR.
Earnhardt Jr. embodies the new image of NASCAR - prepackaged, over marketed and over-hyped. He’s scripted pabulum and a perfect symbol for a celebrity-driven culture with little use for substance.
Americans may be dying in Iraq at alarming rates, the White House may be overrun with scandal and Congress may be robbing the country blind but none of this matters because American Idol is down to the final three, the final Survivor is about to be voted off the island and Dale Jr. is throwing a temper tantrum because mommy won’t let him run his daddy’s company into the ground.

Sorry! I get very heated when it comes to the Jr. nation! It’s just really funny how people try to make him out to be something he will never be. He started His racing career with a silverspoon in his mouth. Jr. wouldn’t even be racing if it wasn’t for his daddy. But the funny thing is. Sr. always said Jr’s sister drives better than Jr. ever could. That came from Sr.s mouth himself. But there wasn’t a place in Nascar for a woman, thats why She isn’t racing.
I really don’t think it’s JRs fault that he is so popular. Before SR died it wasn’t JR who.. it was “little e” he was already popular. that I don’t know what he is going through. I run tow auto related businesses and have been trying
to break into the motorsport big leagues for a while, hustling by butt off and spending every
available penny. And who cares that what the “real racers” did for money? Moonshining is illegal?
Who cares? Because something is illegal does not mean its wrong, period. Everyone complaining needs
to realize that nascar is not what it was, does not care about tradition, and hopefully will fall
like the market crash of ‘29. You want real racin without all the winers. Watch the east series,
pro cup, and local stuff. Thats real racing, and that’s where nascar used to be.
You know stop and thik about it. Its no different than NFL and NBA and all the trades and stuff they do. If you have an established last name in any sport the press follows you with both good and bad. They talk about your father, brother, sister etc and if you deserve the same recognition. Its the way the press makes there money and the more we buy into it the more money they make.
JR. is a good driver. He has been giving a bad deal lately and has decided to do something to make his career better. If you were in his shoes and didn’t get teh equipment you needed to get close to a win I bet you would do the same thing. If you played football and you didnt get the equipment you needed, you would become a free agent as soon as you could. Jr. is doing what he feels is best for him and for that I give him credit
Um. So I was just reading through the comments. Only popular because
of his dad’s death? You make it sound like he’s played off that or
something. Here’s a hint: He hasn’t, not intentionally. Jr’s always
had the attitude of “I’m proud of my daddy, but I wanna be my own
person”. I always compare him to Hank Williams, Jr. in that way.
It’s not his fault his dad is who he was, and yet everybody’s so
quick to point out that he didn’t work for anything he got. Well,
actually, he did. Successful late model driver, 2 time Busch series
champion [[BEFORE his dad's death, because apparently you've forgotten
those]], won in only his 13th start. Also won the Pepsi 400 and a
few years later followed it up with the Daytona 500, among many
other worthwhile wins. Oh and here’s one other thing there bud;;
you’re such a Gordon fan. If there’s one driver you hear about more
than Dale Jr, it’s Gordon. And atleast Jr’s news stories aren’t
who he’s put into the wall most recently. Oh, and did you know your
precious Gordon treats people like crap? My dad n I are friends with
some of the track paramedics at Watkins, and he throws a hissy fit
at them and is completely diva-fied. So he’s not even a good person

you dont get nearly 20 cup wins by being a journeyman, you dont understand the undertaking it takes to make a race, get your car setup right, and adjust the car during a race just to get a top 10 much less a win… i know your passionate about your drivers, but seeing as what dale jr has had to endure between breaking out from his dads shadow, to his dad dying, his sister having a health scare from stress during the middle of negotiations and the season, family problems with tony jr in 05, dealing with teresa, and being the busiest man in motorsports, its a surprise he has been as consistent as he has been, humpy wheeler said just last week on 99.9 in knoxville here that if dale sr was still alive and running dei with the equipment that they had when he was alive and keeping it on that top level, that dale jr would have 40 wins and 2 championships already, now humpy has been around longer than anyone in the sport…enough said…

Naturally they took to Jr. We can’t change whats going on in Iraq, and Jr should surpass little miss spears anyday in the news. Leaving DEI is a big deal because DEI will be lost with out him. I t will be fun to watch them fall off the leader board. Do you really think she has the ability to make all the decisions on her own? She will probably hire someone to make the wrong choices for her anyway. And maybe the reason Jr isn’t number one or two right now IS because of all this bull crap that has been going on in DEI. Maybe now he can settle down somewhere and start getting some more wins. Don’t question his ability to win, we have seen it consitantly on certain tracks. I will stand up for you Nascar4life. If Jr. did not have the Earnhardt name he would be selling hot dogs in the stands at the races. He has minor talent. What upsets me so much about all of this, is the fact of how he actually feels about this whole thing. Jr did
not wakeup one day and say “hey, I hope one day everyone will like me only for my dad”. My question to everyone is,
If you are close to your dad, how would this make you feel. You watch your dad die right in front of you, only to
lose the only thing left of his as well. Jr is the most popular driver in this sport because he has class and respect
for this sport and more than anything, for his fans. So with that nascar24 guy, when was the last time Gordon actually
did something big for his fans. I dont ever recall him ever hanging out with them at a track just to say hey. Or crusing
early in the morning way before a race to eat breakfast with someone. I think the last time I heard about him signing
autographs was the year TMS opened in 97. Jr cares about us as people and as fans and knows that he would not be there
without us. His father taught him that and what we mean to him. So on the off season or an off week, please let me
know where I can find footage of Gordon just showing up at someone house on a Sunday for the heck of it.

JR is over-rated on his best day on the track. Nascar is it for thsi ‘racer’. I am sure he learned his lesson ‘trying’ to race a corvette at Ifinion. Got a little hot under the collar.

My daughter has been a fan of NASCAR for over 4 years ( since she was 12 ! ). I have never been a fan, but I am slowly becomming one ( to her delight! ). I see what goes on during the races, and I have yet to see Dale Earnhardt show the true talent that so many other racers have ( such as Stewart, Hamlin, Kenseth, I won’t mention the most popular ones because I am trying to make a point here ). These are drivers who race because they truly love what they are doing and they are trying to be good examples to the younger set coming up to take their places soon enough. This is what an “OUTSIDER” sees from the real world. I do not wear orange or yellow or red everywhere I go. I wonder what would happen if Sr. was here to see this mess. He would have a FIT, I am sure. He did not race all those years and show the world what RACING is REALLY all about to have his family bickering over the Almighty Dollar !!! THAT’s WHAT I SEE. Bottom line here… Lots of immaturity and greed on the ENTIRE FAMILY’S PART !!!!

First Id like to say I am NOT a Jr fan nor will i be. with that being said this article was total bs. Jr with help from his dad landed Bud whe Sr realized the potental in Steve Park, Jr was suppose to get the Pennzoil # 1 ride. However in landing Bud,Jr became the driver of choice of tons of Bud drinkers. Bud has found Jr sells beer bottom line! So not only are car owners trying to get a driver fans like , but one that has a LOYAL sponser and that = $$$$$. Which we all know $$$$$ = speed if used right. Teresa doesnt realise this to its fullest,I dont believe and in turn by letting Jr leave instead of doing the right thing and letting a fellow racer or ex-racer help she turns to Sony? Which is where she failed If I where Jr I woulda jumped that sinking ship long ago so he sould be commended for sticking with the lame duck as long as he did out of respect fo.r Sr. Michael seen the falling of Dei and jumped, many say hes nothing without Dei. Give JR the equipment that he should have and He could BLOW away everyone. He is a talented Driver. He is popular because of the Driver he is and the fact that he DONESN’T Whine when everything goes wrong. He is the first Driver to admit when he was a fault for an accident or for anything else. I cant say that about any other driver in Nascar. If he messes up in the pits he tells his crew that he is sorry and they will get it done better next time. Jr is doing a good thing by getting away from DEI and getting the equipment he needs to win championships. He then could meet and bet Gordon or any other driver out there!
Not any driver can get in a car after recieving 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his neck from a car accident. Not anybody can have a torn off fender at Martinsville and a messed up rear and still come back to finish in the top five.

Anyone that knows anything about racing knows that JR. is a good driver, which is one reason most of the top teams would luv to have him and Ginn will kill to get him. He is a sponsers dream and if he is given the right equipment he will contend for a championship. We will never have another Dale Sr., I am one of his biggest fans and Jr is not his dad. Gordon is a great driver, but he is also not Dale Sr., and he never will be. Gordon himself has said the same thing, and by the way. Gordon has had a few bad years as well. Jr. has matured over the last few years and he wants to win and most people think he will.

Jr. is overrated. He doesnt ever do crap in a race, but run in the back. I see no reason for him to leave his step-moms company. He is just bein a little whiney kid about it. “It is my dads company! I should have it!” WAH get over it. And yes his little situation is being over played. Who cares if he is moving. No one made a big deal about Mark Martin moving. No one made a big deal about Jeff Burton moving and aswell with Micheal Waltrip. So what is the hype about Jr.? Because all his father fans went to him as a favorite driver and he is leaving his fathers team? So what get over it. And Nascar fan Jeff Gordon is a whiney bitch ass driver. And Ford sucks? Oh yeah totaly. Then why is Rousch Racing so good? Their Ford aint they? There just arnt as many big name racing teams with Fords thats why they seem like they suck.
So, I think that all of you need to calm down. If you are more interested in the war in iraq at the current moment u are watching tv good for you go watch that, if you happen to want to enjoy your life and keep up on what you enjoy then why are you going to say things about people who enjoy dale jr and nascar over politics. They make all different kinds of shows because everyone has a different preference on what they prefer to watch. Not everyone has to spend all their time caring about iraq. Im not saying that Iraq is not important but im saying that not every single minute has to be focused on iraq maybe people use nascar to get their minds off what is happening in iraq maybe they have family there and are trying to get thier minds off it. This guy must be one of them ones that needs a raise, so he writes a subject that he knows nothing about, just seen it on TV. He knows that every one will have an opion about it, and will read it. This way he can go to his boss and say “Hey look at how many people read my colum, can I have a raise”, and the boss will give it to him and say keep up the good work.
