Jimmie Johnson will qualify in a backup car for Saturday’s Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway after hitting the Turn 1 wall on the third lap of Friday’s morning practice session.

“We worked hard over the night to make some gains and we ran two of the fastest laps, those two laps, and unfortunately I crashed,” the two-time defending Cup champion said. “But we’re very optimistic about the gains we’ve made and I’m still trying to understand why we lost it.”

Johnson had the second-fastest lap of the session at 175.509 mph when he hit the wall.

“I lost it early on the straightaway before the corner, so something happened up on the straightaway,” Johnson said.
