Jimmie JohnsonReigning Cup champion describes crash, fire at Indianapolis on XM Satellite Radio program “Jimmie Johnson: Not What You Expected:” Jimmie Johnson - “I see a little fire….I’m like, ‘O.K….I’m not hurt,’ and I see a swirl of flames come over by me and I’m like, ‘Wow…I’ve never seen that before.’

“And then the second time it came over it came right on top of my helmet and I didn’t realize my visor was up from the impact and the heat and the flame came right inside my helmet.

“… I’m like, ‘Oh man, this is bad,’ so I flipped the visor down and I’m still against the wall and I’m thinking about turning my belts loose and I could hear cars whizzing by and I’m like, ‘No…Bad idea.’ “

That HAD To suck… That was a hard lick, and the fire was pretty bad. On top of that it was in traffic and you’re trying to get to the bottom of the track to get out of the car before you roast! As much as I don’t care for him, I sure am glad he’s OK!

This wreck and fire happened right in front of our seats…I was pointing
at his car as it was driving into the wall and yelling at my mom “he’s going
to hit the wall!” and then the fire broke out…then I got scared…and
kept yelling GET OUT OF THE CAR PLEASE GOD LET HIM GET OUT OF THE CAR!!! and
even though I’m not a Jimmie Johnson fan…I was so happy to see him get
out of the car. I would never want anything to happen to any of the drivers.
    I thank God he’s okay.

Wow, I just watched the replay of that. I am so glad that he is okay, that looked pretty scary. May not like him, but I don’t wish that kind of stuff on anyone.

i was sitting here at home on my bed when it happened.
and i got so scared i had too leave the room for a minute
so i went out too the living room and my mom had the race on
and i saw him get out the car then i went outside for a few
minutes cause i really didn’t wanna see the replay of it
IM GLAD HE OK AND DIDN’T GET HURT JIMMIE LUCK WILL TURN AROUND SOON WE NEED CHAD BACK AND HE COMES BACK IN 2 WEEKS

Yeah that could have turned out alot worse. I am glad to know he had enough thinking power to not unbuckle too early even in that case. Those firesuits do their jobs long enough to give you enough time to get out of traffic and out of the car, but the belts can’t do theirs if you unbuckle them.

The best part of a wreck or fire with a race car is watching the driver get out of the car alive and functioning. Those first responders do a great job too and are sometimes overlooked.
