Jeff GordonAs beer cans bounced around his car, Jeff Gordon crossed the finish line Sunday for win No. 77 — breaking a tie with the late Dale Earnhardt on NASCAR’s career victory list.

It was only fitting that it happened at Talladega Superspeedway, where Earnhardt — who would have been 56 on Sunday — won 10 times in his Cup career.

But it was anticlimactic and confusing, ending under caution to leave Gordon unsure if he’d actually won and taken over sixth place on the wins list.

“Is it over?” he radioed his crew. “Is it over? Is it official?”

Nobody knew after two separate accidents on the first lap of a three-lap shootout to the finish froze the field and had NASCAR scrambling to make sense of the finish.

Gordon, who was 14th on a restart with 10 laps to go, stormed to the lead a second before NASCAR called a caution after David Reutimann’s engine failed and dumped oil all over the track.

It set up a three-lap sprint to the finish, but NASCAR makes only one attempt to complete it. If caution comes out, the race instantly ends. So when Elliott Sadler bumped the back of Greg Biffle to trigger a wreck, the race was effectively over.

But Tony Stewart was knocked into the wall far ahead of that accident and went spinning down the track into the inside wall. He was fuming as the field passed by him under caution, angrily gesturing at Jamie McMurray.

The fans, meanwhile, figured out that Gordon, who tied Earnhardt last week in Phoenix, was the victor and reacted with the shower of beer cans.

WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go Jeff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew you’d take the flag and if it wasn’t you it would have been your teammate Johnson :) I know that Dale Sr. would have been very proud of you, heck I’m sure he was watching from above and rooting you on. Those last few laps had me up and out of my seat and everyone in my house danced and cheered as you took the flag. Congrats on your win!!

  2. 2 Melissa

LOL….you must be a Tony the tantrum fan

  3. 3 J

what an exciting race!!!!!!! i’m stoked

  4. 4 Fleet

Just wondering why nascar waited till gordan took the lead to finally throw the caution flag,,,hmmmmmm,,I wonder????????????? Wait,,thats right,,,once gordon got into the lead, the officials realized oil was being spilt on the track.Simply coincendence,,, WooooHOOOO,, congrats to gordon,,,another great victory

  5. 5 David Polenz#3

umm actually Davids car had been blowing a motor, and blowing smoke for several laps, soon as Gordon inched into the lead, just like when he did, he did to jr, right before he lost the lead, they threw the flag and gordon won. They staged that 3 lap shootout, by delaying the caution, no red flag. The rediculous wrecks at the end were rediculous, to me the worse finish ive ever seen, dissappointing, fans were throwing cans and toilet paper at nascar not only Jeff Gordon. Somehow the cautions always lay right for Gordon, and Hendrick motorsports, always right before there a lap down, or losing or right after they take the lead, they waited. And i dont know what melissa was talking bout, Nothing happened at the end, they took the green not even a quarter of a way round the track there was a wreck, how could you be standing. The cautions are getting dissappointing at least there was actual debris, for sure. Im not sayin that NASCAR for sure is giving Hendrick or anyone favoritism, but just sayin its very possible, i love our sport, i came home expected a race to the finish, i listened to it on the radio and hopped out during the last caution out of the truck and ran into the house from the road cause my dad had to pick someone up, and i got in, i didnt even see a green flag lap, they said they were good to go for green, and then right before they threw the green they said oh no, we need another lap, well that put have the guys dead on fuel, including Jamie Mac, he had almost no fuel taking the green, and ran out in second till the corner, thats why, johnson past him. NASCAR fans are dissappointed with the worst finish probably most of them ever had seen. The part where the inside line formed was exciting, but that was 4 laps or so, and soon as Gordon made the lead after David R. blew up, several laps before, they threw the caution for liquid. I dont know, we’ll see, there setting Hendrick again for a championship. And that extra few laps, already had jr on the edge, well they added another lap and he even said, well were screwed, were gonna run out now, the needles in the corner, and hes been a contender all year, but just happens cautions and luck lay bad for him and DEI everytime hes up front. he would probably be 5th in points with out all the bad luck cautions, last week he was a contender for a top 5 or a win, but somehow the caution came out soon as Gordon came in, and just happens four other guys were in too, but they went a lap down, and he gained the lead? still trying to figure that one out, its possible for him to take the lead like that, but its not if the guy right behind him was put a lap down.

I’m sorry…I changed my mind and deleted an above comment that was one word…and that was a swear word.

The vast majority of you that come on our site are great….you post great debates, thoughts, arguments…you get the idea. YOU people are what make this site great.

But there’s a few that come on here apparently just to test our patience. Well, you’ve succeeded.

  7. 7 Melissa

I really am getting sick of hearing how NASCAR is favoring Hendrick and Gordon and Johnson. Face the facts people, Gordon won the race fair and square, deal with it.

  8. 8 JOM

Just when you think Tony Stewart might be ‘getting it’, he flys off the handle. What a freak! He bascially blamed McMurray for what happened and it wasn’t even his fault.

The guy needs some more anger management.

  9. 9 Fleet

Nope,,,all wrong,,,,if you would have watched tonys post race interview,,he was angry with the 38 car.

  10. 10 JOM

I gotta agree with you Melissa. Gordon will go down as one of the greatest ever. He is such a talent and Dale Earnhardt really liked Jeff so I don’t get the vitrol so many Earnhardt fans seem to have towards him.

They simply need to grow up and deal with it. Even more importantly, embrace it because it’s not everyday you get to see greatness in the making, which is exactly what this is.

  11. 11 Melissa

Exactly and for no good reason, any moron who isn’t blind could see that when stewart when in front of the 38 car 38 had no where to go. what should he have done? slammed on his brakes so as not to offend me tantrum? far as I’m concerned he has no business being in racing as he can’t handle it.

  12. 12 JOM

Fleet, you might be right. I know that he said something about Gilliland but didn’t he implicate McMurray as well. I was fairly sure he did but I could be wrong.

  13. 13 TT

    Administrator,

i just want to say thanks for a great site! i agree with you 100 % .don’t sweat the losers who have no manners and dont care!

  14. 14 Sean

This race was a load of manuer. I could have called that Jeffe Gordon Would win the race he needed to ON DALE SR’s birthday to pass him. Who could have scripted that any better? And hmm everyone is running out of gas but the Hendrick cars so lets wait a few more laps right? Sounds like a good idea to me…. Its getting disgusting and then to say THEY ARRESTED PEOPLE!!!!! That is out of control. What is the charge assault witha bear can on a car? PLEASE……

  15. 15 Melissa

well the people in the stands were warned before the race started that if they pulled that stunt they would be arrested, they got exactly what they deserved.

  16. 16 Amanda

I agree sean..this ‘Hendricks Motorsports Cup Series’ is getting out of hand. Just so happens that things turn out giddy and dandy for hendricks, right? Give me a friggin break. I wish an official would investigate hendricks and find out wtf is up. This is seriously getting rediculous.
The fans that threw the beer cans..they were being arrested for showing their anger? I don’t get that. it’s bull.

The race today was almost as much as a BS race that the daytona 500 was. I’m siding big time with tony’s comments. I believe this is staged. And notice they were SHOWING the debris on the track when the caution came out for it? Exactly. And hm, what happened to all of the cautions like at the past races this season..? NASCAR’s antics were finally figured out and they are only calling legit debris cautions now.
I really believe that hendricks motorsports is paying people to crash at a certain time in a certain place.

  17. 17 Bob

Grow up Sean. Someone call Mulder and Scully…there’s an X-Files conspiracy in NASCAR!!! Maybe the “Smoking Man” is behind it. Maybe it’s the aliens… People get a grip!

First, Fleet, Jeff Gordon is spelled GordON, not GordAN…would give you the benefit of a missed keystroke, but the a and the o aren’t anywhere close on the keyboard.

Second, there were only 8 cautions in this race, and I believe only 2 were for debris, which was plainly show on the tv (of course that’s part of the conspiracy - controlling the video shown!) I mean the first caution didnt come until lap 74, when Debris in Turn 1. Tony Stewart is the benefit of the free pass and will be back on the lead lap. (Is Tony now part of the conspiracy?? Maybe brainwashed while in the NASCAR trailer??)

Third, it’s called “PIT STRATEGY”, those people running out of gas on the late laps, could have pitted earlier, they didn’t! But of course, who cares for the safety of crews cleaning up the wreakage.

I’m sorry David#3, I think the only car getting things thrown at it was the 24 of Jeff Gordon, so your theory that “fans were throwing cans and toilet paper at nascar not only Jeff Gordon” is totally full of “manuer”, as Sean would say, oh by the way Sean…it’s MANURE.

I have to agree with Melissa..”I really am getting sick of hearing how NASCAR is favoring Hendrick and Gordon and Johnson. Face the facts people, Gordon won the race fair and square, deal with it.” OH, but you can’t forgot! Have to have someone to blame when your driver loses!

Finally, as for you Sean, they should have been arrested, you do that at a MLB or NFL game, you’re going to jail. It’s even on the tickets. These yahoos that decided to throw beer cans at Gordon were even WARNED before the race! Serves them right!

  18. 18 Melissa

get out the chest high waders as it’s getting deep in here

who in their right flippin’ mind would purposely crash a car that takes millions of dollars to build? not only is that ridiculous but it’s absolutely insane!!!!

Everything would be perfectly fine if Tony the tantrum had won the race.

oh and as for the so called fans being arrested for throwing beer cans onto the track…. here’s an idea…IT’S A SAFETY ISSUE….BUUUUUUUUUH

  19. 19 Bob

OMG, Amanda….how old are you? 12? Who is going to wreck a car on purpose? Now, you haters are completely out of control! Geez! I just don’t know what else to say. I mean you people are really out there with some of this stuff!

  20. 20 Melissa

Wow, I am in complete awe of you Bob, you nailed it on the head every step of the way. I am left completely speechless…..

  21. 21 Breanna Crooker

I agree, the people who can the cars are a disgrace. Quite frankly,
I’m not even in the mood to argue today. This is just a sad, sad
day to me. Whether I like Jeff or not [[which I most certainly don't,
but that's besides the point]], I just didn’t ever wanna see anybody
pass Dale for wins ever again man. Specially not at one of his best
tracks, let alone on his birthday. I do have my opinions on the race
today, but for once I’m keeping em to myself. I will say one thing,
however: Yes, Tony singled out the wrong driver at first. But he
admitted his mistake on international television. Atleast give him
    a little credit.

  22. 22 Melissa

Wow Bob, it’s almost as if your in my head, lol. I mean we aren’t talking match box cars here, we are talking about cars that are estimated to cost 2 million and up to build. If I were a driver I wouldn’t wreck it for anyone or any amount of money.

  23. 23 Serg

It’s crazy to read that NASCAR is scripted.

  24. 24 Lost

It was just another sheer dumb luck win for him today.. End of the race sucked big time i wanted to see some real racing! Then Last few laps are always the best.. Did not get that action..

  25. 25 Anonymous

I’m too P.O’d to even discuss how this is a whole bowl of wrong. You mean to tell me that after Gordon passes McMurray, THE CAUTION FLAG COMES OUT? Mind you, the caution flag SHOULD have been waved as soon as the caution happened, not wait for Gordon to get the lead lap. I smell B.S.!

Now, if folks don’t think NASCAR is scripted…………

  26. 26 Justin

I am a very avid Junior fan and can’t stand Gordon but at the same time im not gonna sit her and bash him even though he did get lucky on this win. But as a junior fan i was pissed off to see other juniors fans or senior fans throwing beer cans at gordon’s car. can any one say ignorance or white trash come on show some class. yeah i understand the rivalry between gordon and senior or gordon and junior. off the track gordon and senior were good friends and amazing business partners. if it wasnt junior that tied the record or beat it im sure gordon would have been high up on seniors list.

  27. 27 kelly

It was a good race Gordon worked for the win Stewart I hate to say has gotten out of hand with his comments gesture and all around bad mouth and attitude He is beginning to make a mockery of Nascar. As far as the fans throwing things is totally wrong they are poor sports and should be band from races DaleSr would be dissappointed Gordon is a great driver there is no conspiracies no favoritism I love Nascar but alot of people have made it hard to enjoy it with the talk of all the nonsence

  28. 28 Melissa

I know there wouldn’t be this much BS going on about the race if another driver had won today. It’s all because Gordon won. Jr. is an excellent driver, much like his father in many ways and I applaud him for what he said at the end of the race. He wasn’t pissed because Gordon one, like everyone else is. He stated that he had problems with his car all day.

  29. 29 Didi

Alrighty then. I’m catching a headache over all the conspiracy theories and the whole ” OMG” moments.

First of all, throwing beer on a track is dangerous. But, the fans are entitled to show their joy or/and disgust.

Everyone has their view on this whole Caution lap thing, so I’m giving mine. I think that it was a total crock, and Yes, this IS the Hendrick Cup. I don’t care what anyone says, there’s something wrong with this picture. I can see things working out in a racer’s favor. But EVERY WEEK? It if isn’t Johnson, it’s Gordon. Hendrick’s Dynamic Duo strikes again.

For the Record: No, NASCAR isn’t scripted, but it seems that they do have their favorites.

I can’t give anymore of an insight than this because I have to watch the race over again (Thank you, TiVO) I fell asleep on the Hendrick Cheerleaders on Fox. Sadly, I caught the last 30 laps and from the looks of it, that was when all the S… hit the fan.

  30. 30 Didi

    I forgot my beer-throwing thought ( Sorry)

It is dangerous, and God forbid is someone gets killed or seriously injured behind this. Throw bears, tissue, or flip the finger and boo your rears off, but throwing beer? And good beer at that? I don’t care how much I despise a driver, I’ll be dammed if I toss a Heineken onto the track!

    Okay, I’m done:)

  31. 31 J

Amanda, they were purposley showing on camera the debris and the announcers were showing footage of how the debris got there for the most part the entire race because of the speculation caused by waht Tony said (before he took it back that is), not in spite of it. How are you going to rip NASCAR for doing what you are demanding to see proof of?

  32. 32 Fleet

Lets bring up the past for a minute,,,,Did anyone find it odd how jimmy just happened to win the race right after the hendrick plane crashed.. I do hate Jeff GORDON, but I must say he is a great driver,, but that doesnt stop hendrick from being nascars favorite team. Also to BOB, is was not about the debris cautions this race,,,it was how the officials waited to drop the caution flag till jeff GORDON got in the lead. To melissa,,,NO there would not be this much BS if another driver had one, because no other driver is hated by people as much as GORDON is.

  33. 33 Melissa

I find it really childish and immature that fans have to stoop down to Tony the tantrums level. NASCAR does not rig races, Hendrick Motor’s DOES NOT pay drivers to crash cars at certain points in the race, and oh boo friggin’ hoo tony the tantrum didn’t win again. It seems to me that he and alot of others have alot of growing up to do. When Gordon or Johnson wins the race it’s all fixed, that’s BS. It would seem that no one stops to think that maybe the reason they are winning so many races is because they have dynamite crews behind them. As for the so called fans throwing stuff onto the track, not only is it wrong but it is highly dangerous. No one stops to think that if the car hits the beer can in just the right way it can shoot off the track and hit an innocent bystander who is there simply to root for their favorite driver. Or it could go through the window and injure the driver… is that what the sport has come to now? Trying to injure someone because your favorite driver didn’t win the race? Grow up folks, if ya can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen!!

  34. 34 J

I was also thinking earlier today that, for all the people who believe Hendricks to be favored or stealing poles or winning championships because they “pay off” NASCAR, they should think about the New York Yankees

The Yankees get the biggest budget of any US baseball team, yet most of the Yankee haters are mad because MONEY DOESNT EQUAL PERFORMANCE. Look at the incredible teamwork performed today by both Jeff and Jimmie, and also by Kenseth and Biffle! It takes incredible honorability to push and plan and stay in contact via headset with your team members and incredible skill to win any NASCAR race, especially at Talladega. If you watch the race you can’t deny any of these top racing performers their skills!! You can’t bash Gordon as a racer because winning this race meant superceding legends and winning more plain and simple. Calling the last caution when they did today was risky for everybody on the track in terms of fuel and placing this morning, but did you see all the debris on the track? That would have been much more dangerous! If NASCAR is handing Hendricks the monopoly, there sure are a lot of drivers including rookies willing to crash, not qualify, and stay behind despite their namesake all for Hendricks! Unfeesable conspiracy theory, but entertaining! hehe

  35. 35 Fleet

Its all in good fun,,,everybody has their favorite driver and will always find a way to say that they were right and all other drivers are wrong. Im die hard tony fan,,but I know that gordon and jimmy and really really great drivers, im mean gordon hasnt won four titles by accident. Anyway I thought todays race was great,,,could have done without the beer throwing,,,WHY would you waste good beer????

    Go Big Orange

  36. 36 Melissa

Very well said J. I also happen to notice that no one has yet to mention at one point in the race the top six racers including the lead car were all rookies!!!! Now I ask, did NASCAR pay them off too? Dale jr fans are booing Gordons win when Jr himself was happy for him. I also notice that stewart fans are still complaining about stuff. Makes one wonder if they caught his little gesture stunt at the end of the race? Oh wait, that’s right…that was just him playing around. Me personally, I hope NASCAR views the tapes, sees it and fines him again. He keeps going down the path he’s chosen and he will get suspended from racing for the rest of the season. Then we all better watch ourselves as his fans will be throwing alot worse then beer cans and toilet paper onto the track.

  37. 37 J

I could use a beer right now! Wonder how much beer could have been salvaged from all the mess on the track? LOL :)

  38. 38 Fleet

I know it,,,if you just have to be dumb, throw coke,,,SAVE THE BEER,,,lol

  39. 39 kelly

    Melissa you are exactly right

  40. 40 Melissa

I really wish we could go back to the way things used to be…. you rooted for your favorite driver and if he won great, if he lost well then better luck at the next track. Now it comes down to mud slinging, flying fists and fans throwing stuff onto the track. I really miss the old NASCAR.

  41. 41 kelly

Melissa i couldnt have said it better

  42. 42 kelly

lol Melissa you are right he is very immature He has gotten out of hand again they didnt fine him enough

  43. 43 Breanna Crooker

I am so SICK of hearing about how everyone is only throwing a
bitchfit because they don’t like Gordon, like Tony, like Jr, don’t
like Hendricks as a whole, whatever. Y’know what? I’m a Jr fan, and
I still get mad when he turns somebody around. I’m a Tony fan,
but I admit he’s too rough sometimes. I don’t like Gordon, but
obviously he can drive;; you don’t win four championships accidentally.
So here I am, the unbiased balanced fan. And I’m saying this: Is
Nascar fixes it’s races? Who knows. Is Nascar not fixing it’s races?
WHO KNOWS. That’s the point. Nobody can know for sure, because
Nascar won’t prove it or disprove it. And it’s real hard to keep
that needle at center when the fact that they won’t disprove it,
which would be so simple to do, makes it tilt toward fixed. And yeah,
they were showing the debris today. But did you notice there were
less of the debris cautions to begin with. The fact that they got
so bothered by Tony’s statment speaks volumes, too. If it’s not true,
why tweak about it? However, this isn’t the first time a team has
just had a really really good season, and that may be what it is.
But it’s stupid to rule it out as a possibility when there’s no
solid proof either way. That’s where the true hardheadedness lies.

  44. 44 Lost

Honestly i think if i was there i would be more upset on how the race ended.. ok i was not there i watched it and i am still upset hours later and i don’t care that Gordon won!!! i wanted to see a race and well there was no real race at the end!!! if there would of been a race and if he still would of won that way i would of still been happy for him.. (not a Gordon fan myself don’t care for him at all personally, but he is a good driver) i would of throwen some thing too (not at a driver that is very wrong and very chilish) but out of all things BEER what a waste!!

  45. 45 BethStocker

    congrats Gordon!

  46. 46 Justin

I’m glad I didnt waste the $100. I got to sit at home and watch Jimmie Johnson crash half his team mates and Nascar hold a caution flag untill thier boy gets the lead. The same as the last dega race I went to. But , of course thats all legit. lmao!

  47. 47 Anonymous

Let’s see how many Gordon sheep cry this same exact tune when their golden boy gets wrecked, or lose a race. such y hypocrisy if you ask me.

  48. 48 adam

they could have redflagged the race. nascar did that during the busch race. if they would have red flagged it…there would have been 3 laps of racing instead of 2. nascar will get it right one day unfortunately all the fans will be gone by then.

  49. 49 aracerdude

Nascar fans one again showed the racing community why they are the laughing stock of the racing world.

The actions of the fans belting the track with debris at the end of the race is a good show of charcter of the average NECKCAR fan.

Please stay away from real racing…………

Is anyone complaining about the Roush (I mean Busch) racing series? When no one else has a shot there does everybody get up in arms? Does anyone pay attention to the fact that certain makes do better at certain tracks. does anyone notice that DEI and RCR have had a pretty good run at plate races? Why is no one putting forth a conspiracy theory concerning Toyota? I mean what right do they have to come in to the US of A with these cars made in the US of A aand race against our fine canadian and Mexican made cars. And what about Montoya? Like in “Days of Thunder” he has hit everyone but the pace car. Why no fines or suspensions for aggressive driving. Or is NASCAR simply trying to pad the bank account by promoting the Hispanic driver? No racing series should or would allow the tactics he has used to go unpunished.
