Jeff Gordon spun out Matt Kenseth with four laps to go, then held on to win Sunday’s Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway. Fans showered the track with debris after the race, an apparent protest of Gordon’s racing tactics. “I hate to win one like that,” Gordon said in Victory Lane. “Matt, he ran a great race.”

Gordon and Kenseth tangled earlier this year during a race at Bristol Motor Speedway, causing Gordon to shove Kenseth in a physical confrontation afterward. Gordon denied that Sunday’s finish had anything to do with Bristol. Gordon said he didn’t want to wreck Kenseth, insisting, “I wanted to race him.” But he added Kenseth was trying to block him. “I’m not going to back down,” Gordon said. “I wanted to win.”

Kenseth crew chief Robbie Reiser said in a television interview: “We just got spun out, I guess.” Second-place finisher Jeff Burton, a former teammate of Kenseth’s at Roush Racing, initially declined comment because he didn’t see what happened. But after wincing during a television replay, Burton said, “Matt’s a hard-nosed racer, and there’ll be retribution for that, I’m sure.” Burton said if NASCAR isn’t willing to issue rough driving penalties, it will be up to drivers to settle issues on the track. “If NASCAR doesn’t handle it, then we need to handle it,” Burton said. “And that’s OK.”

Kenseth and David Stremme then crashed on the way to the start/finish line, sending Kenseth spinning again at the finish. Kenseth dominated the second half of Sunday’s race and appeared to be headed to his third victory of the season, but a sudden surge from Gordon in the closing laps allowed him to catch Kenseth in Turn 2. Gordon then appeared to tap Kenseth’s rear bumper with his front bumper. Earlier in the race, Gordon closed in on Kenseth’s rear bumper on a restart with 30 laps to go. But Gordon couldn’t pull off the pass and Kenseth got away. It was Gordon’s first victory at the suburban Chicago track, and his second victory of the 2006 season. Gordon won two weeks ago at Infineon Raceway.

Burton, trying for his first victory since 2001, finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The race was slowed eight times for caution flags, with no major crashes until the Gordon-Kenseth accident. Michael Waltrip’s car was damaged when he brushed the wall with 40 laps to go, and Casey Mears — who won his first NASCAR race on Saturday with a victory in the Busch Series — spun and hit the wall with 34 laps to go.

It’s nice that Jeff Gordon feels like he has to cheat to win a Nextel Cup race. The guy practially admitted that he shoved Kenseth out the the way to win the race.

Sorry, what little respect I had left for Gordon is gone.

I hope Kenseth puts that @#$# into fence soon!!!

  2. 2 Samantha

I agree with you completely. Jeff Gordon believes he has to cheat to win and that’s why fans throw beer cans and other stuff at him. He’s a good driver but sometimes his actions are questionable. Kenseth should have shoved him back since Gordon shoved him at Bristol but with today’s regulations, he would probably get fined big time and it’s not worth it. But boys will be boys.

  3. 3 Ruby

The actions of Jeff Gordon today perfectly typifies what Nascar has become. A burlesque show without the strippers! Of course he “did in” Kenseth on purpose, despite what the paid for shill Benny Parsons says. But, that’s Ok…he’s JEFF GORDON!

Oh, hello Nascar, Jeff is currently on probation, and now this….you’ve got to punish him, right?? Hold your breath until they do and you’ll DIE!
That’s why any REAL racing fan won’t watch Nascar. Guess I’d better get real!

  4. 4 That One Racer Chick…

Yea…used to be a Gordon fan when I was like 8…Im soooo glad Im over that phase!!!! Gordon is an @ss and anyone who thinks they deserve to win like that is just stupid! Any smart racer knows…you dont take someone out just to win…if you dont have him…you back out and try again the next lap. Yea. Did NASCAR forget that he is on probation? I think it would be hilarious if they would take the win away from him…hum…maybe they should!?

  5. 5 Melissa

jeff was catchen up! he was rite there. 17 slowed down and blocked him and jeff checked him. its rite there in the replay! has nothen to do with bristol! jeffs car is and was faster. kennseth admitted it himself.

  6. 6 TT

Well, I gotta say yes to the above. Jeffy better watch his little hiney because I think your gonna see Matt spank it with his FORD!!!

  7. 7 GARRETT

JEFFS A LIL CRYING $%#@ THAT NEVER DOES ANYTHING WRONG IN HIS EYES AND HE IS A BAD DRIVER HE ALWAYS CRASHES PEOPLE AND WHEN HE GETS TAKIN OUT WITH THE CRASH HE STARTED IT WAS SOMONE ELSES FAULT IT ALWAYS IS HE NEVER ADMITS TO HIS MISTAKES AND I HAVE ALWAYS HATED GORDON AND ALWAYS WILL

  8. 8 Davey Dave

Melissa, you’re obviously a Gordon fan because your explanation is hilarious!

Jeff ‘checked him’?? No, he SPUN him out! Kenseth admitted he was slower, yes but that doesn’t make it ok for Gordon to take him out, does it??

  9. 9 Becca

I’m sorry. I was not a Jeff Gordon fan to begin with. But hitting another driver to win a race is just wrong! If you can not win a race without hitting another driver you really need to get off the track. I hope Nascar does something about this! Because it has been non-stop with these two since Bristol. This just gives me more of a reason not to like Jeff Gordon.

  10. 10 Melissa

Oh, please, people! Everyone has their favorite drivers and everyone cries when they get “wronged.” Fact is, Kenseth slowed and got himself into trouble. Gordon was catching him and would’ve passed him before the end, anyway - probably when Kenseth RAN OUT OF GAS! Gordon said it all when he said he could’ve spun him out several times earlier when Kenseth blocked him on restarts. Go Jeff go!

  11. 11 cory

ya jeff gordon is a no good racer that needs to learn how to race like when he wrecked matt and matt went to appologize and gordo KEPT HIS HELMET ON and pushed him what a b$#$@ he is a such a F_____! and needs to learn how to race without cheation if u watch that race he tpook the high side every time then when theres 3 l;aps to go he takes it low and spins him out i dunnoi he aint gonna admit to it cuz hes like thta but neways F___ gordon! ya and bein on probation shit he shoulda been black flaged right on the spot

  12. 12 Michell

I agree with Melissa. All you cry babies upset because Jeff won, need to watch the slow motion replay. Matt himself though blaming Jeff did say that he slowed up and that there was a lap car there. Jeff couldn’t go around. It was not in retaliation for Bristol. Matt said himself he slowed up and then he ends up running out of gas after the spin so he knew he was running out of gas and slowed and Jeff had no where to go. He hit him because he was right up behind him and couldn’t get out of the way because of the lap car. If everyone sits down and reviews the tape they will see it was not on purpose. I watch this race with several people, some of whom were Kenseth fans and even they said it was a racing hit after watching the replay and all the race commentators said Jeff’s hit wasn’t intential. Grow up. Matt’s still 2nd in points. No harm done.

  13. 13 Merenda

oh give me a break Melissa. So Grodon KNEW that Matt was running outta gas so he just helped him out right? uh no. Matt wasn’t out of gas until two laps into the caution. Which by then the race woulda been over since it had been less then 4 to go. AND Jeff could have won IF Matt HAD ran out UNDER THE GREEN. But Once again the D*&ead decided HE was gonna do his trademark driving. Keep backing up your shrimp boy, melissa. yawn

The fact is, Matt had the line, Gordo wanted it and INSTEAD of driving CLEAN AROUND Matt he decided to turn him!

Make NO MISTAKE it was on purpose. And ofr the announcers to act like were all blind and stupid is crazy. Not to mention disrespectful to us since WE pay their salaries.

BTW… did everyone there forget that maybe 10 mins before that they were showing Helton in the drivers meeting about all tghe cheating and behavior and NO TOLERENCE!!! Uh YA So where were you NASACR to back up those statements???

  14. 14 Tyler

It’s funny that Jeff Gordon says he knows that Kenseth didn’t wreck him on purpose at Bristol, if Gordon knew that then why did he push him, just the way Gordon is I guess, but he practically admitted he spun him out. And of course nothing happens to him, becuase guess why, he’s JEFF GORDON. He’s just like a little 8-year-old brat, whines and complains when something doesn’t happen their way.

  15. 15 Alex

I guess you just decided to watch once the races went to TNT but at the Bristol race earlier this year Kenseth spun Gordon (who had an easy Top 5) just because someone bumped him and he lost the lead. “Rubbins’ racing” and I wish Dale Earnhardt was still here. He was was race car driver. If every driver just backed off because they were afraid to bump somebody then there might as well be robots in the car. Racing ain’t just driving around the track following the leader, it’s doing anything in your power to beat everybody else as long as your not going demolition derby. Which means finding a better line, diving your nose to beat someone else into a corner, maybe giving a bump. Finally, for you that say Jeff Gordon is a bad driver, you might want to look at his stats. He has the most championships and wins among active drivers so he is probably doing something right. Ford boys, im sorry your programs suck but you shouldnt bash Chevy boys just because we’e the Champs.

  16. 16 Melissa

Yet again - watch the replay. You tell me what you would do going 170+ mph and the guy two inches in front of you slows considerably in a nanosecond. Let me guess - YOUR driver would take a few seconds, think about the “clean” thing to do and somehow miraculously pass with his halo still intact. You crack me up! How about you give me a break! This is why I love being a Gordon (or Grodan as you put it) fan. I get to support a great driver and listen to whiny losers like you when Gordon beats their drivers. I feel like I should be paying big money for this entertainment!!!

  17. 17 Melissa

    Amen, Alex!

  18. 18 ian

jeff gordon is a little kid that thinks if one person gets in his way he has to shove them to get where he needs to go….as for matt…yes he woulda ran outta gas and yes jeff probably still wouldve one the race but still that doesnt make it right. Lets take a step back in time….to bristol….jeff gordon was upset with matt kenseth … but what was the deal with keeping his helmet on???….just a little kid…when we he learn to be a man

  19. 19 Jeb

The only post on here that got the point is Ruby at the top. NASCAR has become wrestling and I have no respect for the sport anymore.

  20. 20 Brett

well the race today WAS shocking that jeff spun out kenseth but its only racing. It is not as easy as it looks out there… about over half of you can say “sh*t that looks easy… i can drive circles” but think about reality here. they were about a couple inches from each other. there was a lap car. kenseth was conserving fuel. he didnt expect gordon at any point in time to take him around. but then jeff has to deal with kenseth slowing up. and he had nowhere to go with the lap car. i am not taking sides at all but i would just say it was an accident and move on.

  21. 21 Dan

lol….ok jeff did hit him because matt checked up on him to keep from spinning out. oh and gordon would have won anyway cause matt ran out of gas…did anyone forget about that part. so gordon did nothing wrong.

  22. 22 Jeff

Let’s see here… kenseth is slow and blocking gordon…theres a lap car above him… and matt checked up on him…i think we all can agree that if we were in his situation we would have bumped him not wreck him so we could get the win…its called the bump and run…the number one reason this is so big is because so many people are making a big deal about nothing… a racing incident…lets not forget bristol where kenseth did the same thing…except jeff didn’t go and cry like a little girl he got in kenseth’s face…so everyone needs to get over it and except it that jeff won…i guarentee that if jr. did something like that none of you guys would care as much…kenseth should have moved out of the way…everyone needs to stop boo who-ing about it and put themselves in his situation… so garret and davey dave, you guys need to consider other things before you become a baby and start pointing fingers at Gordon…you guys are jealous because your drivers can’t pull of a win like that and have 4 championships

  23. 23 Merenda

Lets not forget that track is PLENTY WIDE and jeff easily had room to go around. Lets also not forget that Jeff blocks just as much if not more then any other driver out there. lets not forget when Jeff whined about the track causing damage to his car s othe ystopped an entire race for HIM to make the so called repairs. Lets not forget, when Busch got hit by fat man, there WAS severe punishment. For Jeff, “aww dont do that again”.

Face it, Gordon is the golden boy for Nascar and they will always put him up there, bc it makes them money by having idiots (not naming names) follow him. For the record, I am not a Kenseth fan.

Like I said before, Matt could have and probably would have ran out of fuel before the end, so he blocked, everyone does to some extent, that there at that particular moment, he was NOT blocking, the 42 was well into the OUTSIDE line, which Jeff and Matt were on the very INSIDE line, if Jeff wanted around so bad, take the middle dumb ass. Oh wait, that would be too much work for him so lets just tear up a guys car not to mention endanger his life by turning him. He held a grudge since bristol, we all know it and he’s grinning like crazy right now bc, some moron’s kiss his a$$ and keep allowing this.

NASCAR definetely needs to get its act together and dish out the same punishment to ALL drivers.

  24. 24 Elizabeth

I think that if you can’t race clean there is a problem, when you ad in dirty tactics the racing becomes less of what racing is. I think that clean racing and respect is what you need on the track, you have your life and the lives of 42 other men plus crew members and track members in your own hands, you can’t take that lightly when you are going 200 MPH. people should try and show respect, but then i begin to think that that word is fading away with time, less people are showing and giving AND reciving the respect that they deserve.

  25. 25 Dan

    lol well said

  26. 26 cory

YA OK JEFF ABOUT WHEN KENSETH WREWCKED GORDON GORDON ALSO KEPT HIS HELMET ONB WHEN HE PUSHED HIM THATS IN MY CASE A PUSSY WHAT U THINK GUYS>

  27. 27 Tyler

Kenseth wasn’t conserving fuel, he said his car was bad at the end of a green flag run, Tony Stewart even thought he had enough fuel to make it, yet what happened to him, he ran out of gas. I really don’t care for Kenseth but that fact is he was spun out and there’s no way you can say different.

  28. 28 Alex

Cory, your an idoit…Gordon may have kept his helmet on, but Kenseth ran away…now tell me who is the pussy. Elizabeth…apparently you are one of the people I was talking about that just tuned in when the races went to TNT. Gordon “had no respect” for Kenseth because KENSETH SPUN HIM AT BRISTOL so don’t try to play the respect card here. And also, in my opinion and a lot of other peoples opinions, Kenseth spinning Gordon at Bristol was more dangerous than at Chicagoland. Think about it, the cars are spread out and the drivers have a chance to react at Chicagoland, at Bristol, there could have been a huge pile up, so don’t play the life and death card either.

  29. 29 Dan

To everyone that is saying that Gordon is a bad driver and all this crap. i would like to see you do what gordon and all of the other drivers do. you really dont have any right saying anything about what these drivers do until you actually get behind the wheel and do what they do every week.

  30. 30 Alexandria

ok yea i was reading what some of u said…….i absolutly hate jeff gordon!!…..i’ll admit that he is an ok driver but he’s a whiner and he does cheat (as in crashing people on purpose)…..i’m sorry but its the truth!…..he should learn to grow up!!…..i’ll admit that the crash might not have been intentional this time …. but he could have atleast made it look like he tried to avoid it….thats why it looks like he did it on purpose and i agree that NASCAR should do something ….and he’s on probation but no NASCAR loves their “golden boy” and if i were there i would have done the same thing by throughing the debre at him!!…..well lets put it this way…if he wins at louden this weekend (which my the way most New Englands absolutly HATE him!!!) then there will be alot of debre on the track…..and if he crashes (which i hope he does) then well just about everyone is gonna be cheering…..like last year……

  31. 31 Melissa

You Gordon haters are so funny! I would like to say thanks for the laughs. Who’s the whiner here? While Jeff is cashing his paycheck and hanging out with his supermodel fiance, he’s laughing at you - as am I!!! Just face it - if NASCAR races were all clean, no one would give a damn about the sport. It’s called racing - not kindergarten play time. And, may I just add this - I wish you guys would use spell check or at least ask your little children how to spell what it is you’re trying to say. Oh, and puncuation wouldn’t hurt, either. Go Gordon! Those of us with class love you!

  32. 32 David (D~Man)

I just love the fact that back in the day, Big Dale would hit little baby Jeff with the Chrome horn and make him check up. Little Jeffy and the rest of the Gay-Pride-Brigade(Well there colors do look like a gay-pride sticker) would compain about the hard driving. Now he does the same thing to a driven like Matt and everyone just says “Jeff must be right!. Jeff needs to either get put to the wall using his own tactics or needs to get his lights punched out by someone like Smoke. You can’t have things both ways, its one thing to make someone loose to get by them, but a blatant push is bad form, and yet when Matt tries to talk to him at Bristol Jeff starts a 2nd Grade shoving match.

It’s time for Jeff to stand up and be the man he says he is and own up to his bad tactics and be the man. The choice is just for him to keep lookin’ in that mirror, cause that 8 car shows he can drive with the same style and grace!

    Cheers to all……. 3/8 forever!

  33. 33 Melissa

It’s funny you can accept Sr’s driving tactics, but not Jeff’s. Hilarious! Are you upset that Jeff is going to pass Sr. in wins? Boo freaking hoo. And, since when did Sr. have grace? He was a damn good driver, but no one can say that he raced clean. If it was Sr. behind Kenseth yesterday, he would have spun him out three restarts before that! I wouldn’t expect anything less from him. He had guts and he did what it took to win. I can respect that in any driver. Too bad you can only respect that from one.

And let’s not get started on car designs. Oldest joke in the book. I hate to break it to you, but once again, Jeff laughs all the way to the bank in his rainbow colored car. He couldn’t care less if you laugh at it or not!

  34. 34 Brett

the thing about jeff’s shoving at bristol is that it was kenseths fault he came right over after the race and it was gordon’s fault for shoving him. I race Sprint cars and believe me. you do not go up to someone after they wreck out. That’s the same at chicago. This time, kenseth didn’t get into gordon’s face. He did whine a little though. I’m a Kasey Kahne fan so… Go Kasey!

  35. 35 GH

What’s happening in NASCAR is actually kind of similar to F1.

They may not have penalized Gordon for ‘moving’ Kenseth out of the way, but they’re also allowing blocking, which wasn’t the case 5 or 10 years ago. Back then, if you put your nose under somebody, they’d give you room. Now, they don’t. Plus, the tires and aero rules don’t allow for the same sort of side-by-side racing they used to have. So, unless you beat a guy through pit stops (sound familiar?) or push him out of the way, it’s a procession.

I’m certainly not a fan of “move”, but Kenseth was pretty stupid. They knew he was low on fuel and if he had taken it easy he’d probably have preserved a top 10 and not lost so many points. Kenseth is one of those guys that seems to be all nice and “aw shucks” Midwestern but he sure pisses a lot of guys off, doesn’t he?

Montoya obviously has talent, but he’ll be a complete disaster in NASCAR. Plus, Chip’s NASCAR team sucks. I see these guys talking about how it’s a move for NASCAR to go more international, but I just don’t buy it.

NASCAR will want Danica, and her “manager” will like the money, but that’s a long season driving a slug of a car.

The rumor is, again, the merger talks are cooling. No surprise, but the need is so blatantly obvious that I find it hard to believe even an idiot like TG can turn his nose up at the solution. Especially with the Allmendinger phenomenon, the Marco Madness and Sam Hornish, there are SO many reasons to just do it and sort out the pieces later. A revived open wheel series WILL see the Montoyas and Villeneuves and third generation youngsters. It could be a perfect time for this, because if people like us aren’t watching NASCAR races anymore, others aren’t either.

    Tick, tick, tick…

  36. 36 Melissa

GH - you know your stuff! How refreshing! I’m anxious to see what happens in the future with Danica. There is always room in every sport for change, although it is hard for some people to accept it. There’s no doubt she will bring lots of fans with her and no doubt that NASCAR will reap bountiful rewards from it, but let’s just hope she can race with the guys and not just be the pretty face of NASCAR.

  37. 37 jeff

hey david d-man… jeff might complain, but every driver does…as we all saw at bristol he gets in peoples faces… hes not like kenseth and runs away…here we go with the gay pride thing, jeff hated his own paint scheme he said it himself, everyone calls him gay cuz hes a nascar legend and hes not southern … I GUARANTEE THAT IF JR. WOULD HAVE DONE WUT JEFF DID YESTERDAY THIS WHOLE SITUATION WOULDN’T BE HALF AS BIG AS IT IS NOW…ITS ALL FAVORITISM

  38. 38 Justin

Gordon’s in the same boat as Stewart. They hate it when the bump and run and “slam” drafting happens to them, but they won’t falter to use those when it is to benifit themselves. Jeff’s pissing a lot of people off, he’s going to be a marked man come the Chase.

Also, it’s one thing to catch a car, it’s another thing to pass him. Jeff may have had the faster car, as Kenseth suggested. And yes, you got to do what you have to do, whether it’s blocking or giving them a little tap to loosen them up. But you just don’t go all out and take them out of competition completely, as Jeff did.

    Rubbin’s racin, I suppose.

  39. 39 Tyler

One thing I didn’t notice people talking about, is what Stremme did to Kenseth at the end of the race, WOW. Stremme must have really wanted that 21st spot to run Kenseth all the way down the track. Another thing is, what if Kenseth would have came back up the race track after he was spun out, Gordon would have had nowhere to go.

BTW, has anyone heard about Robert Yates not having a team next year?

  40. 40 Alex

How I forgot to mention this I don’t know but those that actually seen the race could not possibly say Gordon hit Kenseth on purpose. Hell, he barely tapped him at all. Kenseth slowed down in the corner, Gordon couldn’t check up so he held his line. Kenseth was starting to spin just from getting loose and that slowed him down enough that Jeff tapped him then. Hell the first couple of replays the TNT guys didnt even think Gordon touched Kenseth. Oh, and D-Man, 1st, your names gay, D-Man??? 2cd, hows that gay pride paint scheme looking now that we see who Kenseths wife is and who Gordon’s engaged to? I’d say Gordon wins another.
