Jarrett Bolts to Toyota…But Will He Still Drive the Truck??
Quote selected text Published May 14th, 2006 in NASCAR NewsDale Jarrett has signed with Michael Waltrip Racing for 2007-08 and will drive a Toyota for the final two seasons of his career.
The 1999 champion said management opportunities were the deciding factor in severing a 12-season relationship with Robert Yates Racing and Ford at the end of the season. Waltrip and Toyota have offered Jarrett several options when he steps out of the cockpit.
Waltrip didn’t name a sponsor for Jarrett’s team but said he has enough sponsorship for two Cup teams and would add a third if he signed another company. UPS, Jarrett’s sponsor since 2001, hasn’t decided whether to stay with Yates after this year.
DOUG YATES, Co-Owner - Robert Yates Racing…
“Obviously we’re in the last year of our contract together and he came to us and said that he had an offer. We told him that we were willing to counter that offer, so we matched it to show him that we were committed to keeping him here until his retirement. He said he would think about it and told us that he really wanted to stay here and really loved our race team and what we’ve built together. A little time later, though, he came back and said they made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse.
…So Toyota gave him a boatload of money. At Jarrett’s age, kudos to him!
Rumors abound that he will bring UPS with him. If not, can we get Jackie Stewart to drive the truck?
