D. K. Wilson of The Chicago Sports Review takes square aim at NASCAR & Sports Network ESPN, calling them racially insensitive and sickening in their attitudes towards blacks. Do you agree? Does he have a point? Or is it reverse racism? Read the article excerpt below…
———————————————————————————————-
After watching the talk on televised media, reading reactions around the country, reading comments here and elsewhere, I’m going to throw down the gauntlet.
A warning to black athletes, coaches, GMs, and anyone else affiliated with sports who is black: WATCH YOUR BACK! “They” are after YOU!
Who is “they”?
“They” are sports writers, radio and television talking heads both black and white, the league commissioners, Senators, Congress people, the people who work in the White House and anyone else on those levels you can think of that I forgot.
None of these people give a damn about you. They only care to cover their backs, progress their agendas, and ensure that the peoples of this country are as divided as possible.
How do I know this?
I know this because last night ESPN aired a program titled “NASCAR Explosion.” This program painted a wholly positive picture about NASCAR, from its roots to its present. It took the drivers with the least talent in auto racing - that’s right the least; Formula One drivers are the best, Indy open wheel drivers 2nd, then NASCAR drivers - and glorified them to the point where Robert Lipsyte, I believe, called the drivers of today “real super athletes” - and likened them and their look to “astronauts!”
In an unbelievable display of racial insensitivity, the program likened these people, these “Scot-Irish” people as down to earth, hard-working, family-oriented, morally responsible people. These redneck, racist, string ‘em up, tar and feather, shoot, beat to death, hang pregnant women and slice their stomachs so the unborn baby falls on the ground-ass people were glorified! Glorified, damn it!
These people and this sport were called truly and uniquely American. That ESPN would promote this way too predominantly “white only” sport as such is sickening. Sure, a large part of their motives revolve around the fact that their first televised NASCAR race of the season is this weekend. But you cannot tell me that this program was not offensive to every black writer at ESPN, ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine.

“It took the drivers with the least talent in auto racing - that’s right the least; Formula One drivers are the best, Indy open wheel drivers 2nd, then NASCAR drivers ..”
They are being pretty generous towards stock car drivers. It MUST be they only looked at 3 different divisions.
Turn left, now turn left, now turn left again……….etc.
“do you want me to shift?”
Nope, turn left and run into the guy ahead of you…….
I didn’t see the program.. but from what I’m reading?..
I can’t see where this guy is going with it..
What was rascist about it?. And is he calling everyone a redneck?
I don’t know this article confused me. I honestly can’t
tell what he’s talking about. Maybe I had to watch
the program.
Is Nascar racially insesitive….only as much as the KKK is.
Anyone who would call an entire group of people racist just because
of the sport they follow is just as ignorant as the fans who actually
are racist.
What a douchebag.
I’m sure the racist people who follow the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, NLL,
MLS, PBR, WWE, and X-Games are feeling left out by this article.
Bottom line is, there’s a__holes in every bunch. Don’t target Nascar
for it because it makes you look plain stupid.
All 19 year olds THINK they have all the answers….and then they turn 25 and realize they didn’t. It’s nothing new and has been going on for hundreds of years….I know, you ARE the exemption…..not. Funny how young people use terms like ’stupid’, and ‘intelligent’ so easily…..funny sh_t. These are the same ones who have all the answers….yawn.
Want to watch a good movie about a black Nascar driver…watch ‘Greased Lightning’ with Richard Prior. It is a true story about Charlie Scott. He actually won a Nascar event in the 50’s……pretty cool.
Wendell Scott is the first, and I believe only, African American driver
to win a Nascar race and that was in 1964.
What on earth does age have to do with having enough common sense to
not be racist, or with saying people who are are among the most ignorant
people in the world? And I don’t pretend to have all the answers; rather
I believe human beings as a whole know absolutely nothing, even that
what we perceive as reality exists because I’m a believer of quantum
physics.
You are correct about Wendell Scott, I stand correted, his official Nascar win came in Dec. 1963. He won a Nascar Richmond track championship in the late 50’s.
here is the link:

You know what is funny about all of this is that most Nascar Fans watch other sports. I do not know a single nascar fan who is a racist, but I can name half a dozen football and basketball fans who are. This writer is ignorant about the sport.
Well this article was a complete waste of a few minutes of my life would you like everyone to bring up things that happend in the past? Ok so a bunch of moonshiners started racing and it turned out to be a sport you may think that Nascar is rasist but thinking that everyone who watches Nascar is rasist your a complete idiot. If you’ve notice black people havent really been successful in any motorsport not trying to be rasist but as a whole, is there any in Indy Car Series? What about F-1? Ok so obviously Nascar wouldnt be the only rasist sport. Its stupid to say that Nascar is a bunch of rednecks if you dont like the sport dont watch it and if you think that every nascar fan is rasist go to Hel* because not everyone is rasist.
I have a couple of undergraduate degrees, but no actual graduate degree, so I must be one of those stupid hillbilly rednecks. To prove my ignorant, racist beliefs, I must admit I thought automobile racing was about driving fast, passing cars, and winning races. I really am an idiot. By the way, what are those other things I watch on SpeedTV? Is the Rolex Series, ARCA/REMAX, or anything on dirt considered racing if it is not F1, NASCAR, or those “Indy open wheel” things?
OH MY GOD!!!! I whatched the part of the damn thing last night and there wasn’t one racist remark on there. I think he is racist. Calling me a baby killer, redneck blah, blah blah!!! Just because I LOVE Nascar well he can kiss my you know what!!!! Formula one driver aren’t all that and they are a bunch of full of them self’s jerks from what I can see. Further more I would just love to see his idiot ass in a stock car!! Yeah right like that would happen! I can’t believe the crap come from this guys computer! He really need’s to get a clue!!!
And here I thought Annoyance was the only one who loved to stir
the s_ _ t pot.
D.K. Wilson I don’t know if you are Black,Brown,White or Pink and I really could care less because all your doing is trying to grab some head lines for your sagging career, saying “they are after you” meaning ??NASCAR/ESPN Etc.. Etc.. just to piss off or inflame a race is just plane stupid and by the way you are not even close to giving a original point of view. This old line has been going around for sooo many years . Maby if you had 1/2 the talent you think you do you would have come up with something original to amuse us with…
If D.K. Wilson thinks its so easy then why isn’t he out there proving to the world that anyone can do it? Where did he come to this magical conclusion? Oh wait he is good enough but they wont let him because he is black. What a waste of space this guy is. If something doesn’t go your way its racism.
what is that idiot talking about? u want racist, go to a local dirt track in the midwest-south and watch the sanctioning bodies vehicles run confederate flags (although this has nothing to do with racism). what an idiot. i think we should take all our college degrees an string this guy up in someones front yard with em. see what he thinks then… dumb ass
this dr wilson sounds like a black racist to me, if the blacks want to drive a race car they can they will not be given any special treatment like they have been for the pass 40 years are so, they have balck althelics that could sponsorthem so wants the problem, there setting on there black asses and waiting on some white person to do everything for them, get on your ass and drive
I do think its funny that the first black guy to run cup series in some odd years was Bill Lester, what I find ironic is that he was driving teh ” Waste Management” car. LOL I bet DK Wilso nwould say his agent was racist. moron.
Wow, the last three comments, minus the middle one, are being made by
someone almost as ignorant as the one who wrote the article. Racial
slurs shouldn’t be levied against anyone, regardless of what social
status they have. And not all poor people that are a “minority race”
are abusive, etc, and to think so is extremely racist. And some of them
aren’t there for lack of effort, nor are the white people who live in
the same “ghettos”. Some are, but a few bad apples shouldn’t spoil
the bunch.
As to the second comment, you can’t compare stock car racing and sports
car racing, because they are completely different; you have to have
a higher level of skills for different things for each series. They
are not wimps, they are racecar drivers just like Nascar guys, and
to say they’re homo is a reputation created by the fact that they
come from different cultures where the general public isn’t so
homophoebic that two guys can’t hug each other without being called
queers. It’s the same as this guy saying Nascar is racist just because
it started in the Southeast.
[Boy, I'm shocked I've had to say this here!!] Comments that are racist (meaning racial slurs) in this thread are going to be deleted and the ones who persist will be banned. And just because you’re anonymous doesn’t mean we can’t ban you, just so you know.
No duh Mr. Editor….just so you know and you do, much more then one person is anonymous………yo.
I believe it’d go by IP address.
Kudos, Editor.
I believe the NBA is racists for not making every team have 2 Mexicans and an Oriental person on the team , whether they are good enough or not…lol…that makes about as much sense as forcing people in other sports to go out of the way to make sure thier teams look like Jessee Jackson picked them out.
Sounds like someone is a paranoid racist himself. Get a brain buddy. Lumping a group of people as large as the fans of nascar in one big lump and calling them racist is a pretty racist statement to me. Open your idiot eyes and mind and educate yourself on a fantastic sport!
omg, this is the most ridiculous article i ever read.. who the hell do u think you are saying
stuff like that..
A letter emailed to the editor:
I can’t even believe you posted this disgusting article by some idiot who obviously knows NOTHING about NASCAR! (Your racially insesitive article)
You guys oughta be shot just for putting it on here. I heard about this article via IP…this is the last time I’ll be on your site. Boo to you!
Name Withheld
P.S. Oh, and I LOVED the comment posted by anonymous…I think I’d wanna remain anonymous also, if I made a stupid remark like that!
Get a grip and get a life!
Hi ___,
We’re sorry you feel that way but we’re all entitled to our opinions and what we want and don’t want to read and we’re so sorry to see you go.
If you must know our stance on this, we think the writer is ridiculous in his assertions. That is exactly why we posted the portion of the article in the first place. I’m sorry that was not self evident given the writers prejudical claims.
As for us being shot, again, you are entitled to your opinion as this is a free country. But if you must shoot someone I would be much more concerned about the person, journalist, racially insensitive muckraker (or whatever label you want to insert there) that would NOT post this article.
Thanks for reading!
I love it.
I am shocked!!
To the editor and Author:
I have a really hard time believing that you just asked these people to sensor their comments when they are clearly defending themselves against your writer. I can’t believe how twisted this guy is to make a generalization that makes the millions of NASCAR fans:
“These redneck, racist, string ‘em up, tar and feather, shoot, beat to death, hang pregnant women and slice their stomachs so the unborn baby falls on the ground-ass people”
I believe in freedom of speech, and also that it is every person’s right to have an opinion. What I can’t believe is that this person is permitted to write these fire starting, offensive comments that breed racism and indifference rather than pointing out the positive things that the sport is doing to diversify itself. It would just take a small amount of research to find out that NASCAR has quite a few programs already set up for this purpose. Also, have you ever been to a race? Do you know how expensive it is? How could anyone go and see the races, if the fans are what you say. You also might like to take a walk through the garages, watch some of the shows, get to know some of the minority fans and see that this sport is more diversified than you think. I watch and enjoy all motor sports and actually think that NASCAR is the most diverse of all of them, and if you open your eyes you would see that. Stop breeding ignorance, and if you are going to attack millions of people than at least educate yourself and know what you are talking about first. Shame on you and Shame on this site for supporting this negativity.
If F1 and IRL and CART are so great (and non-racist), why can’t they get 150,000
to 200,000 people in the stands for every race? The last time I checked, F1 isn’t
coming back to the US next year and IRL and CART are suffering to the point that they
considered joining back together! In fact the tracks that IRL/CART and NASCAR share,
NASCAR sells out every seat and the others are giving tickets away just to fill the
start/finish grand stands (the INDY 500 being the ONLY exception). Besides if having
views that are 180 degrees opposite of the liberal, left wing (Rosie O’donnell)
media bias means that I am a “redneck”, then count me in! I will put my faith into
the “redneck” NASCAR following because I know that when my freedoms as an American
are being threatened, that same “redneck” NASCAR following will be willing to sacrifice
to protect those freedoms so that the other side can continue ranting and raving about
things they know NOTHING about because we live in a FREE society!!!!
By the way, when was the last time that a NASCAR athelete was arrested for murder,
assault, battery, rape, dog fighting, or a gun violation?
Right on, editor!!
How about being arrested for herion?
Ohhhh Knock it off Anonymous!! So what if that truck driver got busted for heroin. If drugs were an issue than we wouldn’t have any sports. Heroin is no worse than steriods, all of it damages the integrity of the sport. If you are going to post this ignorant stuff than at least have the jewels to put a name on it.
Got your jewels hangin’ princess.
Simple minds…simple solutions.
So what? How about a big so what Mr. American. What a great role model he makes for the younger race fans.
” Don’t worry son, it’s only herion.” BULLSH_T!
If you honestly feel that is a so what, you need therepy. It’s called having morals and setting a good example.
To the editor and Author:
I have a really hard time believing that you just asked these people to sensor their comments when they are clearly defending themselves against your writer. I can’t believe how twisted this guy is to make a generalization that makes the millions of NASCAR fans:
If you bothered to look, the censoring was done eliminate excessive swearing and attacks on OTHERS on this board, not the author of the article.
“These redneck, racist, string ‘em up, tar and feather, shoot, beat to death, hang pregnant women and slice their stomachs so the unborn baby falls on the ground-ass people”
Yes, those comments are terrible, in my opinion. I assume by you reprinting this part you’re insinuating that I condone this statement. I most certainly do not, and furthermore, people need to be aware of such prejudicial editorial which is why it’s on our site.
I believe in freedom of speech, and also that it is every person’s right to have an opinion. What I can’t believe is that this person is permitted to write these fire starting, offensive comments that breed racism and indifference rather than pointing out the positive things that the sport is doing to diversify itself.
Again, that is EXACTLY why I reprinted this article. See my previous answer above.
Also, have you ever been to a race?
Uh…yes. A few.
Stop breeding ignorance, and if you are going to attack millions of people than at least educate yourself and know what you are talking about first.
Sir or Madam, you might want to look in the mirror on that one.
I just sent a livid E-mail to all of the pages this guy writes for. Everyone that is outraged by this should do the same!
Good idea.
Oh shut up already. People get arrested in all sports, including
Nascar, for a variety of things. This isn’t even attacking the
athletes as much as it is the fans and fans in all sports certainly
make asses of themselves. As was seen by the two deleted racist
posts on this story, there are indeed racist Nascar fans. The thing
is, however, and it’s the thing this ignorant fool of a “writer” doesn’t
seem to understand, is that there are racist fans of all sports. And
racist individuals in this country who don’t like sports. -Gasp.-
Targeting Nascar for it just because it started in the Southeastern
United States is stupid. Times have changed bubba and Nascar is no
longer contained to that part of the country, nor is everyone in
that part of the country, or the South in general for that matter,
racist. Catch up or shut up.
This guy is a idiot, what has he been smoking. He says he knows that every one is out to get black people couse he watched a show on ESPN about nascar. I saw that show and there was nothing, I repeat NOTHING raciest on it at all.
Sounds to me like the origional auther of this story is a raciest against white people and nascar fans of all races
Do ya’ll remember when Dateline planted some “Muslim” looking people at races and expected to get a negative reaction from the fans on hidden camera and nothing happened? The fans were actually polite to them. That just shows you what the majority of the media and news organizations do to get a story… They stage it or just come up with something out of their own imagination like the author of this article did.
I’d hate to really get started on the author of this story… D.K. Wilson. I looked up a lot of his articles and he is pushing a completely biased agenda in every single sports article I found. Isn’t it funny how quickly those who perceive themselves to be victims of oppression want to become oppressors themselves? Also, he goes from sport to sport writing articles bashing every single one just to stir up a fuss. It seems he enjoys nothing as much as kissing his own ass. When the media is used in such a way it makes me want to throw up.
D.K.Wilson is an ass. Plain and simple. He knows nothing about nothing. He obviously writes only to offend others, shame on him!
ya know…why is it only racist when it pertains to white people???
NOBODY complains about the NBA being racist cause its all black people
NOBODY complains because they’re are no WHITE running backs in the NFl…but god forbid there be only 2 black Qb’s in the league..something must be racist.
Racism only exists these days in a reverse fashion brought by those who are truely blind. People who cry racism make it racism. If we (the white people) wanted to whine cry n moan about racism, we would have an arguement much greater then your own. So SHUT UP, and be greatful, not hypocritical.
