In NASCAR, merger is another word for downsizing

Everybody has put a positive spin on NASCAR’s sudden merger fever because it’s been exciting to see things like Mark Martin joining the retooling effort at Dale Earnhardt Inc.
But, when the dust settles, this really is just a glorified downsizing.
Teresa Earnhardt and Max Siegel and Bobby Ginn talk about strengths in the future. But, the hard fact is two cars, the No 13 and No. 14, that weeks ago were qualifying for Nextel Cup races are parked. Dale Earnhardt Jr. pointed out his biggest concern the other day was wondering which of his friends at Ginn and DEI will lose their jobs as the shops combine to run four cars instead of a total of six.
More of this sort of thing appears to be on the horizon. The Robert Yates “merger” with Newman/Haas/Lanigan may only be part one of that deal. Another team like the Woods Brothers or Robbie Gordon or both may need to join to maximize the engineering potential from Newman/Haas with the sponsorship potential of a solid Nextel Cup team.
- Kalkhoven says Champ Car and IRL not ‘even remotely close to a merger’
- GEM wants to merge with Petty
- Will merger of Miller and Coors hurt Kurt Busch?
- Earnhardt Jr. excited for DEI-Ginn merger
- Pemberton says differences led to him leaving DEI

first of all id like to kno y a different name pops up wen i go to leave a comment on here. but anyway.. ginn really ______ his team over. an of course him an dei an martin are gonna be all positive about it. blah it sucks. puts so many people out of jobs. no one in the nascar community has really spoken out on tv about it for wat it is. y i dont know. somone needs to. all this ____ is like a govt coverup. if somone says somthin negative then they get shot kinda feel to it. ____ that nascar aint ____ to wat it was a couple years ago. i thought nascar was the only ____ up arouond now teams are startin to turn out to be the same way. next thing u kno nascar is gonna have a big spy scandal on its hands like f1 does. i dunno maybe then ratings will go up. but for now.. i hope no other teams ____ up like ginn did. its too many hard workin people back at the shops that dotn get the recognition they deserve to play stupid ___ business games wit peoples livelihoods.
Gettin tired of having to censor comments from frequent posters on here who KNOW not to swear. So don’t do it please!!!
You tell em Editor!
Its interesting how this doesnt include the Roush-Fenway merger
Perhaps because it contradicts what it is trying to point out?
Roush-Fenway isn’t a merger of race teams like the article is discussing. It’s a partnership of two completely different companies… One is a race team and the other is an ownership group with an owner (John Henry) that likes racing, but had no team. They’re talking more about race teams that come together to form a larger team that can compete with Hendrick, Roush, and Gibbs, but that happens at the expense of some cars (to stay under the 4 car limit) and people (don’t need the support staff for 6 cars if you’re only running 4).
I don’t see why people are surprised or wanting someone to speak out about these mergers. This is how modern business is run. It may be ugly and uncaring to some but it is completely logical. NASCAR is obviously built on and by big business nowadays.. This is just how its going to be. The race teams have picked up the “corporate” ways. I don’t see anyone really putting a positive spin on it though. Just making the best of the bad.
“In NASCAR, merger is another word for downsizing.” You’d think that an article written by a columnist in Detroit would know that Detroit is where “merger” and “downsizing” (which ARE one in the same) were invented. These so-called reporters who write stories like these completely baffle me.
