Officials from The Home Depot, which has sponsored Tony Stewart through all 10 years of his NASCAR Cup career, had only nice things to say in the wake of Stewart’s announcement Wednesday that he is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and The Home Depot isn’t coming with him.
Stewart, sources have said, will become co-owner of Haas CNC Racing, and Stewart is negotiating with Office Depot and Old Spice as sponsors for 2009.
Stewart has had tumultuous moments in his career, but The Home Depot stuck with him throughout.
“The Home Depot has had a remarkable relationship with Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing since our sponsorship commenced back in 1998,” said Frank Bifulco, chief marketing office for the home improvement chain. “With two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships and 32 race wins, Tony is a true competitor and an excellent ambassador for our company.”
Bifulco said in the statement that the company’s future plans “will be announced at a later date.” The Home Depot’s contract with JGR runs through next season.
- Stewart to run special paint scheme at Texas
- Nardelli out as boss at Home Depot
- Home Depot to launch 2007 NASCAR ad campaign starting at Daytona
- Subway to sponsor Tony Stewart’s No 20 in three races in 2008
- #20 Home Depot team not allowed to unload car, Stewart to NASCAR hauler?

Big mistake for Home Depot. The type of relationship they have with Tony is rare, and it has served both parties well. But the rumor has been that they were contemplating getting out of primary sponsorship anyway, so this just gives them the excuse to do itnow.

Translation: The Home Despot isn’t doing too hot right now and will not return in the same fashion next year. Maybe an associate or part-time sponsorship but they won’t leave Lowe’s with all that unchallenged fender/hood time.
Home Depot is with JGR through the Red Skins, that is the ONLY reason they are with JGR is because of that relationship.
and the fact that more than likely Joey will take the #20 doesn’t hurt I’m sure.

how did Depot and the redskins come together? This is the first i’ve heard of it
Home Depot has been a business partner/sponsor with the Redskins for a long time, and I hope you know what JGR has to do with the skins…. l0l

JGR has nothing to do with the skins now…he retired to spend more time with his sick grandson and focus more on family and the race team
Yes but the Snyder family and the Gibbs family are still very very good friends. Business related friendships don’t end just because you no longer work for that business (unless it was a nasty split)
Also Joe is still an employee of the Red Skins as an Special Advisor (whatever that position means)
