Hendrick drops plans to appeal Sonoma penalties

Car owner Rick Hendrick confirmed today that the sanctions levied by NASCAR on Tuesday against the #24 and #48 Nextel Cup Series teams will not be appealed by Hendrick Motorsports.
“The penalties are excessive,” Hendrick reiterated. “But we’re not going to put time and resources into issuing an appeal. Instead, we will direct that energy into our internal processes to make sure we have full confidence that our cars will meet standards when presented for inspection each week. We’ve said from the beginning that this would be a learning process (with the Car of Tomorrow) and there would be a lot of give and take between NASCAR and the teams to figure it out. That doesn’t seem to be the case now, and I don’t think it’s the right direction to go.”
#24 car chief Jeff Meendering and #48 car chief Ron Malec have been named interim crew chiefs for their respective teams beginning with Sunday’s Nextel Cup event at New Hampshire International Speedway.
“In Jeff and Ron, we have two guys who know their teams inside and out,” Hendrick said. “They both have been here a long time, they both know the pressures involved and they both have the full support of our entire organization. We don’t expect to miss a beat.”
Crew chiefs Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus will resume at-track duties for their respective teams at the Aug. 19 Nextel Cup Series event at Michigan International Speedway.

Just shut up Rick and take the punishment like a man.
What the hell do you think he is doing? He dropped the appeals, so why don’t you shut up?
touchy touchy JJ fan HAHAHA I love it. Rick was making it sound like war crimes they way he was crying about it earlier.
Well, when Junior got hit with penalties, it was a bunch of HMS fans laughing and telling DEI to take the punishment. Karma is bliss.
Rick did need to stop crying NASCAR told everybody before season started dont mess with the COT plain and simple.
Good move HMS why spend all them $$ to fight a loosing battle. NASCAR always wins. Just tell Jeffie & Jimmy now they have something they can really whine about…
I agree anonymous. Funny how quiet all the Hendricks fans are on this thread.
Although I am a Jr. fan (sigh).
He’s dropping the appeal.Therefore he’s taking the punishment.Jr.
also thought about appeal and then decided against it when he was being
punished.
I also find it funny how the hendrick fans are so quiet on this one. Like Lee said Nascar told all the teams that the COT is not to be messed with. They are finally showing consistency with penalties also. Nascar is finally starting to make the right decisions on penalties. Nascar is clearly sending the message of “you mess with the car, we mess with your points”. Great job Nascar!
yea im a Gordon fan and I could care less about the penalty
because even with the fine, he still leads by over 100pts.
So perhaps you should be more broad on your stereotypes hoppy
and anonymous.
I am a Gordon fan and I am fine with all of it, I thought Steve and Chad were wrong for doing it cause they didn’t need to.
I am glad they are treating everyone the same on this, except for the parking on Fri. I think that was wrong, but maybe they are going to increase it each time someone messes with the COT.
I am glad HMS is moving on and getting ready for the race this week, I am very confident it’s not going to hurt Jeff and he will still win during this 6 weeks. He still finished 7th at Sonoma and started from the back. I just think this is his year and you haters might as well just accept it.
The Hendrick fans are still here, James. We just don’t whine as much as everyone else!
you should never say “this is his year” thats just asking for bad news. The chase hasn’t even started. Remember in 05 when Johnson was well on track to win the championship then he had a huge long string of DNF’s and poor finishes? It ain’t over till its over.
Aside from the fact that karma is catching up with Hendrick, you have to wonder why they’re dropping the appeal. Same reason that Junior hinted at when DEI dropped its appeal?
You gotta wonder if NASCAR doesn’t coerce teams into things sometimes. I mean, obviously they do by making the COT a requirement to be able to race next season, but also when it comes to rule changes and penalties.
NASCAR does have an amazing way of making people see their point of view when behind closed doors. I can think of dozens and dozens of guys through out the years who completely change their tone after a “discussion” with the big wigs. But is it really coercion when they’re the supreme power and the rules are theirs to decide? I bet NASCAR would call it “educating”… haha.
I think nascar did the right thing.
Nascar said that no one should mess with the COT (and that means grey areas)… even though the grey areas separate the good teams from the rest of the teams.
I hope nascar allows more messing around with the COT after this season.

There should not be any “grey areas” they should throw out the book and write a new one and be done with this or if there are grey areas then they should be able to mess with them.
