Harvick, Montoya in shoving match at The Glen-UPDATED

ESPN.com is reporting that neither is expected to be fined. “I don’t think they were fighting,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition. “They were discussing things.” Said series director John Darby, “I thought it was cool as hell.”

Juan Pablo Montoya has done his share of beating and banging on the track during his rookie year in Nextel Cup racing, but on Sunday, he got his first taste of physical confrontation - NASCAR style.
Montoya was running sixth, trailing Kevin Harvick in fifth, on a restart on Lap 73 of Sunday’s Centurion Boats at The Glen, but neither Montoya nor Harvick made it through the first corner. Montoya went low into the turn to close the door on Martin Truex Jr., but Truex tapped the bumper of Montoya’s No. 42 Dodge and spun him.
Montoya’s car slid sideways into Harvick’s No. 29 Chevrolet, taking out both cars. Trying to find a hole in the melee, Jeff Burton was unable to avoid Montoya and caught a piece of the wreck.
Harvick and Montoya quickly climbed from their cars and engaged in a shoving match before NASCAR officials stepped between them.
“I just got run over,” Harvick said. “I guess the No. 1 [of Truex] ran over the 42. It’s one of those things where our Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet was really good there at the end, and it just felt like we’d saved our car enough to have a chance to win there, and it all goes up in smoke, because some people get impatient.
“But I just hate it. I’m frustrated with the No. 42. It just seems like he runs over somebody every week.”
Asked what he and Montoya were saying to each other, Harvick replied, “I was talking about kicking his ass, because that’s how I felt about it.”
Montoya, on the other hand, felt he was blameless in the incident.
“Our restarts were always slow,” Montoya said. “I went to the inside to defend the No. 1 car, and he spun me from behind. When he spun me, I got backward into the 29. [Harvick] got out of the car, came out disrespectful, saying all kinds of things, grabbed me - and I don’t appreciate that.

Martin Truex should go back to Busch, he is totally out classed but i would love to see someone kick JPM’s butt
Montoya blocked Truex, he had every right to hit montoya.
Montoya is a jerk,he wrecks at least one person every week.

Gordon got suspended last week for being an idiot, maybe Harvick should be suspended for being an idiot by getting out his car and confronting Montoya…totally immature and irresponsible, he should atleast get a fine.

I understand blocking is done all the time, and on the same token, so is knocking them
out of the way. JPM is an idiot!!

I like JPM, and I’m glad Harvick confronted him because he has been all over the place this year, but Kevin was in the wrong on this one. You can’t blame JPM for getting punted and taking Harvick and Burton with him. There’s a big difference between putting the chrome horn to someone and sliding them out of the groove and dumping them like Martin did. I can’t agree at all with whoever said Truex should go back to Busch. He’s certainly not a top-tier driver right now, but he’s running a heck of a lot better than Jr and he’s in the race for the Chase for now.
One good thing came of it though… Harvick had the quote of the year with that “I was talking about kicking his A$$”!
BTW… Hearing that there will be no fines for their confrontation after the wreck. Thank God!
I would have liked to see a Saturday night brawl between Harvick and Montoya. Harvick is always been a hot head and shouts a good game but I would put my $$ on Montoya in a real fight without helmets. Montoya has massive upper body strength, a great workout ethic, he boxes and swings a golf club every day possible. What does Harvick do??… Shout at you??

I was there it was awesome! JPM was blocking like crazy and Truex moved him, to bad it was into Harvick!
I was not a Montoya fan wen he was in F1, but since he has come to Nascar he has grown on me.
He did nothing wrong yesterday and for both Harvick and Burton to treat him like that was almost racist.
When I watched the Speed Report, they also portrayed this as being Montoya’s fault and also made it appear that
Montoya was starting with Harvick when it was Harvick who drove over to block Montoya in and then got out of his car
and then started threatening Montoya. Burton is just as guilty to being an idiot…from the looks of the replay…
Montoya didn’t let his car slide back down…it’s where he stopped after spinning! I guess according to them…

Harvick to spin in front of everyone? Yesterday was a huge joke and I truly think Harvick comes out of this in
a negative way. All the Nascar drivers need to realize that Montoya is not a rookie…he doesn’t care who he is racing

if he was sooo bad at his restarts, his quote, then why would you block that hard, he has never been considerate at the track at all and thats what started it. ok so its racing but like harvick said this isnt the first time he’s done it. his time will come. I just wished they didnt have helmets on, I hate that.
I think it was good old fashion racing and its about time, NASCAR is making this such a yuppy stuck up sport. So thank God for ppl like JPM and R. Gordon, to make this sport fun again!!!!!
JPM’s got a hard-on these days because he can slam into people at will and not have to worry about knocking the wheels off of his car. I’m all for him being in NASCAR, he just needs to chill out a little bit. I can’t wait till we get to Bristol and these guys knock him around for four hours.
i think harvick did the right thing. if i was him i kick his you know what that car could have win and with it only be 4 race away with the points what number 42 have to lose nothing when harvick got alot riding on the races. so i think people should look at that, there be more race to but the points is what really counts i am a harvick fan all the way too he could kick his you know what i pretty sure. thatnk you

TONY STEWART: Maybe next week after I’ve seen it. Only thing I heard is they still had their HANS and their helmets on so it doesn’t impress me. If they are going to do it, take their helmets off, and if not, don’t waste everybody’s time. I think we covered that years ago at Bristol.
Some of you people and your virgin ears… “Ass” isn’t the same as “s**t” in most people’s eyes. I’ve heard “ass” on Looney Tunes, but I don’t really see the problem with either them. Who is really gonna get hurt by a little cussing anyways? I don’t hear the kids complaing or anyone for that matter, except the sad people who just wanna see someone get in trouble for nothing because they don’t like them (or the people who can make money off of it).

I dig Montoya but he needs to settle down a bit. Where did he think he was really gonna go entering turn 1 like that? If he was in an F1 car I still can’t imagine there being a pretty out come. Regardless of Truex getting into him there is only so much space you have to work with in a pack of cars. Montoya was driving like he was the only one out there.
It was a good show (the shoving and grabbing helmets). Made me get out of my chair. Cool that no penalties were handed out for the shoving. As for Stewart’s comment, he’s just the same, all talk and no action. Like Ricky Rudd said about Harvick, “yap, yap, yap”. But it was fun to see.

Judging from some of the responses some of you might aswell just come out and say you dont like him because he’s not a yank. You’re all acting like it’s Montoya’s fault. Every angle proves it isn’t. Why is he allowed to talk and act in the way that gets other drivers fined and deducted points?

You guys defending Montoya really need to go back and watch it, he really is getting into it with a different driver every week, if nascar is going to punish anyone they need to go back and look at the past history of the season and with or not montoya ment to yesterday, he still has been abusing the chance ganassi has givin him.
Ok, the way I saw it, JMP said that he was slow on restarts, Truex, Jr. had a run on him at the restart. JMP shot low to block, Truex got into him and got him lose goin into trun 1. That is just racein. I also saw it that JMP was the first one to start grabin, Harvick just got out to talk about it and let him know that he wasn’t happy with JP. 18 laps left, and you have a wreck that takes out top runners, yea, the emotions are gonna be high, in the words of the late great Dale Earnhardt, that’s just racein.

i agree with you jordan harvick does need a suspension then maybe he wont try fighting a guy who had nothing to do with a wreck and maybe he will also remember that red flag means no working on your race car. come on kevin how many times has a guy wreck and collected other inoccent cars its not like he said i think i will knock kevin out of race so have a cry towel and get over it

A couple of things, 1-Montoya with a slower car did the right thing on BLOCKING ( watch more road course racing!!!) 2- Truex untastefull BUMP should have been penalized, he spun Montoya because he couldn’t get around him, hahaha looooser. 3-Harvick came to Montoya after blocking him and as soon as Montoya told him ( I got hit, and ran in to you) what happened, Harvick grabbed Montoya’s Helmet, then Montoya showed him what’s up. Pushed him back grabbed his helmet and didn’t care much for a fight with Harvick. As Montoya said in his interviews, ” I have a lot of respect for Harvick, or at least I have a little now”. the panzyyy Harvick didn’t expect Montoya to start pushing Harvick back and be ready to fight.
4- Harvick should have been penalized for not backing up his ” I told him I wanted to kick his Ass” . I guess that Montoya showed that it’s easier to say things than do them. lol…

It’s funny at the BGN race in Canada just one week ago, Harvick PURPOSELY punted #41 that was over shadowed by Gordon’s little hissy-fit. He had no gripes about how that went down and ultimately won the race by nascar not penalizing him for it and letting Gordon take out Ambrose. Now that the shoe was on the other foot, being the puntee he didn’t like that one bit.
Montoya made the first substantial physical contact after the drivers got out of their cars. Harvick was just yapping. Harvick never really put his hands on Montoya like Montoya did on Harvick. Harvick seemed very timid in that situation for whatever reason.
Also, why should Harvick get fined for saying he wanted to “whoop his ass”? Saying you were thinking about something you wanted to do in the past is different than actually making a direct threat or carrying it out.
So, should Truex have slowed up until somebody got into his rear and spun him out just to let Montoya carry on? Montoya would have more than likely still spun someone or got ran over the way he entered the turn. A quote ran through my head as I watched the melee unfold… “A lack of planning on your (Montoya’s) part does not constitute an emergency on mine (Truex’s).”
Montoya obviously caused the wreck.
I thought this whole situation was funny. The entire incident is because Truex bumped Juan Pablo Montoya. It was Truex fault entirely. Harvick should have watched the video before trying to act tough for the cameras. He just made himself look stupid. Montoya has a bad habit of “rough racing” sometimes but not anymore than Earnhardt Sr., Tony Stewart, or Jeff Gordon. If I was a car owner I would hire Montoya in a heartbeat !!!!

Well to set the record straight ,Being a Harvick fan and all ,i don’t think it was jpm fault this time atleast ,Truex did start the domino effect here ,jpm started the fighting by grabbing and pushing Kevin ,that my friend is and was jpm’s first big mistake (read you K. Harvick history you’ll know what i mean eg:G. Biffle-ball-bat ,R .Rudd. just to name a few) jpm would for surely have got his $@* crushed had Kevin not stayed cool about it. Kevin is not someone to mess with. And to everyone who said Kevin started pushing or grabbing first ,well watch the replay and get better glasses because j.p.m G.card was the first to get physical so i do not want to hear your bs. jpm wrecks someone every week to benifit from his poor driving skills ,this was the 2nd time he did it to Kevin and there are alot of po’d drivers out there who are going to pull jpm’s card.Like the person said before me ,Watch out jpm THE BRISTOL STOMP IS AROUND THE CORNER WAITING FOR YOU AND lots of drivers are waiting in line to give it to you. >:(

some of you need to go back and watch the tape! This was not Truex’s fault! JPM moved over to block a faster car ( the # 1) now watch the tape and you see the #1 try brake to avoid the #42, start wheel hopping and then hit the morrone and spin him. You mite seen two others wheel hopping ( 24,20) it was a problem all day. Slow blocks fast slow spins.
