Hamlin wins Duel #2, first Cup win for Toyota

Denny Hamlin gave Toyota its first victory at NASCAR’s top level, winning Thursday’s second qualifying race to set up a Daytona 500 showdown between Joe Gibbs Racing and mighty Hendrick Motorsports.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the first qualifier for Hendrick and will start on the second row of Sunday’s race with Hamlin. Hendrick driver Jimmie Johnson is on the pole. Tony Stewart will start in the third row for Gibbs.
Hendrick drivers Jeff Gordon and Casey Mears start from the next two rows, meaning six of the first 10 starting spots will be filled by Hendrick or Gibbs drivers.
It pits NASCAR’s top two teams against each other in a battle between Chevrolet and Toyota. Gibbs left General Motors this season when it grew tired of playing second fiddle to Hendrick, which won 18 of 36 races last year.
“It’s going to be the epic battle, and it should be the battle of a lifetime and the century,” Stewart quipped. “There may not be another battle of this proportion for the rest of my life, my career, for the century.”

Im a little pissed that toyota won…. I am happy it wasnt Cry baby stewart though.
plus Jr won the first race so thats the important one anyway
It is a big win but it’s not a points race. Let’s see how they run for 500 miles. The Toyotas looked pretty strong. The Dodges didn’t do bad either. And Carpentier even thanked Robby for helping him. It was a strange day of racing to say the least.
ganjadude jealous.
im jelous cause my driver won and stewart didnt??? how does that work?
And you’re pissed that a Toyota won? How does that work?
simple, i dont like toyota - next
I just love that fact that Jr won 2 for 2. Now hopefully he can pull a sweep. But, the bigger thing here is that for all the neighsayers that say Jr doesn’t have talent or what have you… WRONG! The guy just needed the equipment. And, really, so far he IS showing DEI what a loss they have taken on not working or listening to him. He knew he needed to get with the right equipment and mindset for winning and being competative. Sure its early, but more over, those people who doubt him, just got proven wrong again and already. Good move JR!!
This looks more and more like its going to be an awesome 500 race. All these cars look really good and even with each other. Guys you normally don’t see running up front, are doing so. Guys that always are up front aren’t so dominate. Its great for a real competition, aside from underdetected cheats. I still don’t care much for the appearance of the COT’s, but at least were seeing the commonalities with them now.
GO JR! SWEEP IT BABY!!!

ummm this would have been better in the Jr winning thread, not spammed in this thread…. And i am a jr fan
What do you mean, spammed into this thread? This is a part of the Duels threads, so I placed here. So what? This thread talks of Jr and Hamlin AND the other drivers AND the line up. So.

looks like you might be pissed off even more if this is a sneak peak of the 2008 season. It might turn out to be a Hendricks vs Toyota storyline.
and lay off the ganja….. dude.

I wish Tony would stop being so manic sometimes.
Yeah, He’s much better at spanking Kurt than firing off quotes!
I really think it might be a Chevy vs Toyota battle. Those Toyotas seemed to keep up VERY well. Plus by getting Gibbs on board they have access to one of the best engine departments. Give it two, three years Toyota will dominate the cup series like it does now with the truck series. You cant fight a company that has virtually endless cash flow to dump into the sport.
As long as Gordo didn’t win..I think that’s what was in Tony’s head after he got knocked from the lead. He pushed Denny to the win, which was awesome
