Jeff GordonJust when it looked like racing would snatch the spotlight from the cheaters at Daytona, Jeff Gordon’s winning car failed inspection. Gordon, who won the second of Thursday’s two 150-mile qualifying races, will now start the Daytona 500 in 42nd place.

NASCAR inspectors said his Chevrolet was almost an inch too low but blamed it on a part failure — not cheating. He was not stripped of the victory.

If the inspectors know it was a part failure, and not cheating, then why penalize him by making him start 42nd? Did common sense leave the building with Elvis, or are they on such a power trip after laying out all the other penalties this week they just don’t care?

  7. 7 Maria

dan, can you say that again but in adult like coherent speak??

  8. 8 Maria

Wes remember when they tried to disqualify Jr’s win for being 1/8 inch too low after his Daytona win? (I think it was Daytona where he and Waltrip stood up on top of his car jumping up and down) Yeah I’d say a tad power hungry.

  9. 9 DONNAGOODE24

SO HE’LL START 42ND SO WHAT! HE’S STILL THE MAN!

  10. 10 Brett

Ok… First Kasey Kahne, then Scott Riggs, Elliot Sadler, Matt Kenseth, Micheal Waltrip, and now Jeff Gordan? Jesus Christ NASCAR… What the hell is up next? Literally… NASCAR has gone power hungry…

  11. 11 goodolboy

Well it fits. Gordon has a few screws loose so his team just tried to help!

  12. 12 Alyssa

Ok, but if they penalize him for that where is HIS LOSS of points????? Remember they want to be fair!!!!

  13. 13 Jay

Thank you for someone having some sense. It was said by NASCAR THEMSELVES, in the press conference tonight, that the cause of his car being low was due to a part failure, a broken washer due to misinstallation of the shocks into the shock mounts. The video of the press conference is already out on youtube if you don’t beleave me. It was determined to be unsafe, and had no possible performance gain because it had put the rear end and shocks at such an angle his laps times would have been lower if this had been corrected. So because he was in a unsafe racecar, and the punishment thevye dealt out already to other teams; they had to do something, so they moved him to the back, which is pretty much proportionant. So really, Gordon had a faster car than he showed tonight, but the thing is have they been tuening the car since the shock mount broke and now will it perform differnet?

  17. 17 Liz

HA HA GORDON IS IN TROUBLE, but yeah NASCAR kinda is on a power trip

  18. 18 Chill

All I have to say is this is B. S. Why don’t we just give the championship to Gordon now.

  19. 19 aracerdude

In a restrictor plate race….does it matter? Only if it effects pit selection. Otherwise……..who cares. Did you see Matt Kenseth today in only 60 laps? He passed 20 cars in the first 3 laps…..

  20. 20 Ellie

Chill, thats the sickest thing I ever read…

Good i hope gordon stays back there

  21. 21 Jomama

I can’t wait to hear the crying and whining
    at the press conferences tomorrow…

    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

You all do realize that this particular part is issued to everyone by NASSCAR, right? It’s definitely not a cheating issue, but they did have to do something in light of all the recent penalties. I’m a huge Jeff Gordon fan, but I agree that any car failing post-race inspection, whether it be a part malfunction or not, does need to go to the back of the pack. I’m not too concerned about the starting position. If anyone can race their way to the front, it’s Gordon.

  23. 23 Glenstapo

Wes, an inch lower ride height is a huge advantage, so they have to penalize him, even if the infraction was because of a part failure.

    JEFF GORDON RULES!!

  24. 24 Brian

I’m not a Gordon fan, but in this instance I am not going to call him or his team cheaters. It was a part failure due to a mechanic not properly installing the shocks that Nascar hands out to all teams. If anything this was a disadvantage to Gordon, and actually pretty dangerous. He can thank that mechanic for starting 42nd, but I think that is penalty enough. The reason the penalty isn’t stiffer is probably because it was due to a part that Nascar distributes, and not an alteration of parts that occured at the team’s shop like some of the other teams this week. And I think starting 42nd is a pretty big penalty, especially at Daytona, knowing there will probably be a wreck early in this race. I’m sure Jeff would rather be up there with Jr, Tony, Burton, etc. in those tense opening laps than in the back with some of those other drivers.

  25. 25 SIGHTSEEKER

WELL IAM SURE THIS MECHANIC HAS INSTALLED A FEW SHOCKS IN HIS LIFE TIME. THIS WAS DONE ON PURPOSE, AND YOU CAN’T TELL ANT DIFFERANT. JEFF CHEATS JUST LIKE THE REST. TAKE THE POINTS AWAY JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE HAD AND FINE HIM AND THE TEAM. COME ON LETS PLAY FAIR NASCAR. OH YA I FORGOT THAT JEFFY THE WINNER & HENRICK .. SORRY ABOUT THAT SLIP UP , GO AHEAD AND PUT JEFF ON THE FRONT ROW , OR BETTER STILL JUST GIVE HIM THE WIN.
THE RACE ON SUNDAY COULD JUST BE A BIG PRACTISE THEN FOR THE REST OF THE TEAMS JEFF SUCKS.

  26. 26 Anon

Well lets see…considering the same offense was comitted last year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when Jimmie Johnson won the race. The car went through post race tech and was found too low, both rear shocks compressed themselves during the race…if it was just one I would consider it a part failure but 2 COME ON! It’s a team thing with Hendrick here, they’ve figured out a way to get the rear shocks to compress during the race. NASCAR is catering to the teams that have the most fan base out there…they never took the win from Johnson and they’re not taking it away from Gordon. If they were consistent then it wouldn’t be such a big issue.

  27. 27 Kyle

well, first of all…there is no points yet so they cant take them away due to the fact that it was a qualifying race…secondly, at daytona it really doesnt matter where you start because you can go from the front to the back in a matter of a half of a lap anyway…thirdly i am a gordon fan and the mechanic that installed that shock is a fucking idiot because all he did was take away the performance of the car by installing it wrong (if he did do it on puropse) because his car would have been faster if it waz in properly

  28. 28 Melissa

Here’s what I’ve noticed the past couple of years when reading posts such as these…

    1. Gordon fans use proper grammar and correct spelling.

    2. Gordon haters rarely use puncuation and the spelling is worse than my 6-year-old’s letters to Santa.

    3. Gordon haters seem to reiterate incessantly that Jeff is a whiner, yet the majority of the whining being done is by the Gordon hater.

    4. Gordon haters also like to make jokes that Jeff is gay. I’m going to assume you mean that he’s “happy gay”. After all, he is married to one Ingrid Vandebosch and that’s not so shabby.

So, continue with the rantings and as Justin Timberlake would say, “Cry Me a River” because I’m enjoying the free entertainment and countless hours of finding mistakes in your posts!!!

  29. 29 Ben H!!

    Right on Melissa!!!!!!!

  30. 30 Anonymous

    Melissa you are dumb…

  31. 31 Melissa

I beg to differ, Anonymous. I’m quite intelligent, which is why I’m a Jeff Gordon fan!

  32. 32 T

The so called cheating…….It is called competition & attention for NASCAR (not the racers so much) it might as well be Joe Shmuck they fine who cares…You see NASCAR is in a competition for fans just like every other sport…Right now they are going up against College Basketball so they need ALLLL they headlines they can get in papers and on tv ect….You have to understand they have 100s of millions and millions of advertisers dollars in commercials & on drivers suits hence product placement EVERY WHERE…You will be watching the news about the cheating and they will follow up the story right AFTER THIS COMMERCIAL!!! We are all brain washed into a GIANT COMMERCIAL!

There is so much more to NASCAR than the NASCAR people think they know….Just think a great big business NASCARinc. Very much like USAinc. and you will get the picture….

Here is a short story: A guy wanted to build a Nascar Speedway and have Nascar race at it..(takes a knowing the right people just not anyone can do it) anyway the guy went to a bank for funding the bank said NO…The guy bought the bank that next week fired the guy that said NO, loaned himself the money and built the Speedway (true story)….That is cut & dry, as easy as I can explain it how NASCAR is in a bigger picture..A GREAT BIG CUT THROAT BUSINESS………………………….

I have a degree from a Division I school and an extremely good job. I am also very literate and manage
    to spell very well.

And Gordon is still an idiot.

And for the record, it doesn’t surprise me that you are also a Justin Timberlake fan. He’s a wimp too.
