J.D. Gibbs would like to sign Tony Stewart to an extension that will keep the two-time Nextel Cup champion at Joe Gibbs Racing at least through 2011. Stewart’s contract at JGR runs through 2009. But with a talented stable of young talent in the developmental pool and Stewart joking about retirement several times this season, the president of JGR would like to find out just what his marquee driver wants.
“Hey, we want Tony to be here for a long time,” Gibbs said before Sunday’s race at Infineon Raceway. “If he said at the end of ‘09 I’m done, officially done, hey, we understand that. Let’s go get a plan. The reality is, I think he wants to go [on]. How long does he want to go? I want all of those guys on the same page.”

- Could Stewart leave Gibbs if they move to Toyota?

Well, whatever he does I don’t think its going to be retirement. I think he’s looking for a couple more championships.
I agree Axel and I hope he continues, but I wonder if he will want to drive a toyota?
That’s what I’m wondering too, KK… Will Tony want to drive a Toyota and does it really matter? If it has wheels, you can pretty much bet he can win in it!
I don’t know why any team in their right minds would want to leave Chevy, especially for an upstart like Toyota, unless you want to be the big boy, which Gibbs certainly would be. I bet Toyota will make it more than worth it for JGR to leave Chevy!
tony was in a pontiac in ‘02, oldsmobile back in irl days… doesn’t seem to matter what manufacturer carries him… (yes i know both are gm, blah blah)
He also used to have an affiliation with Dodge on some of his dirt teams. I guess if it has wheels and is cable of spinning a tire he would probably drive it!
He still runs good so as long as he can be competitive and wants to race he should. I think if they went to Toyota they will probably stuggle and he would leave. Toyota might make it worthwhile for Gibbs but Tony races for racing not money.
after stewart is done in 09 with his contract he said he was going to leave and go back to latemodel racing
He probably doesn’t want to be in a Toyota.
Hey Jarrod…I have a son named Jarrod, born on Tony’s 9th birthday!
Anyway, I hope Tony signs the extension…He’s grown so much through the circuit and I am sure he’s got so much more to show us.
Hey Dustin you dont know anything…..hes not gonna go back to latemodel racing till way after 09. Hell I think he may start up his cup team (while hes still driving for gibbs of course) before he retires from NASCAR.
