Joe GibbsJoe Gibbs Racing still hasn’t announced whether it will switch to Toyotas next year, but the buzz is that it will. Some clues? Tony Stewart’s souvenir trailers were selling merchandise at 50% off regular price last week at the Brickyard, Stewart’s home track and a place where the Hoosier native is wildly popular.

Also, a source at Richard Childress Racing said it has been approached by Hall of Fame Racing, a satellite Gibbs team, about buying engines from the newly merged RCR-Dale Earnhardt Inc., engine operation in 2008. Presumably, HOF is hedging its bets, if it ends up not being part of a Gibbs move to Toyota.

Hmm. This would be gigantic for Totyoa! They would get 3 cars that are easily locked into the top 35, so they would at least be guaranteed to make the first 5 races, and after that I don’t think it matters if you put Stewart in a Daewoo, he could easily stay in the top 35 no matter what the name on the car is! Same pretty much goes for Hamlin. Yeley isn’t in the same class as his teammates, but he’s a very good driver too, and is well within the top 35. Plus, they might add a 4th car next year. Their R&D team is well established and they have a great engine department. I don’t know that JGR would be competing for the championship with Toyota next year, but they certainly would make Toyota better!

Don’t know that it would be that big for JGR, except that they would be the big boy for their manufacturer, whereas with Chevy they have to compete with Hendrick, DEI, RCR, etc.. It’s easy to see who would be the top dog between JGR, Waltrip, and Bill Davis!

no, gibbs is not going to toyota, that would be horrible
denny and tony are my favorite drivers and they need to
stay with team chevy. if gibbs switches to toyota, denny
and tony better go to RCR

    I HATE SELL OUTS!!!!

This would put Toyota on the map! All they need is more torque and some GOOD teams and they are rolling!

JGR has the engine shop, the drivers, and the support for the teams to do what Toyota needs and be successful in Nascar.

  5. 5 Vinny

this is retarded!! i hope tony leaves the team!! i hate Toyota!!!!

Very intresting. I remember a year ago , Robing Miller was on Wind Tunnell and he predicted that Toyota would come into Cup with a few medeocre teams , struggle fairly badly and then for the 2nd year buy into either Evernham , Penske or Gibbs and then they would be a big factor from then on. Its kind of the same thinkg they did in the truck series. We will have to see if this comes true. I bet Tony wont be happy if this comes true.

  7. 7 Christie

i hope he doesnt do something stupid like that!!.

  8. 8 andrew

so does that mean toyota will get access to all that chevy data?
    very cheeky by toyota

  9. 9 MoFo

This is just like Gibbs. Chevy…Pontiac…Chevy…Toyota. He and Penske should just merge and get it over with. Then they can switch manufacturers at will.

  10. 10 BFDracing

COOL! Tony would rock in a Toyota! Gibbs is great choice for Toyota!

  11. 11 Axel Foley

I’m mixed about this. I do want to see all the manufacturers in Cup be competitive, however. This would surely do it.

  12. 12 Andrew

    Axel;
Im afraid that this may over-do it since all Toyota teams share information (which is something probably encouraged by Toyota management) and with a strong organization such as Gibbs, I believe they may be able to turn NASCAR into the IRL series forcing all manufacturers out in the long run.

If Gibs goes to toyota next year i will no longer be a fan of the sport. the sport does not need toyoat in nascar. why dont someone stop them this is an american sport. and it should stay like that.and who every buy a toyota, you are just wasting your money. and if you live in america and you own a toyota move to japan now aaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG this is america so get the hell out.

  14. 14 MoFo

Hey Anon, I’ve owned 3 straight foreign cars, Nissan, Acura, Lexus. When America can put out quality automobiles to rival foreign automakers, then maybe I’ll go back to a domestic. Until then, give me imports.

  15. 15 Joe

Ive had 3 American made cars that had over 200,000 miles on them and never replaced a transmission or engine on any of them. I had a Honda that crapped out on me at 98,000. In all reality a car will last as long as you let it and if you do routine maintenance on it.

It makes sense if Toyota is giving you a ton of resources. The current Toyota teams have taken a beating and are still working out the bugs for Toyota. Waltrip’s deal was basically a start up operation and in WAY over it’s head. Not one of the current Toyota reams has drivers or equipment as good as Gibbs current roster. Dropping Yeley for KyBu is a big plus. Trust me, Gibbs and Tony don’t like looking stupid. This trio could be a major powerhouse to take on the likes of Roush, RCR,DEI and Hendrick straight up!

I really hope Joe Gibbs isn’t gonna sell out like this, they’re one of the top teams in nascar and they’re going to switch to toyota and run 40th every week?? truely a stupid move!!!

  18. 18 Shannon

I think thats a dumd Idea !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chevy rules -american baby -
Tony get out of there and come to the Hendricks side!!!!

This is the best thing to happen to NASCAR! Toyota has more money to spend than any other manufacturer, and Gibbs has the resources. Chevy’s arent American made, neither are Fords, and Chryslers…. the Monte Carlo and the Impala, aswell as the Fusion, Charger, and Avenger are all made in Mexico…. look in the inside door panel the next time you go to a dealership. My moms Toyota Matrix was made in California… so who is truely American? The one who gives American auto workers a job and doesnt screw them over (Toyota)? or the lame “American” Manufacturers we know as the Big 3 who export their jobs to cheap labor?… better to some research… as for Gibbs, this will be great. By the end of 2008, Toyota will be dominating the circuit like they already do in the Truck Series and once more, the true American car manufacturer, Toyota, will make the Big 3, once again, look like crap. It really wont matter what Tony drives, he will win. He won a championship in a Pontiac when they (Pontiac) were the worst cars on the circuit… Bobby Labonte did the same for Gibbs in 2000. Shows that Gibbs has the research and development, and Toyota has the $$$.

Now, there will be a legit manufactures battle.

  21. 21 Joe

im w/ hot rod todd on this one sell outs suck. no one cares about values or integrity any more all they care
about is that cold hard cash

  22. 22 Chip

Why not go to Dodge now that Tony’s friend Bob Nardelli is in charge ???? I don’t think Tony or Gibbs are that ready to loose week in and week out with Toyota.Too many problems with Toyota I will stick with cheering for Tony & JGR but I won’t be happy about the car choice.

  23. 23 CHEATER

This is about Un- American as you could get ….Smoke driving a Toyota……Driving something from the people that attacked Pearl Harbor……makes my blood boil…….No more Home Depot for me if this come true…………

  24. 24 Solid Snake

Toyota is greatest. We, Japanese, are greatest in the world.

Don’t be jealous of us, you know we hate you people too.

    Chevy sucks.
    Ford sucks.
    Dodge sucks.
