A few weeks ago, I reported in this column that Brian France and other NASCAR Party members spent a week in Communist China to “discuss possible projects with government, sports, and business officials in Beijing.” Well, it appears that Brian had some good discussions.
Barely three weeks after the Great Leader’s return to the States, it was quietly announced, in a two sentence paragraph on usatoday.com, that a Chinese owned company would sponsor a car in Nextel Cup competition. The company is Haier (pronounced Hi-er) America, a subsidiary of Haier Group, China’s number one company amongst “Top Ten Global Brands” of the country. The car they sponsored is the No. 13 Ginn Racing Chevy driven by Joe Nemechek, with the company making their debut at Darlington Raceway this past Saturday night.
As I asked in my column a couple of weeks ago, before the Ginn / Haier sponsorship was announced, where is the outrage amongst the fans about this move? More specifically, where is the outrage that is and / or has been directed at Japanese-owned Toyota when they announced they were getting in the Cup Series in the first place?
Granted, the Chinese involvement isn’t on the scale of Toyota, but a person would think that if there was such an uproar about NASCAR “selling out” to a foreign car manufacturer, one that is from a friendly country, no less, surely the sponsorship of a Cup car by a Communist-owned company would be unthinkable.
One would also think, seeing as how NASCAR is all fired up for diversity and world dominance, that a big announcement would be forthcoming from the King himself. Something along the lines about how his trip to China was a rousing success and that the NASCAR Party was all set in place to bring about the end to all wars and global warming; but that was not the case.
Unfortunately for Brian, he was upstaged by some kid who announced that he just can’t get along with his stepmother any longer and will soon be moving out. Turns out that kid has more worshippers than the King…no wonder he was docked 100 points!
One thing that I find especially ironic, sadly enough, is the fact that the guy that now drives a Communist sponsored car used to drive the car sponsored by the United States Army! Only in NASCAR can an owner get sponsorship monies from not only his own government, but a Communist one as well! Ain’t life grand!

Oh quit complaining…this is why NASCAR sucks, a bunch of fricken complainers that race cars for millions of dollars every Sunday whining about how bad they have it. The fans, drivers, and most of all the media…
i agree…_____________. if they pony up the cash then let them…
just like a couple of _______ new nascar bandwagon jumpers .. dont have heart for what the real sport was about. and were it roots come from . yall are problly a couple of kurt bush fans that just like the 2 car …i agree with this letter and prob have more experince in nascar than the both of u combined …..shot up and wit to see them wreck thats all u newbies wanna see. no respect______.
Please people…all we ask is watch the language. Thanks.
Guys! If we truly want NASCAR to be global, you must give an inch and let even a Chinese sponsor to be involved in Nextel Cup. This may open the powers that be to possibly run an event at either Shanghai or Zhuhai. Maybe have an international swing that include events at Shanghai, Twin Ring Motegi and Suzuka or Fuji.
watching our language is like watching paint dry…Freedom of Speech cant tell me what i can and cant say srry but mister editor that pisses me off
Jameson Jones i dont want NASCAR to go global going to mexico and canada is already too much and definitely no japan and no china im one of them crazy southern race fans that hated nascar going to the west cost on labor day instead of Darlington i want my southern 500 back hell go to California on the crown royal race and give me back the traditional races
NASCAR will never be global but Brian France has his head shoved so far up in a certain
area that he will never see that, if he was more worried about the state of the sport than
trying to make a quick buck he would see the sport is getting weaker because of him, and
to an above poster, NASCAR did race at Motegi as an exhibition where it was the first time
Dale and Dale Jr raced each other.
Who cares what country they are from. They want to be part of NASCAR so let them!
I dont knwo about you but I don’t want Nascar to be global, its not gascar its nascar, national! I want it all-american and all american tracks. I want Cananda and Mexico off the track list. I also think you should be of american birth and sponsors american. Its dumb and all it is a sign of is greed, and that Brian France for sure. This is the gayiest frickin thing ive ever seen, communism in nascar. I love the sport, but damn do I hate the authority.
Geesh, who served up the Kool-Aid?
First of all David Jr, Freedom of Speech isn’t the issue. The proper usage of civil discourse is. And despite your protestations to the contrary “mister editor” as you call him has every right to delete any language he/she deems inappropriate.
You by all indications crossed the line and got smacked down for it.
As a test of that send any MSM newspaper utilizing the same language and see if it gets printed.
Secondly, David Jr NASCAR isn’t going global as you seem to think.
You won’t see Jeffy or Dale Jr racing in Shanghai. What you may see is more investment via sponsorship and possibly tin top/stock car type races (sanctioned by NASCAR) in China or other Asian venues featuring Asian based drivers.
Those races will be in response to and in direct comnpetition to the F1 and FIA sanctioned SpeedCar Series.
Anonymous”
“I also think you should be of american birth and sponsors american.”
So… I guess that means you would also agree that non-American made cars shouldn’t be allowed to race under NASCAR sanction.
Right?
Hate to break it to you but that would only leave Toyota on the track.
xenophobe!
Have to be born American to race in NASCAR? pffft, ha ha ha. Yeah…..
marc, that would leave no one, their isn’t one automotive car company that produces models
on a global scale that has 100% one country car/truck/suv/etc…
All I have to say is relate to Economics, EXCHANGE CREATES WEALTH
Brian France struck out in New York , Colorado so now he is in China. Hey , clown , give Kentucky a race. Quit trying to force nascar on people who dont want it.
i love the idea of Nascar in Canada.. how ever it is only Bush seris that is comming. and well they did pick the worst place in Canada to have it.. and after there experiance they have there i can pretty much guarente they will never come back again!! sorry about the spelling..
But i do have to say that i do think all sponcerships of cars should be American!!
Lost, I definitely agree with you on the bad track choice for NASCAR to go to Canada. Especially with the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve grabbing all who dare to go fast in the last chicane and if the drivers think about doing that, most of the race will be run behind the safety car. I could see them in the future going to a place like Mosport or even Mont Tremblant but since the Rolex Series will be running as a support series, they might be forced to stay in Montreal for the forseeable future.
Communist China is not someone any of us should want to associate with. This proves how much France is lacking in moral character.
NASCAR should not go global when they can’t get things right with what they have already.
On a side note, the dude who wrote this article is a sad excuse for a journalist.
