Rockingham SpeedwayFormer NASCAR driver Andy Hillenburg was the successful bidder Tuesday in an auction for North Carolina Speedway, formerly a NASCAR series mainstay.

Hillenburg’s high bid was $4 million, and the total price for the purchase will be $4.4 million, including a premium.

Hillenburg, who said he has two minority partners in the purchase, hopes to return some form of stock-car racing to the facility within a year.

The auction attracted about 100 people, but there were few bidders.

I definitely saw this coming (a driver buying the track, not Andy Hillenburg). I thought you might get Rusty and Mark Martin to pony up and try to save The Rock.

At least it was bought by a driver trying to get some form of racing in there! I was worried it would get bought by some developer and it would be leveled to build a mega-mall or something stupid.

I’d love to see NASCAR racing back at the Rock, as I’m sure most fans would. Regardless of whether they’re old or new fans, everyone can appreciate a little change, and it seems like something other than the cookie-cutter mile and a half tracks would be a very welcome change!

This excites me knowing a racing guy who loves the sport wants to bring racing back. I know it wont be Nextel but at least something!

That is great news that a driver bought it. I wondered who whould show up for hte auction and worried that a development company or someone not into racin would come in and tear it down. Any racing is beter than no racing.

I wish that Busch or something would go back to the Rock for a race a year or so.

North Wilkesboro would be a great place for almost any type of stock car style event. It was and still could be a great place to race. Run the ASA, All-Pro, trucks, sprints or carts. Maybe throw in an ARCA race too. This is Short Track Racing 101.

This guy is an ARCA slug that hasn’t made any waves in a long time. A driver buying a track isn’t always a good thing either. At first it appears to be good, then they cry as bad as the France family. Take a look at what that schmuck did that bought Illiana. He was a driver and he really sucked. He made improvements. He started charging all his vendors utility fees. He took the driver’s slabs that they paid for away from them and made them pay again. After 9 seasons as owner he’s finally getting new bleachers. The current ones have been in place since the Korean War. If this clown tells you it’s raining, go outside and see for yourself!
