Florida lawmakers push for NASCAR license plates again

The NASCAR license plate is back.
State Rep. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, announced Monday that he is sponsoring a bill to create a specialty NASCAR license plate.
In 2005, state legislators approved a NASCAR plate, but that was contingent on Daytona Beach being awarded the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The hall went to Charlotte, N.C., so the plate was never created. Proceeds from the new plates would go to the Florida Sports Foundation, NASCAR and the NASCAR Foundation, which is a charitable group.
Hays’ bill also creates a “Support the Troops” license plate. The proceeds from that plate would go to the families of deployed soldiers from Florida.
Hays is scheduled to give details on the bill at a press conference in Tallahassee on Wednesday.
Sen. Carey Baker, R-Eustis, is sponsoring similar bills in the state Senate.
