Rusty WallaceQ – Atlanta Motor Speedway has produced a lot of close finishes. What is it about the track that creates such close racing?

“The track creates such close finishes because of the momentum that drivers build while racing in and out of Turn 4. The preferred groove is on the bottom of the racetrack, but it’s tough to pass, so drivers will move to the higher side. Then they’ll go into Turn 3 side-by-side, attempting to outrun each other to the start-finish line. When you come out of Turn 4, you’re carrying so much speed off the corner, it helps drivers in their ability to make that pass as they near the start-finish line.”

Q - Who should fans keep their eye on as the driver to beat in the Cup race?

“You definitely have to keep your eye on Team Hendrick – Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Those guys are so good week in and week out; you always have to watch out for them. Another fellow who’s going to be tough is Tony Stewart. He has had some struggles as of late, but that track suits him well and they will be running the old car – one that he has a good handle on.”

Q – In the NASCAR Busch Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park, what should viewers watch for that is unique to that track?

“Memphis Motorsports Park is one of the original old rough-and-tumble short tracks. It’s real bumpy and gets real slick as the race wears on. You’ll see a lot of contact, bumping, banging and crashing. It’s exciting to watch and the track is going to create some exciting, full-contact racing with drivers losing their tempers on the short track.”
