ESPN: Sprint will replace Nextel as series sponsor name for 2008

Beginning with the 2008 season, Sprint will replace Nextel as title sponsor of NASCAR’s premiere racing series, multiple high-ranking industry sources told ESPN.com on condition of anonymity. The series will be known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, sources said.
NASCAR declined comment. Dean Kessel, Sprint’s NASCAR marketing director, denied the claims, and said Sprint/Nextel is still sorting the proposition out with NASCAR. Kessel also said that multiple outstanding details must be finalized internally before a decision can be made either way. This would mark the third time in four seasons NASCAR’s Cup Series experienced a sponsorship-based name change.
From 1972-2003, the Cup Series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds tobacco through its Winston cigarette brand. Then, starting in 2004, Nextel assumed the naming rights to the most popular racing series in America.

That being the case, Nascar needs to drop their suit against AT & T. It’s only natural for the company paying the bills to want their name on the car or series.

Winston Cup and Nextel Cup had a good “flow” I guess?

I had a hard time getting used to Nextel Cup, but just when I got used to it they are changing it again. We will all go through a few slips but we will eventually get used to it. I Hope!

i have loved nascar for a long time and actully have ties with certin race teqsms and i feel like i and begining to tire from all the executive bullshit in the series.

i vote for anything but nextel sprint or any other bullshit thing that doesnt sound good. i still got my winston cup hate sitting in my room and id never buy a nextel or sprint. you guys may think it wierd or some other stuff but i say we go find walt disney and eather unfreeze him or what ever we have to do to get him ALIVE, bc if theres one genus out there but for bill france the 1st its him who could fix this problem. and then we could call it the disney cup how great does that sound!!!
