Edwards discusses penalty, Kansas race on Sirius radio

Thursday on “The Morning Drive” on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, hosts Marty Snider and David Poole spoke with driver Carl Edwards, who talked about the penalty levied against the #99 team after it failed post-race inspection last Sunday in Dover, and looked ahead to this weekend’s race at the mile and a half racetrack at Kansas Speedway:
On the 25-point penalty imposed after his race car was found to be too low in the right rear quarter panel:
Host, Marty Snider: “At 25 points is that about as good as you guys could have expected it to turn out?”
Carl Edwards: “You know, I think, yeah, if they’re going to give a penalty then that’s about as good as we can expect. I’m extremely frustrated about the penalty. That’s the first time a low quarter height has been assessed points that I could find in the history of penalties since 2001. The intent of that rule is to keep people from having high quarter panels and we had a disadvantage and I think it was a mistake to levy points on that.”
Host, David Poole: “Obviously there’s a euphoria after a win, especially a Chase win, it must feel great. And somebody walks up to you and says, ‘Hey, there might be a problem with the race car.’ Is that like sticking a needle in a balloon?”
Edwards: “Yeah, it’s a pretty bad feeling. Hey, if they had said the quarters were high I’d have said I guess I’ve got to be penalized for that. I just couldn’t believe that we were even talking about that. It’s a bad deal. NASCAR, they’re in a box because they have this rule written that really just doesn’t apply to that situation and so they have to follow the rule. I understand that part of it but it’s just hard. You go to a local dirt track it would be like pulling in and being too heavy or something. It’s like, if you want to run heavy you can. It did kind of change [the feeling after the win] a little bit but deep down, my team and I talked about it, we know we won that race because we did everything right and for whatever reason that thing was low. But, yeah, it made the feeling change a little bit.”
Snider: “So how do you handle it from here? Do you, this week, go to John Darby and Mike Helton and say, ‘Hey, help me out.’ I know you guys have officially appealed but beyond that do you say things in the garage area or do you move on?”
Edwards: “I mean, you just move on. I’ve talked to Mike Helton. I talked to Brian France, to John Darby, and all of them assured me, they all said, ‘Hey, we don’t think you had an advantage. We don’t think you did anything intentionally.’ And it’s too competitive. You can’t carry it on. We have to just put it to bed and move on and go try to win at Kansas and hopefully this won’t affect the end of the year. Hopefully, 25 points doesn’t make a difference at the end.”
On this weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway:
Snider: “When you look at the ten Chase races, the mile and a half tracks are truly your strength, don’t you feel?”
Edwards: “Yeah, I think there’s a few guys. But if you look back at the last downforce race at California we ran great and had a good car. I think Jimmie [Johnson]’s going to be real fast. There’s no telling how fast Kurt Busch will be. They’ve been spectacular. I’m a little nervous about him. Our program has been great and [crew chief] Bob [Osborne] has got kind of a, this is a new car, a little bit different. It might run great. I told him, ‘Just put everything you’ve got into this race because this’ll be huge.’”
Edwards: “This is a big race. This is going to kind of be the barometer or measuring stick for really how you’re going to run at Atlanta and Texas and Homestead. I think this race is huge for the Chase. The reason we ran so well in the Chase in 2005 is, really, we didn’t run well anywhere but the mile and a half tracks. We just ran so great at those tracks that we got a ton of points. So if somebody comes out the box and just blows everybody away at this race you’re going to have to watch for that person to win the championship.”

The intent of that rule is to keep people from having high quarter panels and we had a disadvantage. Thats funny because when I said that same thing in a previous blog , several people argued that point. Maybe they should just watch golf from now on.
carl should have been docked 100 points jack roush is a big cry baby he his cars should win ever race
i hope all of the roush cars blows up ever week then cat in the hat is a big cry baby he had better be thank full for that man far pulling hem out of that plane or he would not be here
How old are you? 2? Sounds like it. You talk about Jack Roush being a crybaby, but you are the real crybaby here.
guest #2, if you were my kid I’d kick your a$$!! Hasn’t anyone ever told you that wishing such bad things on others comes back to YOU 3×3??
you know, people can DIE when such things happen, that’s a heck of a sentence to put on someone just because you don’t like them. For as much as I dislike Tony Stewart, I’d never wish death on him—-truthfully!! These men have FAMILIES who love them and depend on them to be there to be a husband, a father, a son, an uncle, a brother, a cousin—–what in the HELL is wrong with you??
________while personally I disagree with this penalty and am NOT even that much of an Edwards fan, if Tony gets tapped one week and his rear end is low and is NOT penalized then carl shouldn’t be penalized the following week!
It’s true that a low rear end has no disadvantage to the racecar, my husband raced cars for over 10 years and taught me that much in our first season together. We did have a rear spoiler one year that put our car 1/4 inch higher than regulations and were asked to remove it—you could visually see the advantage we got from it while coming out of turn 4 (where we were standing in the pits.)
I’m really upset and sickened by guest #2’s comment. I’ve been a widow for nearly 8 years and counsel other widows and widowers and their children and for someone to wish a person’s car blows up —-KNOWING the dangers involved in auto racing just appauls me!
Grow up Guest #2!! You’re pretty childish and to be quite blunt——ignorant—-completely and totally unintelligent! This train of thought is unacceptable and has no purpose in racing or anywhere in life!
my most sincere apologies to guest #2—-it’s guest #3 who ticked me off
This new policy of letting anyone come on here as a “guest” is not working out very well. Above is a good example with 3 different people named “guest” and not knowing who is saying what.
Guest #2 and #3 were the same loser!
