Carl EdwardsUPDATE:

Roush to appeal penalty

NASCAR advised Roush Fenway Racing today that it will issue penalties against Carl Edwards (25 driver points), Jack Roush (25 owner points) and crew chief Bob Osborne ($25,000) for violating a rear fender height rule following Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway. Roush Fenway Racing president, Geoff Smith gave a statement following NASCAR’s announcement:

“We have the misfortune of violating a rule which makes no sense. It was promulgated to address restrictor plate races, not downforce races. I say misfortune because we are being penalized for a violation that actually impaired the car’s performance. We intend to appeal the unfair assessment of the point’s penalty. What is unfair is that Carl is receiving a penalty that is 250% greater in its effect than a similarly assessed penalty against a non-’Chase’ driver. ‘Chase’ drivers are competing for a total of 1,950 points. All drivers competed for 5,070 points in the first 26 races. Do the math. The net effect is that a 25 point penalty falls unfairly hard on a ‘Chase’ contender. That’s simply not right. To equalize the penalty impact on all competitors not more than 10 points should have been taken from a ‘Chase’ contender.”

Carl Edwards was docked 25 points Tuesday because his race-winning car failed inspection at Dover International Raceway.

The penalty drops Edwards from third in the Chase for the championship standings to sixth. He’s now 28 points behind series leader Jeff Gordon.

Team owner Jack Roush, who celebrated his 100th win Sunday with Edwards’ victory, also was docked 25 owner points and crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $25,000.

Edwards’ No. 99 Ford was deemed to be too low following post-race inspection. Although NASCAR determined the height infraction was not intentional, the team still was penalized in accordance with NASCAR’s strict inspection policy.

Kyle Busch and Johnny Sauter received similar penalties when their cars failed inspection following the July race at New Hampshire. Tony Stewart’s car was too low following last week’s race in New Hampshire, but NASCAR ruled it was caused by race damage.

Edwards dominated the second half of Sunday’s race to score his third victory of the season. The win lofted him thick into the title hunt, just three points behind Gordon. Now he heads to Kansas Speedway mired in the middle of the cluttered standings.

The top six drivers are separated by 28 points.

Em. What happened to 100/100/100K for any infractions with the COT? Even if it wasn’t intentional, they’ve dished out those penalties for seemingly unintentional infractions already this season.

I agree thats crap nascar said stiff fine and penalities regardless of the reason, they shouldve got the same as jr and gordon, johnson.

so let me guess…all the cars that were included in that
wreck is going to be thrown out of the way because they all
wrecked? seems to me that nacsar is picking their fav. drivers
every race, and to let things slide if it happens to them.

Ignorance. The 100/100/100K were to do strictly for COT infractions, such as COT body altering or playing outside the area. This had to do with the shocks settling. This is outside the COT guidelines, and thus gets the same fine as Gordon did in the Gatorade 125 earlier this year. Some argue his victory should be taken away, but just as Gordon’s was not, Nascar has not done so over the past. This is the constant same penalties you people have been preaching for. Ignorance.

wats wrong with NASCAR now!! if it was Jeff Gordon or Jimmir Jnson or Dale jr. they would fine thenm 100 thousand and more!!! thats insane!! i hate the new NASCAR!! all it is, is play the favorite!! STUPID!!!!!!!!

Okay. Im a huge Dale Jr fan, and Guest at 3:14pm, your
totally wrong. JG JJ and Dale Jrs infractions were all
on body work. Carl’s was his shocks setting in during
the race. Not to mention, YOU THINK JR JG and JJ
wouldn’t be favored by nascar??? I’m not saying they are. But saying
Edwards is favored over them is plain stupid. Good call Nascar.
    this penalty can be big.

I agree with Andy. It’s all about the points and 25 will be costly.

For sure. However J.R. from Speed TV was saying he didnt expect driver points off and listed his points why, and I agreed with him, so the points deduction is still an “ehhh” for me.

I’m sure glad “True” Nascar fans like Andy and Tony-a are on here to bring up the I.Q. level. Some of the goofy comments in here show they don’t know squat about past penalties and what they were for. Go back to watching WWE wrestling and the Jerry Springer show.

Carl Edwards as a NASCAR pet?? Next time warn me about a comment like that so I don’t spit my soda all over the screen.

I think 25 points was to be expected and anything less or more would have been a surprise. I get tired of hearing the standard Jack Roush whiney rhetoric. Next up is the standard lawsuit threat if Edwards loses the Chase by less than 25 points. Suck it up, Jack, and take your lumps like a big boy just like the other players in NASCAR.

if all yall whiney punks would think about this, it is , as i agree a retarded action.what does it matter if it is the chase or the first race? everyone DAWGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSASSSS HMS AND THE MAN JEFF GORDON JIMMY J. THE CREW CHEIFS AND EVERYBODY ELSE AND THEM GET THE WORSE OF BOTH WORLDS SO SCREWWWWWWW UUUUUUUUUUUUUUU THANKS JOHN ASHLEY JEFF GORDONS #1 FAN FROM HELENA GA

Helena GA, Now that tells me all I need to know about that post.
Gordo should be driving for Roush, they would make a great pair of whiners. They could console each other after each race they didn’t win with a round of “who should we blame this loss on today”. !!!

  16. 16 bigmikepardue Registered User

loook if was jr or gordon or jimmie they would have gotten a 100/100/and$100k find so quit cryin he is still in sixth
place 28 points behind the leader thats not bad people

  17. 17 Lee Registered User

Guest jrs infraction had nothing to do with the body it was a bracket that wasnt approved big deal it wouldnt have given him any advantage,if nascar deamed it was a shock that settled why fine and take points then? evidently nascar seen something wrong with it so he shouldve got the same fine and penalities that jr gordon and johnson got.

  18. 18 Anonymous

ok the last 3 drivers that were too low. got no points or nothing at all. so why did carl get points taken.. yes i am a huge carl fan… he doesnt whine, he doesnt throw fits. so get off his tail people.
