Dale Earnhardt, JrDEI and Hendrick have begun negotiating a deal that would see the #8 go to Hendrick Motorsports and keep the number with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.  Hendrick has submitted a proposal to DEI. This is an intricate proposal that carries obvious emotions.

NASCAR owns the car numbers and leases them to the teams each year, and gives the team that ran a respective number the previous season last right of refusal on running it again the following year. Therefore, DEI holds the rights to the No. 8.

NASCAR said it won’t stand in the way of any potential transaction.

Earnhardt last week reiterated his want to drive the No. 8 in 2008, but said if the deal ultimately doesn’t pan out he’d like No. 81, which he has run at times in the NASCAR Busch Series.

Good God people..what does a number or sponsor have to do with anything?

  2. 2 Lee

The samething gordon or most drivers would want if went to another team same as football baseball players etc. there always wanting certain numbers.

  3. 3 chevy_chica

Umm, good God… there is history with that number. AND Just like Jr said he didn’t want NASCAR to retire the
#3 in case another driver comes along and wants to race the #3 because his dad raced 3.
Ralph Earnhardt (Jr’s grandpappy) raced the #8, how low could Teresa go if she took that away from him.
Jr’s fight for the 8 is about his family I hope, why should he even have to “offer” something for?
Come on DEI, have some heart!!!

Junior said he wants to make these decisions once…

You guys are goingto hate me for saying this, but, Nascar is so big….none of that family stuff is gonna mater anymore. This has become BIG BUSINESS.

That’s the downside of the enormous growth Nascar has acheived.

  6. 6 Andrew

    Free the 8!

  7. 7 Uncle Clem

At hwat point do we attach a number to a particular person? People raced the #3 and the #8 before Sr and dufus raced them….how about those dear people?

Always remember, you can change dufus’s number, but, you can’t change dufus.

  8. 8 Robert

This is for the what does a number have to do with it comment. The #8 is not just a number
for Dale Jr. That was his grandfathers number when he raced!!

  9. 9 Brujah

I hope he can get the 8..

If not, 81 isn’t bad either..

And Uncle Clem, shut the hell up. You and anonymous are

the most immature people on these threads.

  10. 10 mary

Good Lord people if Sr was still alive non of this would be happening. Shame on Teresa
for not releasing the 8. Us Earnhardt fans should march up to DEI and put her in her
place. I totally agree with Brujah. Uncle Clem why are you even on here, this has everything
to do with Earnhardts, you call him dufus so why are you even reading about him. Who put
Nascar on the map. I think it was Dale Sr.!!! So Clem just stop reading anything that has to
do with JR. and keep your thoughts to yourself!!!!

  11. 11 THE BIG MCNIZZLE

i think jr should be able to take the #8 with him after all it has alt of histiry with in the family and does nebody know of any prospective sponsors for jr

  12. 12 JR/HENDRICK FAN

now i do have to say this, anonymous’s last post actually made a lot of sense, he hit it str8 on for that comment, nascar doesn’t care about family business anymore, brian france is an idiot, and nascar has become big business

  13. 13 Sam

Ummm..what? nonoymous, you are so funny!! At least uncle clem has a name. What is wrong with wanting to keep a number? Jr is selling a package to sponsers and his fans see the number 8 as his. It is good for JR, nascar and DEI. I would feel sorry for the person who drove the 8, if that person is not JR.

unfortunaltely you guys are right, the sport has gotten so big its not about family as much anymore. Brian france is ruining nascar with his fines over this and suspensions over that, im only 22 years old but i remember watching the races back in the late 80s and if you watched a race and there WASNT a fight something was wrong, now adays you gotta go talk to someone oveunfortunaltely you guys are right, the sport has gotten so big its not about family as much anymore. 15. 15 nascarsbest8

wellthe only driver that would be OK
in the #8 would be mark marin
    he would be protected

and i think jr.nation would be OK with that
AND JR. WOULD BE OK WITH THAT AS MY SELF

  16. 16 Anonymous

You all quit tattoo’ing the damn numbers on your forehead and it wouldn’t freakin’ matter….it’s the driver, how he drives and what kind of person he is……….the numbers are just a scorecard.

JR will be JR no matter what!

If what you say is true and SR put Nascar on the map…he could change numbers every year and his fans would just buy new hats and shirts. They would have never stopped cheering for him.

  17. 17 sicko4stewart

If you think of #43 , you dont think of Bobby laBonte , John Andretti or even Bobby Hamilton…you think of Richard Petty…thats how a number and a driver can be connected that strongly.

  18. 18 chevy_chica

NASCAR’s opinion doesn’t matter anyway, they don’t give a rats butt who has what #, I AM SAYING TERESA SHOULD GIVE IT UP FOR THOSE REASONS>
You are right NASCAR has no say, nobody was saying NASCAR did. We are talking about DEI giving it up here.

  19. 19 CHUCK

I have been watching racing sence 1956 when Ralph Earnhart drove the #8 at the old cola,sc speed track,, Richard Petty, Fireball Roberts, Tinny Lung, and all the old driver was racing, That was when racing was racing now Nascar is going to blow it with all there fine and taking points for ever little thing that the driver say.

I think that D E I should give DALE JR the #8 for family reason if she does not she is crazy the number is not going to help her Dale Jr. was where the money was
    coming from not the number.

  20. 20 Andy

    I agree with Sicko4Stewart.

  21. 21 Andy

Look, the 8 means alot to him just like the 3 means alot to RCR and those guys. More importantly, Jr wants the number for the fans, He sees all theese petitions and free the 8 gear people wear and signs. It really says something. And he said he would drive the 81 that way his fans just had to add a 1 to there tatoos!!!

  22. 22 Andy

Ideally, I’d like to see him keep the 8, but if not, I’ll take the 81.

  23. 23 Guy

^ Not to get off topic, but WHY does automatically use the name of the last person to post? That was me, not andy. Sorry folks.

  24. 24 Anonymous

    Free the automatic name inserter!

  25. 25 gigolo george

Most of you are making a lot of sense. NASCAR usually stresses family and family values when it either affects the honchos that run it or they need to make money with some kind of promotion. Don’t be fooled!!
