Dale Earnhardt, JrAs the laps wound down in last night’s Chevy Rock and Roll 400, Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced side by side with Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon and had a shot at winning the race until - in news familiar to his fans - the No. 8 car blew its engine.

“We broke another motor, and they seem to fall apart when they plug ‘em into my car,” said Earnhardt Jr., who finished 30th. “It’s just really frustrating. I’ll get over it, but my guys work hard all weekend, and to see that thing go up in smoke like that, they’re very disappointed.”

“We ain’t in the Chase - we deserve to be in the Chase,” he said. “I wish we were for my fans. But we’ll give them something to cheer about. We race hard. We don’t quit. We love racing - that’s what we do. … These dang motors.”

I AM CRYING, I AM SO UPSET RIGHT NOW!!! I REALLY FEEL JR.’S PAIN!!! WE WILL STILL BE BEHIND HIM NO MATTER WHAT!!!

  2. 2 Green Sprout

I hated to see JR loose an engine. He was running so good. Even though he didn’t make the chase he will do OK for the rest of the season. Lets hope he can win a race or 2.

  3. 3 kk

Another engine…and people wonder WHY he’s leaving DEI

And then, with six laps remaining and Earnhardt running third, came the unfortunate exclamation point. “[Bleeping]-A,” came the cry from the driver’s seat. That old bugaboo, engine failure, had arrived to manifest itself again. Crewmen tossed red mechanic’s gloves to the ground. Eury climbed off the pit box, stripped away his radio headset, and walked solemnly toward the garage. The final result was a 30th-place finish that left Earnhardt 198 points shy of the Chase. A lone solace: the margin was larger than the 100-point penalty the team incurred for mounting wing brackets illegally at Darlington.

Why is everyone making such a big deal about Jr? Was there this much talk and craze about Tony not making it? They didn’t follow Tony’s car around the entire race last year and talk about him constantly. That pissed me off; there’s 42 other cars on the track and action going on up front, and the announcers are only worried about Jr. OKAY he didn’t make the chase! Big deal! Everyone knows cheatin’ chad, assface hendrick and leTART will make sure he gets in [even if they have to cheat..cough cough]. But to follow Jr’s car around ALL during the race and make him the topic of the night? That’s something I don’t understand. It’s not like he’s winning races week in and week out.
Jr fans go ahead and YELL, but i’m right.

  9. 9 Nascar Headquaters

I’m such an idiot for saying that when all of you all are grieving. I understand everybody’s pain and I’m sorry. I’m such a loser that cant do nothing right

  10. 10 Jeff

you know….I’m a jr fan but i wonder if he’s flat out overdriving the car?

  11. 11 Nascar Kacey

I agree with Amanda! There has been way too much focus on Jr this season. Why? He hasn’t been winning, there is just a lot of drama! This is NASCAR, not a soap opera, however the press seems to be making it more of a soap opera by their reporting.

  12. 12 Anonymous

And let’s not forget Amanda, they were worried about someone 800 points out of 1st place.

Your post is right on the money.

  15. 15 Jeff

LMAO… That was a fitting end to Jr’s cruddy run at making the chase. Now maybe they can STFU about him and get on with talking about some freaking contenders!

  16. 16 Carly

People who say he can’t race are crazy! Look at how well he raced last night and in many other races this season. But something always freakin’ happens!! I can’t wait until next season with Hendrick. He’ll have everything he needs to win, and go for the championship. He already has the skills he just needs much better equipment and he’ll have the best! Go Jr!!

  17. 17 gkirb2

Inless your a total idiot, it is easy to see that he has been driving far beond what his equipment is good enough to do. He has carried that car on his ability to drive because the cars have for the most part been junk. He’ll be fine next year.

  18. 18 cheater

Now, what if Jr. wins three or four races in the final ten chase races???The chase really sucks….. BY THE WAY Where were the TOYOTAS……….Not even in the top Ten….OH WELL………..

anonymous made a great point as well. truex hasn’t had that many engine failures as him. i like jr always have and i was a big fan of his dad as well but i think its plain to see jr is runnin the S*it out of that car. for the people that think he’s gonna have better equipment at hendrick next year….dont look at it this way, engines are gonna come apart no matter who builds them dei, hendrick, ryr, just anybody to be totally honest about it. when u run something beyond the limits constantly and constantly…something’s gotta give. last nite was a great example of that. overdriving the car

  20. 20 JR/HENDRICK FAN

hey amanda, the reason for not talking about stewart last year is because he didn’t have a chance to make the chase, whereas jr did this year…so there ya go

  21. 21 Metta

Jr has proved himself worthy, Heck he was up there racing side by side with 2 of the
best last night.. driving so hard to try and make it to the chase to please his Team
and his fans, that his car blew up :(.. Thats Passion, he is doing what he loves to do.
Thats racing, He will be Awesome next year.. Go Jr!!!!!

  22. 22 Metta

PS, I do seem to remember Harvick and Bucsh getting alot of talk last night.. cause
They had to finish well too.. I also remember Them talking about stewart not making the
chase last year, now why would they bring up something from last year?

Did anyone else have issues with ABC’s Audio?

  23. 23 RG

I hate to tell jeff and anonymous that those motors are built so you cant overdrive the engine unless you have a backwards shift ie 3-2 when your trying to go 3-4, jr is one of the best at shifting and pitstops and all that so I dont believe thats been the case 6 times this year, Jr was running around 9000 rpms max the whole night, and richmond your off the gas 50% of the time, something else is going on, It appears that it is something like he is burning up a main of rod bearing and then just throwing out something in the engine, its not like a valvespring where you can feel that cylinder lose power and still drive for 5-10 more laps. With the rev limiters, redundant ignitions, and all this stuff they have to keep this from happening it makes me as someone who builds my own race cars and engines think that this is more than coincidince. Like I said this isnt some 4 cylinder from a chevy cobalt, these motors are made to be run hard and if you stay below 10k and dont bounce it off the rev limiter(which telemetry tells us he wasnt doing) there is something internally wrong with there engines.

Uh…were you watching the same NASCAR series I was? Because Tony had more of a chance to get in the chase last year than Jr had this year.. Tony was mostly consistant last year while Jr has countless engine troubles, tires blowing, etc..
If you look at Jr’s stats from the past races this year, you’ll see he hasn’t been doing too well.. oh..oh..what’s that? Oh, you don’t believe me? Well here ya go…i’ll post them for you buddy.

hey amanda, your forgetting one thing about tony stewert, he may not have a ride next year, lmao, his team is going to toyota and his contract with home depot states that he must drive for chevy to keep his sponsers, and he has also made a statement he might not return next season if he was forced to drive a toyota, toyota has been a crappy car and you dont see any of those cars in the chase DO YA!!!
and also dont forget it has been tony stewert who has been fined more times this year and has been put on probation for his MOUTH OF THE SOUTH for accusing nascar for fixing races. and those are serious aligations for some one who cheated last night bump drafting Jr to get him loose, so before you start getting your panties all wet about your driver look at the stats more better, he is in more danger of losing his ride next season then JR, and no hendricks team is not a loser, your just
freaken jellious that they have better motors then stewerts team and thats why every one is trying to be like hendricks

Don’t mess with me when it comes to stats. Tony had everything in place to be qualified enough to make it into the chase last year. His run during the one race that set the chase was bad, and it caused him to miss getting a set spot in the top 10.

i dont know who you are nascar, but i know you dont work for them, because nascar has never made that statement, nor has that subject ever come up, i work for nascar as a reporter and i have never even heard this from the head office it,s self what you are reporting is considered BLASTAMY and you can get in to a hell of alot of trouble for making faulse reports like this.

  31. 31 robin

hmm I actually thought that last year they was making a pretty big deal about Tony Stewart not making it in the chase. And especially after he did really awesome those last 10 races even though he didnt have a chance of winning the cup anymore. I think everyone is making a big deal about Jr is because he is a great driver but these engine problems are just pathetic. I even said that last night when his engine blew…its just sad and pathetic how many times this has happened. And yeah, maybe he gets all this publicity because of his last name, but can he help that? He cant change who his dad is. And a lot of fans like him cause hes a cool guy, down to earth. And everytime he talks his words dont sound rehearsed like some drivers :) Not every single driver is popular JUST for being a good racecar driver, if that was true, every fan in nascar would love Jimmie Johnson because he does so well.

I just wonder where Jr would be in points if it wasnt for all these engine problems, hopefully he’ll get the Cup next year.

  32. 32 michael

AMANDA i was not talking about last years stats, DUHHH, i am talking about htis year and tony may not having a ride for next year to where jr
will and will be kicking ass, every one knows that tony is a BITCH, and thats why he dont have fans like jr dose and probily wont have a ride next year.

  33. 33 Amanda

    First off, you spelled his last name wrong. S T E W A R T.
Second, Bob is right, if we simply looked at Jr’s stats, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If his last name wasn’t Earnhardt, he would be simply some driver like Kasey Kahne who performs well once in a blue moon. Just because his dad was an amazing driver doesn’t mean Jr is too. Jr fans can jump on me and boohoo all they want, but i’m right, and anybody who looks at him from an outside view [meaning they arn't a diehard Jr fan]can see what i’m talking about. All the Jr fans freak out and jump on everybody’s back when he does bad at a race [which is nothing new] or when another driver roughs him up.
And about the penalties Tony has received this season… he still managed to stay locked into the chase after he had points taken away, so shove your stubbornness up your ass and stop trying to turn the subject around.
But GO AHEAD JR FANS.. freak out on me and start saying that Toyota isn’t going to be a factor next year..

And if you followed NASCAR, Michael, you would have known that Tony is going with JGR over to Toyota next year and Chevy has already let him go. After a week of people discussing this decision, I would have thought you would have known that Home Depot is still sponsoring Tony and Chevy is still helping his sprint cars. Don’t talk out of your ass.

  34. 34 Amanda

HAHA, Oh yeah, you’re REALLY a NASCAR reporter. You can’t even spell easy words and your grammar sucks.

Busch says Gibbs move to Toyota in ‘08 is a done deal
    By michael hill, for NASCAR
    August 31, 2007
    10:05 PM EDT

FONTANA, Calif. — Tony Stewart received a telephone call recently asking him to be at the Joe Gibbs Racing shop on Wednesday morning, in preparation for a noon announcement. His future teammate Kyle Busch gave everyone an idea of what that announcement will be about.

Busch said Friday at California Speedway that team officials have told him the organization’s long-awaited move from Chevrolet to Toyota is official. “They finally made their decision, and they called me,” said the current Hendrick Motorsports driver, who is moving into Gibbs’ No. 18 car next season.

A Gibbs spokesman was adamant Friday that no deal had been signed between the Gibbs team and the Japanese carmaker, which has struggled mightily in its first season on NASCAR’s premier circuit. But the marriage seemed a foregone conclusion inside the Nextel Cup garage area, especially after Busch essentially confirmed it.

“I feel fine with it,” he said. “I think it’s something that’s going to take Joe Gibbs Racing a step forward in the right direction. They have a great reputation for being able to produce winning racecars year in and year out, and championship teams. I think they’re going to be just fine. This is a business decision that they felt was right. I guess now I have to talk to Five Star Race Bodies to make me a late model that’s a Camry.”

Toyota’s move into Nextel Cup has been fraught with difficulty, beginning even before the season-opening Daytona 500 when Michael Waltrip’s team was busted for an illegal fuel additive. While there have been a few bright spots — Dave Blaney’s pole at New Hampshire and Brian Vickers’ fifth-place finish at Charlotte foremost among them — the manufacturer’s first season in Cup has been defined by struggles just to make races on Friday.

Enter the Gibbs program, which has won three of the last seven Cup-level championships, and will place two drivers in the season-ending Chase for the Nextel Cup.

“They’re a strong, strong company, Gibbs is,” Chevy driver Jimmie Johnson said. “I think Toyota’s commitment to the sport, and what they’re willing to do to get competitive and compete for race wins and championships, will force all the other manufacturers to spend more money. It will force all the other teams to get more money to be able to compete. I think [Gibbs] may have some type of learning curve if they do go, but it would be great for Toyota and terrible for Chevrolet for us to lose those guys. That combination together, I would think, over a period of time, would be very, very tough to beat.”

Stewart and Denny Hamlin weren’t quite as forthcoming as their future teammate. “I’ve got a feeling some big stuff is going to happen,” Stewart said of Wednesday’s expected announcement. Hamlin toed the line: “I’m to say we’re going to be with Chevrolet next year,” he said. “It’s definitely a possibility.”

So is the chance of Gibbs taking a competitive step back in its first season under the Toyota banner. For a Gibbs car to make the Chase next year in a Camry, it would require a dramatic leap in performance. The highest-ranking Toyota driver this year is Blaney, who sits 33rd in points.

“They’re a strong organization, a strong team, good drivers,” Chevy driver Jeff Gordon said. “I think that would be a good move for Toyota, and it could possibly work out well for Gibbs too, we’ll just have to see. Everybody talks about the engineering and the technology Toyota can bring, yet they haven’t seen the results so far this year. You put them with a top organization like Gibbs, and I think they’ll finally start seeing the results they’re looking for. But is that going to take Gibbs to the next level, or hold them back is probably the real question.”

Busch cites the carmaker’s strides in North American open-wheel series and the Craftsman Truck circuit as proof that it can be done. Hamlin said any move would be about positioning the Gibbs team for long-term success.

“What’s dominant now, is it going to be dominant down the road? That’s an option everyone’s looking at, what’s going to be good five or six years down the road?” said Hamlin, who added that Gibbs is still working on extending his contract, to bring it in line with that of car sponsor FedEx. “I think that’s why there tend to be people looking around for different options. Stewert stated We’ve got a great relationship with Chevrolet. We’ve always had a great relationship with Chevrolet, and I couldn’t be prouder to be with them. If there’s no change at all, I won’t be happy.”

But all indications are there will be a change, and one of NASCAR’s top organizations will be tasked with bringing its newest manufacturer up to a more competitive level. Kurt Busch, who moved from a Ford team to a Dodge outfit two years ago, can relate to some of what his little brother is about to go through.

“I wish them all the luck,” he said. “It’s different, I think, with the way the fans have’nt absorbed Toyota. But when you look at the bottom-line numbers, I think they’re the No. 2 auto manufacturer as far as sales in the U.S. But They Don’t deserve to be in our sport, as stated in Tony
    stewerts radio show on SIRUIS.

Rule Rivision: where ever JR finishes, we will include at least that many spots in the chase….just in case.

  38. 38 blastamy

Even if the motor didn’t blow up, he would have missed the chase anyway.

If Jr does better next season it wont have anything to do with his ability,,,its just because Mr. Hendrick keeps Mike helton and the Frances in his back pocket. JR fans need to wake up and realize he will never be as good as his daddy. Stop judging him by his name and judge him by what he has accomplished. Which is not much at all!

Bob is right, every one needs to leave Dale Jr alone and quit trying to make him out to be his Daddy, because he is not, as Dale Jr stated before ” i want to make my own legacy and not live my Dads.”

Next year to ‘assist’ with marketing we will be expanding the Chase format to the top 15 due to circumstances beyond our control.

i dont know who you are nascar, but i know you dont work for them, because nascar has never made that statement, nor has that subject ever come up, i work for nascar as a reporter and i have never even heard this from the head office it,s self what you are reporting is considered BLASTAMY and you can get in to a hell of alot of trouble for making faulse reports like this.

ROTF… You work for NASCAR as a reporter? Who do you report for? Whoever it is, I would suggest they invest in the best editors in the business:

    A) you don’t know how to use proper capitalization
    B) can’t avoid run-on sentences and comma splices
    C) it,s self -> itself?
    D) don’t know how to spell BLASPHEMY
    E) By the way, blasphemy is the defamation of a God, not whatever you thought it was, unless you worship the NASCAR HQ and think that they defamed it’s “good name”
    F) alot -> a lot? Two words.
    G) faulse -> false?

Dale only started to do poorly AFTER he announced he’s leaving. Up till then he was firmly in the top 12! I wonder if the higher ups in DEI were doing things to his car to make him do worse. (things that i’ve heard) But dale Jr. a great driver and his equpment is junk! he was running with JJ and stewart untill his motor ran out. you don’t see hendrick, Gibbs, Childress equpment doing that .so JR’s got the skill, but the kinda crap that he has for equpment wont let him go anywhere!

I bet Teresa goes into the shop at night and loosens some of the bolts up on the motor. That would explain a lot, especially with Truex in the #7 spot in the chase.

While Tony JR and JR are out back behind the barn playing ’stinky and pokey’…Teresa is getting her revenge!

  46. 46 Jeff

Anon, are you suggesting that Teresa actually set foot in the shop? I could understand it if she was going in to collect her royalty checks for her cut of the #8 merchandise or something, but I don’t see her going there for anything racing related!!!

  47. 47 Matt

Amanda your stats are a bit off. Very close but 1 race.
    18 Pepsi 400 13 36 2040 12 134/160 $128,283 Running— JR Blew up at this race to.
I dont know if ya’ll caught it but he said they cant seem to put the engine together right in his car. They are giving him the crap of the equiptment and have been since he ticked off Teresa. The reason he slowed at both Bristol and California is because his engines started to miss. I was listening to the in-car audio in both events. His failure to make the chase wasnt due to lack of talent, but more like lack of equiptment. DEI messed with his engines qas in they didnt install them right.

  48. 48 JR/HENDRICK FAN

Yea matt that was the first thing i noticed in his interview about him saying in his car, the other interesting fact is that he has had more engine failures this year than he has had since he started in Cup

  49. 49 Amanda

Sorry Matt…stats came from nascar.com… GRR @ THEM! haha

Congrats Michael on being able to copy and paste :D you are one step closer to becoming a fraud master! HIYOO!

  50. 50 JR/HENDRICK FAN

i missed the Pepsi 400 but wasn’t dale jr in a crash with reed sorenson also

You all act like he’’s your friend or child or something. The guy doesnt even like fans….get a life!

he is running a smaller gear causing higher RPM or over revving his engine.

If someone tampered with the engine it they would blow up pretty fast. they made it though all the practices and qualifying..and made it through almost the entire races they blew.

    commone since? not in here

  52. 52 RG

haha, its called a rev limiter, gear rule, and a dual redundant ignition. I just killed your theory.

  53. 53 RG

also read my earlier post about halfway down about how exactly the engines are failing and you will realize how they are making it thru practice and qualifying and all that and blowing up in the race.

  54. 54 26fan

well jr is not in the chase and the world is still turning gotta have good equip. gotta be consistant i hate to say it but he WAS consistant and he will get a win this year

Just out of curiosity,,,if we went by JRs record and not what his last name was,,,would we still be having all these discussions?

Only a few drives have more wins than JR in the last seven years!

With the gear rules it is very difficult to run the wrong gear.

I have never said he was as good as Dale Sr. He very good but not that good. I judge him only by his wins. 17!
    and his 2 bush titles.

  58. 58 JR/HENDRICK FAN

um haha, have u met dale jr….my guess is no, so u can’t really say he doesn’t care for his fans when i am a fan of his and have met him, much like a whole lot of other people, and my guess would be that they like me disagree with u, i didn’t have a sharpie to get his autograph and he told me to go find one and knock on his trailer door, so maybe u shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
