Mark MartinDespite having missed five races in 2007, Martin is still 18th in the Nextel Cup driver point standings, ahead of 13 drivers who have competed in all 18 events. In addition Martin trails 16th place Greg Biffle by only 65 points.

In addition to his cup duties at Chicagoland, Martin will take place in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at Iowa Speedway on Friday night. Martin will team with Shane Lewis and Randy Ruhlman in the No. 3 Preformed Line Products Lexus-Riley. It will be Martin’s first time in a Daytona Prototype.

“The racing at Chicago has gotten better each year that we’ve gone there. The different grooves are really starting to develop and it’s turning into a pretty good place to race. We should see some solid racing there this year and it’s the kind of track where if you can get your car working right, you can really pass some cars.

“I’m looking forward to going to Chicago this weekend with Ryan (Pemberton) and the No. 01 Team. We are due a good run and I think Chicagoland is just the kind of track for us to break out. I know the guys are still pretty hungry for us to take this U.S. Army Chevy to victory lane and we continue to work towards that. We didn’t have a lot of luck at Daytona, but we were able to fight back there at the end after having a flat tire with just a few laps remaining. This is a pretty resilient race team and it’s always a pleasure to work with these guys.”

Only 15 full time drivers are ahead of a old, part-time driver……hmmmmm.

  2. 2 Justin

Yeah , he is still better than 90 % of the drivers on the track.

anonymous…cant u read it said 18th that means 17 drivers are ahead of him not 15

  4. 4 Anonymous

17 drivers…that’s makes an important difference. Dale Jr. is ONLY 6 spots ahead of him. I sure can read that!

I think it would be FANtastic if “old driver” Mark Martin runs a limited schedule and still makes it in the Chase..
I wonder if he would still stick to his “no full time schedule” rule then.

Dale Jr. is also 266 points ahead of Mark, 366 without the penalty.

Ok, let’s break it down. we will give Dale Jr. his 100 points back and if you divide the total number of points by the races run, it is 118 points per race entered for Dale Jr.(this is without the penalty)

    2140 points Divided by 18 races = 118.8/race

Mark Martin would be at 136 points per race entered……..

    1774 points divided by 13 races = 136.4/race

The numbers don’t lie, Mark Martin is an awesome race car driver. I’m a jr. fan but if I had to pick Mark or Jr to drive my car, I would have to pick Mark. I know some of you will bash me for that but all you need to do is look at his stats. He may not be GQ material but he can still get up on the wheel.

  9. 9 Robin

wow just imagine where he’d be in points if he didnt miss those 5 races.

  10. 10 Billy

Well annoyance I see you are still @ it stirring the poop don’t you have anything to do at that race shop you CLAIM to work at…
Points aside both are very good drivers and I’m sure the #s will change for all as the season goes on. So lets not get to excited yet…

Its just as likely that if Mark had run full time that he wouldn’t have enjoyed some of the high points finishes that he accomplished. Mark is a great driver and Junior has great potential. Kurt Busch who is easily one of the top 5 best drivers in Cup is only 145 points in front of Mark. Big wow. There are still 8 races left till the chase and 18 races total. That is equal to an entire season of open wheel racing, no matter which side of the globe you’re looking at, ahead of us. This is why races are run.

  12. 12 HoppyGirllllllll

Yeah, he was in 1st place before he missed the first one. But you have to respect the fact that he is
doing it exactly how HE wants to do it.

    Sorry Billy….too advanced for ya….

  14. 14 Justin

Ok , while were throwing numbers around , if you add Marks 1774 points to Regan S,iths 409 points (the races Mark skipped) then the 01 car is really in #9 in the points in front of Kevin Harvick and just behind Kyle Busch. AND I’ll bet a large chunk of money that Mark would have had alot more than 409 points if he would have run in those 4 races.

  15. 15 Justin

    OOps , I mean 5 races.

  16. 16 dalejr4life

no sh** he would be ahead of all those drivers…im not saying anything about that mark martin was the first driver who caught my eye when i began watching nascar…but he hasnt run the full schedule and he doesnt have the points so who really cares where he could be

this is obviously where he wants to be or he wouldnt have missed the race when he was leading the points

so y r u worrying about all the ifs/ands/buts he definetly isnt thats y he is where he is and having more fun than he ever did running a full scedule
