2007 Daytona 500The 2007 Daytona 500 will have the latest start time in the race’s history and could lead to the Great American Race finishing under the lights at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR announced a 3:15 p.m. scheduled start time for theDaytona 500, marking the third consecutive year the start time has been pushed back by at least 30 minutes.

DIS Director of Media Relations David Talley said he believes fans will embrace the change, which was made at the request of FOX TV.

“It’s a great opportunity for fans to come out earlier and now have time to experience everything the speedway has to offer,” Talley said. “And (the possibility of finishing under the lights) adds another element to NASCAR’s most prestigious race.”

well i dont care what time they start,i just cant wait to get nascar going again. i love it…go Dale Jr.#8 rules. you can do it this year i just know it

i do, the Daytona 500 is traditonally a day race, not a night race. When does heritage and respect somes before tv ratings. It’s not like they don’t have to avoid the NFL games during the day. this is just another example of NASCAR throwing away tradition just to get more popularity.

I AGREE WITH PHILLIP! AND SOMEBODY NEEDS TO KICK BRIAN FRANCES A**!,HE HAS DONE NOTHING BUT SCREW S*IT UP SINCE HE’S TAKEN OVER!
WHERES LEE ROY MERCER WHEN WE NEED HIM?

  4. 4 Serg

boo hoo NASCAR threw out tradition a long time ago starting with expanding race events to the west and leaving ESPN the first time. Always someone complaining about something. The Daytona 500 was traditionally ran on the beach, complain about that.

well serg your right nascar has been dumping on the people and traditions that made the sport what is was . I think if big E where still here he would be shocked to see what has become of nascar . Daytona and alot of OTHER tracks where dirt. that why I support dirt tracks and local racing . thats good ole fashion racin yee haw

Maybe it’ll get rained out that Sunday and they’ll have to run the race around noon on Monday! The Daytona 500 at night just wont have the same feeling as it once did…

I agree with Phillip and Anonymous. The 500 should be at 1:00 like always, they already have the Pepsi 400 at night. Some people have to go to work at 7 Sunday night, I would like to watch the whole thing and not miss the best part, but knowing my luck it will end like the Talladega race last fall. I guess he thought if you cant beat’em, wreck’em.

The racing at Daytona already is not as good as it used to be so just leave it alone. The 500 is a DAY arce and the 400 is a NIGHT race. When will Brian France understand tradition?

  9. 9 David Hutto

Noone said it was going to be a full night race. It said that it would possibly END under the lights. True it has always been run in total sunlight, its still a race. Its still a time honored tradition. Watch the race, enjoy the race. quit bitchin about it being moved back a few hours.

    Great. The Pepsi 500. Jeez.

“DIS Director of Media Relations David Talley said he believes fans will embrace the change, which was made at the request of FOX TV.”

NASCAR and its daughter companies have really lost their balls.

Give me racing back to the yellow flag back and I will at least be somewhat happier.

  11. 11 Nascar Kacey

I hate when they continue to make changes for the T.V. networks benefit. It isn’t particularly warm in Daytona in February so when the sun goes down, it will be chilly…..Also means my Daytona Pary will run rather late for a Sunday night…..Now I’ll have to take Monday off!

  12. 12 Phillip

The only reason that it is going to be a night race is because of last years race. Last year the Daytona 500 finished under the lights because of the weather. I don’t agree with bringing back racing to the Yellow Flag, unless its the last lap. It has allowed the saftey crews to get to the cars quicker than ever before.
