Dale Jr to use the No 38 in 2008?-UPDATED 5
Quote selected text Published September 10th, 2007 in NASCAR News
UPDATE 5:
Q) Will The Owner Points For The #5 And #25 Stay In Place Where They Are In 2008?
A) Rick Hendrick: “Yes, they’ll stay like they are. Casey will move over to the #5 car and that’s the only that will change there and the number will change on the #25.”
Q) Do You Already Know What Number and Sponsor Dale Jr. will have and can you reveal it?
A) Rick Hendrick: “It’s not going to be the #8. Nor the #25. And the sponsorship, hopefully in the next two weeks we’ll be able to announce that and the number at the same time. We hope that’s going to be probably something with the #8 [such as 81,58,82,38,28] in it but we really don’t even have that locked in right now. That’s a true story.”
—————————————————————
UPDATE 4:
Dale Earnhardt, Jr was interviewed today on ESPN’s ‘Pardon the Interruption’ and was asked what his fans that have the tattoo of his current car number ‘8′ are going to do now that he has to pick a new number for next year. Earnhardt, Jr’s reply (to his fans) was to ’sit tight’ and that they would probably be ‘adding something’ to reflect the change. Jr has most likely decided on the number ‘81′. The number ‘38′ is taken by Yates Racing (and they are not interested in parting with it) and ‘83′ and ‘18′ are also taken. Dale Jr has expressed an interest in the number ‘81′.
—————————————————————-
UPDATE 3:
A decision is supposed to be made this weekend on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s number and sponsor next year, but Earnhardt Jr. wouldn’t speculate Friday on specifics.
“When we announce the number, it will be the same day we announce the sponsor,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “That will be in a press conference, not standing on pit road after qualifying.”
Earnhardt, Jr. said all the speculation on the number is really not important compared to the teams’ announcement on their sponsor.
“I do have one or two [numbers] that are really on the top of the list. I don’t think there’s a reason to make a big deal out of it.”
The bigger deal, he said, is the sponsor and how the car will look.
“The attention placed on [the number] this point is a little over the top,” Earnhardt Jr. said.
—————————————————————
UPDATE 2:
Doug Yates confirmed his team has been approached by a representative of Hendrick Motorsports about securing the No. 38 for Dale Earnhardt Jr. next year, but if Yates gets his way, there will be no such transfer.
Earnhardt recently was denied the opportunity to take the No. 8 from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to Hendrick and now is considering other number options. The No. 38 currently is being used by David Gilliland.
“Dale Jr., since he can’t have what he wants, he might want the 38,” said Yates, president Yates/Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. “They’re asking for the 38, and the 38 and 88 are our numbers. It’s almost a little strange. It’s like somebody asking if they can take your girlfriend or your wife out. We feel we’re going to have the 38 and 88 [next year].”
While Yates said he is not interested in parting with the number, doesn’t everything in the sport have a price tag?
“That’s my dad’s side of it,” Yates said, referring to his father, Robert Yates. “But for me, these are our numbers, and we’re set with them.”
————————————————————–
UPDATE:
Hendrick Motorsports has applied to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for potential use of five numbers next season for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The numbers under consideration are #38, #51, #81, #82 and #58. Filing with Patent and Trademark Office does not guarantee NASCAR approval to use any of those numbers, but does prevent an outside party from trademarking the specific font and graphic package used by Hendrick on its racecars, diecast collectibles and souvenirs. Hendrick filed for the #81 on July 25th, with the most recent filing being for the #38 on August 9th. There have been reports that Hendrick is attempting to strike a deal with Robert Yates Racing for the #38 next season, but my [Dave Moody] sources tell me that the deal is not likely to happen.
—————————————————————-
Reports are that Newman/Haas/Lanigan/Yates Racing has said it is willing to give up the No. 38 to Hendrick Motorsports to use.
The #3 from his father plus the #8 that he ran for DEI - put them side-by-side and you get #38. So although Dale Jr. had said he might like to try the #81, #38 appears to be what he will use.

38…. At first I was like WHY IS IT SO RANDOM?!
Put that is true. I really don’t think he needs his father’s
number in it though. I say stick with 81. But whatever
works for him works for me
I think that it is a great idea. I always thought Dale should be driving his dad’s number. I feel he should of been able to keep the number 8 as it was in the family before Teresa got involved.
Well since we know he can’t keep the 8, and in my opinion and he’s stated that the 3 just doesn’t fit him at the moment. He said maybe he’d use it at the end of his career. The 38 is a great fit. I hope it works out, if not I think the next best thing is the 81.
its just another stupid rumor people..why waste ur time worry and pondering over what number he will have..when HENDRICK announces it we will all know its just stupid rumors..hes already said he dont want 3 so i assume that means a 3 PERIOD..
38 is a great idea
I think that would be a Great Number for Dale Jr. to use. Using both numbers would be so awesome. Using the Number 3 would be honoring his Dad. I hope he does use the #38.
I love the idea of the 38 because he’s always seemed so proud of his family history and in the 38 he can be paying respect to both his father and his grandfather.
Mmmmmmmmm…the big JR news is he’s not going to be in the chase folks.
A number is just a number.
theresa would you like to make a little bet$$$??? the 38 would be cool. i just think of alot of other drivers who had it befor. can any one name more than the last three people to have it? i want to see how many short term fans dont know, cause i know it!
I think it’s great. Glad to see both numbers
Dale Sr.’s number is 3.. not 38. And this is just another rumor folks.. we’ll hear this from him not them.
If Jr don’t use #38, does anyone have #83? If not, why not use #83?
Red Bull Racing has the rights of the number 83 for AJ Allmendinger.
#3….Dale Sr.
#8….Ralph…Jrs G.dad
thus #38= very good combo.
its 83 for BRIAN VICKERS not ALLMENDINGER..hes in the 84..this place just goes to show u people dont know jack bout racing..just shut up and stop talking bout it
Darrel. Grow up. No one cares.
I just don’t understand why Dale Jr said he wanted to be out of his
dad’s shadow and didn’t want the 3 or anything so 38 is the same thing
in my opinion.
That’s why I think he should stick with 81.
I THINK HE MADE A GOOD CHOICE GREAT IDEA JUST ANOTHER WAY TO STICK IT TO HIS STEP MOM
I am a Dale Jr. fan and I don’t care about a number,if it makes him happy I am satisfied. I just want him to hit them in the a** never let off the gas till he rolls into victory lane.
Regardless of what number he uses…..he will still s*ck.
All I want is Dale to be happy. That’s what counts for me. ROCK THE HOUSE DALE
I forgot nonymous, how many races have you won?
WELL I heard that Jr and Teresa have developed some diabolical plot to infiltrate HMS from within. All the while, they are secretly contuining a semi-incestuous passionate love affair which is producing six or seven little Juniors - genetically-engineered by a research team from Honda Racing Engines - who will all one day be future DEI/JR Motorsport/HMS drivers and dominate the NASCAR world as we know it. In exchange for undisclosed funds and licensing agreements, all numbers containing a “3″ or “8″ will belong to Teresa, Junior, and their little empire of super cyborg drivers.
That’s what I heard.
To my dearest Sam,

She no say nothing about winning races……ok?
I wish they would Just get him a # and get it over with.. I’m tired of waiting..
Jr is gonna do great things next season. He has already proven he has talent..
He has Just been through some Unfortunate situations with faulty equipment.. top 5
last weekend.. He’ll do good.. Just wait.. Thats all have a nice week..
too all of those who doesnt know. JR said he wouldnt be comfortable
driving the #3 from RCR. the #3 in honor of his dad and the #8 to continue
the earnhardt legacy and also JR wanted a # with the 8 in it. he even stated
that he knew he wasnt going to get the #8 when he left dei. he knew that for
a long time. so this wasnt new to him that he couldnt have the #8.
I love Jr. and will continue supporting him no matter what number he has!
Dear nonoymous, I have not slurred you, no profanity, inappropriate comments, nor have I attacked you.
You on the other hand have attacked Jr. Let me remind you that you said he “s..ks”. You are negative
toward nascar and its fans. You have on more than one occassion called us names. Drivers from all
forms of racing are comming to nascar and you have a hard time with that fact. If you hate nascar
so much then please keep your comments to the F1 blog. Jr is the most popular driver in nascar
and he is taking the biggest risk he has ever taken. He will win or loose and then we will all know
how much talent he has.
I forgot nonymous, how many races have you won? How is this harmful?
You love to slam drivers who have won at the highest level of racing.
Why are you the expert?
HEY EVERYBODY!! More breaking Junior news coming into the news desk! Junior took a poop today! Anybody want to fill a forum about it? Wait and we’re getting late word in that it’s all Teresa’s fault. You heard it here first!!
Last I heard Robert Yates had the rights to 38. So I would call this rumor busted.
Scratch my last comment I somehow missed the part of Yates willing to let it go.
Remember he said it would be a number in the 80’s not 30’s
I think that Jr. should get numer 0. That way his number can match his talent level.
Luke; Why don’t you change your handle to “0.00″ that way it will match your academic level. Oh and I am being respectful in saying that…
Jr. can have what ever # is available or what Mr. Hendrick wants him to have.
How important is a number anyway?? It means nothing, Fans get excited over a driver that can come from the back and pass 30 cars to get to the lead. They cheer the driver not the car #.
Now if your are talking about $$ thats a different story. Marketing a car # is BIG business and and JR is #1 in that department.. Soo what ever # arrangement is decided on he will make $$ on it and his fans will cheer for him.
i think zero is a good choose it is a number his grandfather used to run on dirt tracks as well as the 8 and with that he could still run something to do with his family past i also like the 888 they are into the 3 hundreds in busch allreadythe 888 would be awesone and the zero is not used on nextel level if it was the 888 the tattoos would be easy to fix
I dont care what number junior has i just want to see who does better in points next year….Junior or Kyle
The #38 is a great number for JR,… he would be honoring his Dad and his Grandpa,… and all of us true JR fans know that he is all about honor! JR is a great driver, and a great person! He deserves only the best and I feel Hendrick will give him the quality he needs to be the best!
As far as the number,… no matter what number he chooses, his fans will follow. It’s the driver they want, not the number!
JR, YOU ARE THE MAN! Can’t wait to see you open up and spread your wings!
mike… 888 is retarded..
Announcers will have nightmares with it.
The twenty four, fourty eight, and eight hundred eighty eight hook up at Daytona!
No.
As for the history of the #38, the number came alive in 2003. The #28 was replaced with #38 and Elliot Sadler was the first driver. He drove it until 2006, now David Gillilan is in the drivers seat..
Sam,
The highest level of racing is far from Nascar.
This is something where people can express their opinion, whether they speeell it right or not.
If you do not approve, you need not show up. I understand that race fans with limited knowledge have other limitations as well, so , I am here to helllp.
I am expressing my opinion as well. If you do not like it then you do not need to read them. If you are going to be critacal of the most popular driver in nascar or any other motorsport for that matter then you will get responses that may not be to your likeing. To you the highest level of racing may not be nascar, but to the majority of race fans in the USA it is. F1, cart, IRL, or whaterver you think is best simply does not at track the same following. As I have stated in previous post, I do watch other forms of racing. I personaly do not enjoy watching a computerized car run around the track. If nascar is so bad then why do drivers from other forms of racing want to give nascar a try?
If you want to have a debate that is fine but talking down to me or any other fan is not a spell approiate. Some of us may not spell as well as you but that does not make you BETTER THAN US. I Tend to write with some emotion at times and when i do i make mistakes on a grander scale. SO WHAT!! We are all allowed to make our point just as you do.
How are you helping?
Drivers come to Nascar for the money.
Here, I will help you…..use spellcheck.
I love the responses I get from my posts…..keep them coming.
I like #08
0=Cup Championships won.
8=his old number.
Wow, thanks nonoymous I did not know this blog had spellcheck!!!
I forgot nonoymous, how many wins do you have?
is that 0? I thought so!
I BELIEVE THAT JUNIOR WOULD GREAT IN THE NO.83!! IT IS THE SAME NUMBER THAT KERRY RUN UNDER!!
Any browser can have spellcheck.
I think ‘0′ may represent someones IQ.
(now is when I go up to the spellcheck feature on my browser and use it-it says no spelling errors are identified)
Hey nonymous,
Is that “0″ for the number of wins that you have as well?
he needs # 83 on his car
Yeah! I dan’t think that the #38 would be a good idea because if they are looking at it as his dad’s #3 and his old #8 it would be like saying he is as good as his dad. Don’t take that the wrong way I am a huge Jr. fan but I think it would be an insult to compare them two like that because they are two very differnt drivers. I personally think the #81 is the number for him.
why not #08
Hey Anonymous,
Does your so called “SPELLCHECK” use grammer as well??? Cause you sure don’t!
It’s not necessarily an insult Renee. It’s more of his way of
honoring him. But he said he wants to get out of his father’s shadow,
and having the 3 in his number is like walking right back into it.
I think 81 is a great choice.
I wonder how the 51 & 58 came up?
38 would be cool, but lets stop dragging it out! im ready to know what his number is going to be already!!! But like its been said before, it doesnt really matter what number he has, his true fans will go with it no matter what.
Oh and guys, lets not act hardcore on the keyboard, its silly.
so anonymous if you dont think that NEXTEL CUP is the best series out there then what it? last time i checked everyone wants to make it that high. People dont dream of going to the nextel cup series because of the money, its because of the amount of talent that’s there. im sure you dont know anything about that tho because you’ve been proving that you arent the most talented person in the world because you waste you time trying to bring down Jr. fans. im not a jr fan but i dont get pleasure out of trying to make other people feel bad for who they root for!
i think its great. the 3 and the 8 combined.it also ties better to the 24,48 numbers.i just hope they put casey in the 5 instead of 25.
I like 38 the best, 83 is 2nd, dont like 51 or 58 at all.
The #83 is already taken by Vickers..
Grammer and Nascar do not go together….nice try though.
number 38 is a stupid number, number 83 is a stupid number, so lets settle this…..81 = great number
by the way,Anonymous, you wrote on Aug 30th, 2007 at 9:08 am
“Any browser can have spellcheck.

now. here’s where i correct you. “Someones” is ACTUALLY “someone’s”, as it is showing possession in the singular form. so, while “someones” is a real word, its still incorrect. i win, you lose!
Again, Anonymous, you are wrong…. on Aug 30th, 2007 at 1:59 pm,
you wrote “Grammer and Nascar do not go together….nice try though.”
Before, you were correcting people’s spelling. you should have used spell check this time, because you spelled “grammer” wrong. its “grammar”. i win! AGAIN!
How did we all go from discussing Dale Jr’s number change to English class?
sorry, its just that anonymous bugs. no idea why he posts in here.
Yeah let’s get back to the topic please?
BTW, I thought it would be better for all you to call me by my name instead of ‘Editor’.
K
Kenneth, I am sorry for some of my post. That guy/girl does not like our sport and I do not
understand why he post on this blog.
Okay, let’s not go there on people’s g-r-a-m-m-a-r! Before we insult about spellcheck, how about we use one? Alrighty then. Moving on to junior…
it’s only a friggin number! why is there so much drama over a number? Whatever number he puts on the side of his car, everyone is going to have a jacket, a mug, or even a tatoo in his friggin honor!
51 wasn’t that the days of thunder car that movie rocked lol
#38 would be awesome!!! I wouldn’t have to added to or change my tattoo, since it’s already a 3 overlapping an 8!!!!!
Anonymous, does your hate for Dale Jr eat at you that bad every day. I feel for you. I have read your comments and seen your jealous envy of a man that has never done anything to you and yet you despise this man you dont even know. Again, I feel of you.
As for numbers in racing, or any sport, they hold alot of weight. Numbers ar eretired, looked to by many fans as in being, worn, sold, fly on banners, flags, t-shirt, etc and even ride on the sides of stock cars.
Even the hairs of your head are counted in, guess what, a number. Yes, numbers count.
So you can even win or lose a sport by what, a number of seconds or score. Another number………….. Numbers have meaning.
The day you were born has a number and the day you die will have a number.
The world turns on numbers, days, seasons, nights, by numbers, always counting numbers.
So, Anonymous, I hope your driver has a number, or noone will know who they are on the track or off………………………….
And all your days will be counted upon this earth, by what, a number……………………………………….
I just want Dale Jr to be Happy.
I support him in all his racing ventures be it win or lose. He is, in my heart and eyes, the heart of Stock Car Racing. He’s Family,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
#38 looks good in all surounding colrs . i thinkis a great chioce
He should use #69 and come to my house more often.
Dear editor, this seems to be getting out of hand. Each user should register their name, email, etc… I did not post the above comment, but it looks like someone is trying make it look that way. If you would delete that comment I would appreciate it.
Sam
I changed the name for you.
I hope he gets the #81. that’s my preferred number but it really doesn’t matter, I will follow him no matter what. I just hope he gets what he would like to have and he’s happy.
Now I have to buy a new thong with JR’s new sponsor on it.
I like the previous years champion being #1. I have watched local tracks use the numbers 1-10 for the top 10 in points the previous year. I like that, it gives the car numbers a meaning.
When you get right down to it, it shouldn’t be the sponsor or the number the fans like….it should be the driver. The fans should follow that driver regardless of where he goes, what number he has, or what sponsor he has.
I think that Dale should go for the #08 or #83 like previous statements have been made. If I remember correctly, both numbers are open.
Well this is quite the topic.. First off a Number in racing is basically the racers ID. It sets him apart from every other driver on the circut (Spelling may be wrong). Second Jr. doesn need the 38 besides that is a Yates number and should be kept there. He and Hendrick motorsports need to come up with there own number like the 81 or 58 or something random. My guess is the 5 in the 50 numbers is to represent the History HMS has with the #5 in the series. now on to getting Dale a Number. Maybe if he wants to start over leaving the 8 out would help as well. I am a Jr. fan and wanted him to take the 8 but that didnt work. Now we need the number, however we have forgotten something that holds as much or more importance. That is the fact we have 0 clue what his sponsor is, unless i missed the announcement.
ps. I am not the same Matt that posted above.
