Dale Jr merchandise for new team & number already on sale-UPDATE
Quote selected text Published September 21st, 2007 in NASCAR NewsWhen Dale Earnhardt Jr. cracked the tab on that first AMP Energy drink Wednesday in Dallas, traditional retail stores such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart gobbled up 160,000 t-shirts.
Gold mine.
“Right off the gun,” said Joe Mattes, JR Motorsports VP of licensing. “That’s a lot for this sport.”
And Mattes would know. He used to run Dale Earnhardt’s merchandising empire.
In all, 200,000 Dale Jr. No. 88 t-shirts have been ordered for sale.
“It makes sense,” Mattes said. “There’s two sponsors — it’s a double-hit. It’s not like a [typical] guy coming out with a new sponsor. It’s Dale Jr. with two sponsors. His fans have to have one of each.

The Dale Earnhardt Jr. merchandise machine was cranked up as soon as Wednesday’s announcement of new number and sponsors was made at the Dallas Convention Center.
Mark Dyer, president and CEO of Motorsports Authentics, was in Dallas when Earnhardt made it official. His new number will be 88 and Mountain Dew’s Amp Energy drink and the National Guard will serve as primary sponsors in 2008 when he leaves Dale Earnhardt, Inc. for Hendrick Motorsports.
Even before Earnhardt unveiled the new paint schemes, merchandise was already on sale at various online stores. Dyer said he expected sales would be brisk.

- DEI cannot sell the #8 to Hendrick
- Budweiser lets Dale Jr’s new sponsors sell merchandise

If nothing else it would be interesting to see the effect this has on the #8 merchandise for the remainder of the year.
Also, I wonder how it works that they’re selling #88 merchandise, but until the last race the #88 is technically still a RYR number? And even then, RYR is releasing it and NASCAR has to assign it to Jr before it’s his number… It’s really THEIR number until they give it to him (mostly a formality there, I guess). Is RYR getting a cut of the sales or something?
no jeff ryr is not getting a cut in the sales. 2007 will be
like a collectors’ item for the #88 ricky rudd. it will be
the same thing for the #8 merchandise as this is jrs last
season.

I’m sure rick Hendrick is smart enough to make sure NASCAR will let them use the 88 next year before he unvailed the cars yesterday.
I’m also sure that Robert yates new that the Jr. merchandice would go on sale as soon as the anouncement was made.
I would also doubt that RYR is getting a cut of the $ sence Jr. wouldnt Do that with TEI to get the #8. It looks to me like RYR did it as a respectfull good will gesture.
I doubt Rick even had to worry about making sure it was good with NASCAR… If they announced it, and all parties agreed to it, then NASCAR vetoed it, there would be a riot! NASCAR might be stupid, but I doubt they’ll be that stupid.
Robert probably did know it would go on sale right away, which is why I wondered with him technically holding the rights to currently market the #88 if he would want some kind of kickback for them selling merchandise with his car number on it right now, instead of waiting until it was their number. Then again, I agree that this seems to be a goodwill gesture on the part of Robert, so maybe he’s just glad to do what he can to help carry on a family legacy.
It’s just funny because I don’t remember hearing a driver announce a change like this and then seeing stuff on sale immediately. As a matter of fact, a quick glance didn’t turn up any Kyle Busch #18 gear on the NASCAR.com Superstore.
Has anyone on here ordered anything yet? if so when is the projected delivery date? I’m just curious if it will be here before the end of the season.
I ordered a couple of cars from RCCA yesterday, was told to expect them in Feb.

Jeff,
I agree with your post. As far as KB is concerned, I don’t think he has built a big fan base yet. I bet you will see him work harder on that next year as well as giving more credit to his sposers and team.
I heard the clothing etc. delivery was from 3-6 weeks BUT not until
January for die-cast orders.
so if the merchandise was skyrocketing what do you think someone would pay for a polaris predator 500 quad dale earnhardt jr edition?
Can’t you just see TEI stabbing that Jr voodoo doll?

That is how TEI was blowing JR’s motors they had a VOODOO car and at just the right time they would stab the motor. (Just trying to through another wrinkle in that conspiricy theary LOL)
But seriously, I checked a few places out and they were saying 6 - 8 Weeks so that would pretty much put it at the end of the season. I will not were MY new stuff till after the season though out of respect for the JR., Budweiser, #8 legendary combo.
Walmart and Target carry his stuff?
Since when?
I ordered a few shirts from JRM on Monday and the ship date is 9/28/07 so with delivery time I should have it by 10/5/07
Go JR!
Thanks Kenneth for the Registering feature! It’s going to help!
you must not have a good walmart
200,000 shirts?? Wow…that’s some serious cashflow in a day.
200,00 Jr. shirt….they’ll probably sell about 20 Menard or Bass Pro Shop shirts. Brillant move stepmonster.

I agree, Thanks Kenneth!
My buddy has a Dale Jr limited edition Monte Carlo and he is now thinking of just storing it and buy something else to drive. Hopefully they come out with a Mt Dew Impala !!!!
Just order a hat hope it gets here before the 500 next year .lol
FYI : 200,000 sounds like a lot of shirts in one day @ $20 a shirt but when Beckham’s $75 LA galaxy jersey went on sale they sold almost 500,000 in one day.
