Coors LightUPDATE:

Coors Brewing Company and NASCAR today announced a multi-year partnership, making Coors Light the official beer of NASCAR. The five-year sponsorship agreement gives Coors Brewing Company category exclusivity starting with the 2008 NASCAR season.

“We’re proud that Coors Light, the World’s Most Refreshing Beer, is now the official beer of NASCAR – refreshing race fans every weekend from the start of the season to the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup,” said Andy England, Chief Marketing Officer, Coors Brewing Company. “This partnership allows us to deliver exciting and relevant programs to our distributors and retailers – all centered around the number-one spectator sport in the country.”

The sponsorship agreement gives Coors Light exclusive rights to NASCAR logos in advertising, packaging and promotions, as well as the right to brand the Pole Award. In addition, Coors Light will build distributor and consumer promotions giving fans exclusive access to one-of-a-kind NASCAR experiences.

Coors Light will announce Tuesday a $20 million deal over five years to become the official beer of NASCAR starting in January. Coors replaces Anheuser-Busch as the official beer sponsor. The new deal includes renaming the pole award to the Coors Light Pole Award from the Bud Pole Award.

For Coors, the NASCAR deal also replaces its sponsorship of the No. 40 Dodge in the top-tier Nextel Cup Series.

“Our deal was up with those guys and this opportunity came up,” says Andy England, chief marketer for Coors. “It feels like we are elevating our game.”

Gosh it’s gonna be strange to see the Bud Pole go away! Is the Bud Shootout gone too? I guess Anheuser Busch must not be getting much value out of its NASCAR deals… No more Busch series and no more Bud Pole :(

Yes, the Bud Shootout is gone.

So folks, be prepared for the Coors Light Shootout. I hope they drop the “Light” part when saying it, though… like the “Coors Pole Award” instead of the “Coors Light Pole Award”.

ESPN is reporting that the deal actually doesn’t include the shootout…

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The future of the Budweiser Shootout after the 2008 season has yet to be determined with Tuesday’s announcement that Coors Light will be the new official beer of NASCAR.

The Shootout, a season-opening, non-points event between the previous year’s pole winners at Daytona International Speedway, will be run in 2008 under the Budweiser name.

After that it will be up to International Speedway Corporation whether to continue the race with Coors Light or another sponsor.

“Our agreement does not include the Shootout,” said Andrew Giangola, the director of business communications for NASCAR. “That is a separate entitlement with ISC.”

NASCAR’s five-year, $20 million deal with Coors Brewing company gives Coors Light exclusive rights to NASCAR logos in advertising, packaging and promotions, as well as the right to brand the Pole Award.

And the Busch brothers? they gonna have to change their name now? WTF?!?!?!??!?!

Get over it, The same issues came up when we went from The Winston Cup to the Nextel Cup. You’ll get used to this too. everyone has their preference as to what beer they drink just like I thin Nextel/Sprint sucks but that doesnt mean NASCAR sucks because they change sponsors.

Don’t know if you were joking or not, but it got me thinking about that… If anything Bud, Miller, etc, will be grandfathered in like Cingular and Alltel were when Sprint/Nextel came in. Or perhaps Coors won’t give a flip and they’re not asking for exclusivity. Or perhaps NASCAR realizes the bind they put themselves in by allowing these exclusivity rights to sponsors and won’t agree to it with Coors! That would be the best case, IMO.

Yup. More bs drama over the sponsors coming up next year. -Sigh.- Does anyone else wish Nascar would revert back to the old days when this would be a completely laughable topic?

The silver bullet poll award ?

  20. 20 Anonymous

Coors can sponsor all they want. As long as I can still bring in My Canadian beer of Labatt Blue, coors can sponsor all they want.

Not like they are going to be stupid stuff to change the sport like Nextel did.

  21. 21 Andy Registered User

Never seen so many changes in one sport in such a little time in my life.
    Haha.
But if Jeff is right, Bud Shootout isn’t included, which is good.
