Car owner Richard Childress’ long-rumored fourth Cup team may be closer to fruition, according to sources. The big question is who the driver might be. As hot as Childress’ stuff is right now, potential drivers should be clogging the phone lines to his Welcome shop.

Jeff Burton, one of Childress’s drivers, was less than enthusiastic last year when a fourth team was proposed, for fear it would take away from the three other teams, which at that time weren’t very spiffy.

Now, however, Childress’ three men - Burton, Kevin Harvick and rookie Clint Bowyer - are all hot, and Bowyer has been a distinct plus for the operation.

I think it’s gonna be Dale Jr!

If his contract with DEI ends next year…I think he should go for it! Agreed?

Dale Jr going to Childress has a nice ring to it for sure but it won’t happen.

Jr. is a major part of DEI and he won’t giving that up…at least any time soon.

I wonder what number he will use for the 4th team. Do you think the 3 will come back or will he take a 5th number?

Doubtful they will use the 3.

NASCAR still discussing retiring the number.

first of all you cant retire a number in nascar because it is rented, if you retired the 3 then you would have to retire the 43 for petty, the 21 for pearson, the 2 for wallace, the numbers DW used, long story short it wouldnt work. why should some person who was racing before SR died be forced to change numbers if he used the 3 his whole career? personally i feel it would be wrong, however RCR does pay to keep it and Richard chooses not to use it. second, JR will probably not leave DEI for a very long time because it is part his company, its what his dad would have wanted and he knows that, plus they run very similar stuff as RCR so it wouldnt be a big change, if JR is ever in the 3 it will probably be at DEI
