Richard Childress said at Michigan Speedway on Friday that he is happy that Dale Earnhardt, Jr has made his decision where to drive in 2008 and beyond and told him to do what;s best for him.
“He made his decision,” Childress said. “All can I say is that I’m happy that he’s happy. That’s all I can say for him. I told him from day one, that I wanted him to stay at DEI. But if he left there, we wanted to talk. We talked.
“But I said, ‘At the end of the day, I want you to make the decision that is best for Dale Jr. Don’t do what the fans want or what everybody thinks is right. Do what’s right for Dale Jr.’”
Childress said Earnhardt Jr.’s decision won’t impact RCR’s plans to start a fourth team next year.
“We have plans to do a fourth team,” Childress said. “That was our plan at the end of last year. We haven’t changed our mind. We’re still looking at a fourth team.
“But it has to be the right situation - the right driver, the right crew chief, right everything has to come together to make it work. If it don’t, we’ll wait another year.”
Would new, hot free agent Kyle Busch classify as the ‘right’ driver?
“Sure,” Childress said. “Kyle’s a talented race driver. … Kyle has got a great future ahead of him.”
