Patrick CarpentierGillett Evernham Motorsports officials announced Tuesday that Sprint Cup driver Patrick Carpentier will skip the Aug. 3 race at Pocono Raceway to concentrate on the Nationwide Series event the same weekend in Montreal.

The team also announced that Subway restaurants will sponsor Carpentier’s No. 9 Dodge in Montreal.

“We know how amazing Patrick is at Montreal and want him to concentrate on winning that race like he almost did last year,” GEM CEO Tom Reddin said in a news release. “Montreal is Patrick’s hometown, and Subway restaurants will be a major presence throughout practice, qualifying and the race weekend. It will be good for Subway, our team, Patrick, NASCAR and our other partners.”

Reddin also said the team plans to announce a substitute driver for Carpentier at Pocono in the coming weeks.

Patrick coming back home to Canada is a huge thing for us. I hope he does well at the race in Montreal!

I definitely understand their decision. It’s his home race, and they don’t want to have to fly him back and forth to do both, especially with the stress of qualifying on time in Cup. I think if he was in the top 35 they would let him run both, but since he’s not, GEM just wants him to focus on his home race…because it is a big thing for him to come home.

I would say he’s a Cup driver first, Nationwide second. How does he gain confidence and experience by getting out of the car? So he’s going home for the Nationwide race. I believe anyone going to race at a track near home would want to win badly. But he’s a Cup driver first. Do we want another wreck like Dario had? Then what?

Dustin he is a Race Car Driver first and a Cup Racer second.

    Racers want to Race
    Racers want to Win
Racers want to Race were they have the best chance to Win.

Exactly, Fisha. Look at Boris; he picks and chooses which events he likes and wants to run. Nurburgring… Talledega…. other random stuff… Sonoma… He’s a racer, and Patrick is largely the same way.
