Carl EdwardsCarl Edwards was involved in a third-lap collision and left I-80 Speedway in the back of an ambulance. One track official said there had been talk of someone in the collision having a broken bone, and Carl’s father, Carl Sr., said his son’s hand “looked broken.”

Edwards started the 25-lap race on the inside of row eight and was making a charge into contention early when he hit the back of a car that had spun out and gotten into the wall along the backstretch. A 10-car pileup ensued and left Edwards’ car mangled. He walked to his trailer, where he received medical attention for nearly 20 minutes before emerging with a bag draped around his right hand. He gave the crowd one last wave before getting into the back of the ambulance.

Younger brother Kenny Edwards said Carl had been transferred to Lakeside Hospital in Omaha and was awaiting results. Kenny said he thought it was a broken thumb, probably caused when it was caught in the steering wheel during the collision. Kenny Edwards suffered the same injury in the collision and was shaking hands with his left hand after the race but said it wasn’t as severe as his brothers.

UPDATE:

Edwards is not testing today at the Milwaukee Mile and will not test a Busch Series car Tuesday at Bristol Motor Speedway but likely will race this weekend in the Busch and Nextel Cup events in Indianapolis. The Roush Fenway Racing driver was having his right hand examined today by a specialist in Columbia, Mo., to determine if there were any injuries, according to the team.

what is the cat in the hat going to say about this one? next week you will see some like “should cup drivers be alound to drive in other races other than cup races?” we will see who makes a big deal about it.

  3. 3 nichole yarborough

how in the hell is that funny?? I hope he is ok.

  6. 6 William

thats bad, i hope he is ok, and i think cup drivers should be able to race in other series. He has roots back to dirt track racing and late models so you all need to be quite about not beign able to race in other series

  7. 7 CC

It’s funny when a driver gets hurt?

  8. 8 Audey

    That is too bad.

  9. 9 Breanna.

Ahaha. It sucks that he got hurt, but that’s what you get for racing
in a real series where safety isn’t placed above competition.

  10. 10 BFDracing

That sucks! I sprained my hand on my steering wheel after losing my brakes in the Keyhole
at Mid-Ohio and ending up in the tires!

  11. 11 BFDracing

That sucks! I sprained my hand on my steering wheel after losing my brakes in the Keyhole at Mid-Ohio and ending up in the gravel.

    Axel you’re a friggin’ P.O.S. for thinking that’s funny! Go to hell…

    So are you Breanna!

  14. 14 marissa

oh my gosh, i hope that carl is ok. i don’t really see why it would funny that a driver got hurt. it just shows how sick people are, i guess.

  15. 15 Franco

You hear the same bitching stupid ____ from those two every week. What the hell else is new?!

  16. 16 Uncle Clem

this is hilarious………. if you are extremely immature

  17. 17 Nascarfan4life24

hopefully it wasn’t his jerk off hand. LOL!!!! Any ways, just kidding. hope he’s ok. It could have been worse.

  18. 18 Nascarfan4life24

and actually I don’t think they should be able to race at other races while under contract. You risk your ability to drive for your current boss. Look at Dale Jr. 2 years ago when he wrecked in the Corvette. He was out of the cup race for 2 or 3 weeks, forces his team to go to a back up driver. It should not be allowed.

  19. 19 Teresa

drivers being able to race in other smaller series is not just about them “getting back to their roots.” it’s a major pr/sponsor (money) deal, too. i remember a few years i go, when i was in wisconsin, we went to a race in beaver dam where both stewart and kahne were. (this was right after stewart wrecked kahne on a restart… y’all remember?) anyway, both drivers raced in the heats but in the feature, it was announced it was tony and the whole track believed it was… except it wasn’t, i roamed around the pits after the feature started and saw him tooling around in the back of his trailer… nonetheless, it’s about the names that are there. that’s why it was a big deal when elliot wasn’t able to make it to that race in canada. either way, i love them racing in their dirt (mostly) roots. it’s fun! oh, and i’m sure carl will be fine. he’s a racecar driver. most stubborn type of men i know. he’ll race and be fine.

  20. 20 Breanna.

Not b__ching, just pointing out that if you’re going to race in the
minor leagues stuff like this can happen and they know that so I’m
not going to pity him for it. Prove me wrong on that first part and
you’ll have a right to bash.

  21. 21 Breanna.

Also, try watching a rodeo. They break their hands and still do what
they do all the time. A broken hand hurts like hell but it’s not like
he snapped a vertebrae or something. Injuries are a part of racing.

  22. 22 Uncle Clem

Well Beanna, you can get hurt in ALL forms of racing. The fact that it is a minor series doesn’t mean s__t. Racing is a risk, the drivers already KNOW this.

Ask Dale Sr, Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty, Paul Dana, etc……what?…..you can’t.(and before you people get cra__y with me over the last part, the point was they all perished in MAJOR racing series…that’s all.)

Leave it to the youngsters to state the obvious.

  23. 23 Breanna.

I never said you can’t get hurt or killed in the major forms of racing,
I said there’s no point in pitying him when he chose to race the minor
series where they can’t put all that money into safety. And it’s a
    comparitively minor injury anyway.

Do me a favor and don’t turn this board into a discussion about me
    as well, mmk?

  25. 25 ray

    ahhaha so true

  26. 26 go24

    i hope carl is ok

  27. 27 Liz

hope Carl is okay and would some one please tell me y the hell that is funny

  28. 28 Anonymous

becuase liz their dumbasses, people just dont care like some person said if jeff was to die in a wreck it would be the happiest day in his life and and the happiest day in nascar

  29. 29 Breanna.

Of course I would be sad if somebody died or got seriously injured,
I just don’t see why everyone’s so concerned when it’s just a broken
hand. Like I said, it probably hurts like a mother but it’s not like
he’s going to die. Hell he’s probably not even going to miss a race.

  30. 30 Axel Foley

Haha, chill kids. Carl is one of my favorite drivers. I don’t think a hurt hand is gonna lead to his death. Its funny because I know people are going to be yelling about how drivers in Cup shouldn’t be driving anything else. Oddly enough, I fell on my hand Saturday and hurt it. Its swollen up like a orangutan’s ass. Laugh me to my grave.

Carl is in no risk of losing the Busch championship and on the reverse I don’t really think he is any threat for the Cup championship (this year). So, big friggin’ whoop. He’s got a whole career ahead of him.

Also, just because some of us dislike Gordon as a person doesn’t mean we would like to see him die or seriously injured. I like to see competition.

So, which of you hypocrites was laughing when Jimmie Johnson broke his wrist falling off the golf cart? Why cry when you could be laughing?

  31. 31 okeegirl

Sad to hear hope he’s ok.
I just dont get why if your that into racing why wouldnt you think its a good idea for them to race in dirt tracks. Oh wait some of you think its about the money, and sponsors. Drivers know the saftey aspecs of driving, minor or major leagues. Racing is about the sport not just the money! S___T happens when you race, saftey in place or not! which it is is those tracks, its called an accident and they happen!

  32. 32 Breanna.

What does any of that have to do with me being arrogant and self-centered?
As I basically want to spend the rest of my life organizing protests
and building battered partners shelters and the like, I really rather
    think not.

Baseless personal attacks aside, I never said I’d been through
the experience of driving a racecar around with a broken hand. But
you see drivers tough out worse injuries than this all the time in
the history of racing; I remember one instance where Dale Sr drove
at Watkins Glen with fractured vertebrae or something of the like.
So it’d be higly disappointing for him to not atleast give it a shot
and have a backup driver standing by.

Axel, once again, nailed it on the head. And I, too, had wondered how
many of the people now bleating on about poor Carl laughed when Johnson
    busted his hand.

  33. 33 Nascarfan4life24

But they should not be allowed to race othr venues while under contract some where else. It’s not the cup owners, or sponsors who pay your bills fault cuz you want to deviate from cup on your weekend off. If I was a owner, I would put it in the contract. You’repaid to work for me. I am not about to risk your ability to drive for me or our sponsors. It just isn’t right.

It’s kinda goes along with me. I’m a painter and tend to do side jobs on the weekend. But you bet your ass, if I injure myself on a weekend and can’t perform my duty’s during the week for my boss, he is going to have a problem with me doing side jobs again. In fact, I know he would give me an ultimatum.

“What does any of that have to do with me being arrogant and self-centered?”

maybe nothing, but, it IS so very true.

  36. 36 Breanna.

Whatever you say, chief. You don’t know me at all so you can’t judge
and it’s not like I’m not used to hearing that because, apparently,
truly believing what I believe makes me arrogant.

Nascarfan4life24-It should be about the racing, not the money. I
applaud Edwards for racing other things besides Cup, but s__t happens
and atleast it’s only a broken hand; could of been a lot worse.

  37. 37 Nascarfan4life24

You are right. It could have been alot worse. But when Jr. wrecked his Corvette in the Sports car race he put his championship in jeapardy cuz they had to go to a back up driver. Had he not burned himself like he did, he would have finished better that year. Thats what I’m getting at. Yes it does have alot to do with money, but it’s also about compitition, wins and championships. Thats all I’m saying. When you’re dealing with millions of dollars, I feel you shouldn’t deviate. Thats my opiion and I’m sure it won’t make a difference. I disagreed when Jeff Gordon jumped in that Rolex car and did the 24 hr thing. He’s on his way to win his 5th Cup this year. What do you think would have happened to his chance had he injured himself and couldn’t perform in his fulltime ride? But anyways, nothing I say is going to change it but just thought I would share some feelings.

  38. 38 Ryan

You guys act like they put no safety in the minor leagues. His hand was caught in the stearing wheel from what the article said. So why you guys blaming safety? It could have happend in NASCAR. His hand could have gotten caught in the steering wheel. So you guys need to quit acting like there is no safety in the minor leagues and realize they are just as safe as a NASCAR car, or mabey even safer since they arent going the same speeds.

  39. 39 Breanna.

My point with that wasn’t that there’s no safety in minor series; I
know there is, I have three relatives that race local short tracks.
I was just saying the minor series aren’t the financial powerhouse
that Nascar is so they can’t put millions of dollars into new safety
innovations and that you’re probably more likely to get an injury
when racing in the short track cars because of that. Not necessarily
even because of the cars but because of the lack of safer barriers, etc.

  40. 40 Anonymous

I saw the accident in question…the issue of safety at a local track DOES NOT APPLY in this case!

A car was sideways in the middle of the track and there was not enough space to stop before a collision took place. His thumb was injured when the stearing wheel violently spun around. His only recourse would be to let go of the wheel, but, the whole thing happened VERY quickly.

  41. 41 Axel Foley

Drivers are built for driving. If there was a zero tolerance clause for drivers in Cup I think that would make alot of drivers think twice before becoming a NASCAR driver. I do understand that it is a little risky and not the best thing for the team as a whole to have a driver dabbling in other series but this is a tough problem to solve. If one owner makes a contract clause to limit participation on other series that is going to set a precedent that I think most of the garage isn’t going to be happy with.

Also, Junior was very close to being burned alive in that Corvette crash at Sonoma, but I still get a thrill out of watching him race other stuff to this day. Racing is safer than its ever been. There are risks involved with just breathing air.
