Carl Edwards has apologized for his tirade against Tony Stewart for an incident at Pocono Raceway.
During the July 23 Pennsylvania 500, Stewart bumped Clint Bowyer, who spun and crashed into Edwards. After the race, Edwards said, among other things, that Stewart was a “jerk” and “spectacularly self-centered.”
“Let me just say this, if it weren’t for respect of the sport and the people watching and his team and everything, he’d be out there bleeding right now,” Stewart said that day.
Edwards never backed off those comments, and earlier this month Stewart launched a counter-attack on his Sirius Satellite Radio show.
“The next time I hear Carl Edwards tell me that he’s going to make me bleed, he’d better be ready to do it right then and there,” Stewart said.
On Monday at Daytona International Speedway, Edwards said he wanted to start the 2007 fresh and apologized.
“What happened there was, Tony wrecked the [No.] 07, and I got caught up in it,”
Edwards said. “What I did wrong was I got out of the car and made it a personal attack and said some things shouldn’t have said. Obviously, I really upset Tony. For that, I apologize. I shouldn’t have done that.
