Jimmie JohnsonRain washed out qualifying Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, giving Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon front-row spots when the field was set by last season’s points.

“I’ll take it any way I can get it,” said Johnson, the two-time defending Sprint Cup champion who is off to an uncharacteristically horrendous start to the season.

He finished second in California, but was 27th, 29th and 13th in the three other races this season. He’s currently 13th in the points.

Clint Bowyer will start third Sunday on the concrete bullring.

just great. So hornish could hardly finish a lap in practice and he now starts in 7th. Gotta love the points swap. Anybody wanna take a bet on how many laps, or turns, till he takes out my fantasy team? Gotta say it will be fun to watch kyle try and plow to the front though, wonder if he makes it.

The race is on Sunday right? They only have Cup Practice and the Nationwide race for tomorrow right? So why not just qualify tomorrow night? Or better yet Sunday Morning?

why use last years points to start this years race ?

  6. 6 Fisha695 Registered User

For the same reason somebody who won a championship 40 years ago can be guaranteed to make the race.

Last year’s points leaders? Why not 2006 or ‘05? This is THIS year…not last year! What a joke!!

It is set like that for the first 5 races for the top 35. If you are outside the top 35 but a Past champ you get in, if you are outside the top 35 but won a race last year (kurt Busch) you get in. The rest of the outside top 35 people get set on this years points.

Its been like this for a couple of years now.

Yeah folks this isn’t anything new that they just pulled out of thin air. It’s been this way for some time. I too don’t understand why they can’t just work qualifying in sometime this weekend before the race. That’s NASCAR for ya!

Mine was a rhetorical question on why they used last years points to put JJ & Gordo on the poll.
I know what the formula is but can’t see why it can’t be changed to represent the new year points standings.
It just gives the last years winners a better start THIS year and has nothing to do with representing the drivers efforts of THIS season…
I also agree that a attempt to qualify today or tomorrow morning should have been made.
NASCAR could have set the field at any time if it didn’t work out but decided to jump on a chance to put Hendricks drivers on the front row and outa harms way for the start…
