Blaney slapped by NASCAR for trying to avoid wreck
Quote selected text Published February 19th, 2007 in NASCAR News
Dave Blaney and the team ran into misfortune on lap 185 of the 200-lap Daytona 500, as Blaney drove down pit road to avoid an accident on the frontstretch. With a flat right-front tire, he was unable to avoid making contact with several cars as he exited pit road. After making a lap around the track, he headed back to pit road for four fresh tires and to give the Caterpillar team the opportunity to review any damage the contact may have made.
Unfortunately, NASCAR officials were none too pleased with the speed the Caterpillar Toyota reached on pit lane while trying to avoid the accident, and after first assessing the team a five lap penalty, they then decided to send the #22 to the garage for the remainder of the race. Blaney was credited with a 34th-place finish.

WEll that was just bull wasn’t it. What’s up with NASCAR these and has anyone ever seen the elusive rule book. I think the pull it ouf of their well you know what. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for a while now. They need to stop. Come out with an actual hand written rule book and what happens if you break them. If necessary it can be revised but give the guys in the cars and in the pits the chance to know eactly what the del is. Maybe they just don’t want to listne to their long time fans.
Well Blaney should have slowed down, my god! He could have hurt someone. I wasn’t too happy that he run smack into Shrader and ruined Shraders day. There was no need for his actions, he should have slowed down while in the pits. And definitly not entered the race track going that fast, he is very lucky no one got hurt. So yes Nascar should do something about that! Of course this incident isn’t in the rule book, no one has done that.
Quit complaining he sped down pit road to avoid the ensuing accident…the only thing is he didn’t knw he had a right front tire going down and he misjudged how fast he could safely get back onto the track! Ya’ll would of pissed yourselves if you were in his position.! I do agree w/ what you’ve said about NASCAR and the ongoing penalties…they are really out of hand and are extremely inconsistent with what they are doing out on the track!
Id hate to tell ya this but Nascar does have it in the rule book that you can speed down pit road to avoid a crash. i’ll agree Blaney was going way too fast, but he did have a down right front tire which would have made nailing his foot to the brakes a bad move. it was just a bad luck deal
I don’t have a problem with Blaney speeding down pit road, but his entry on to the track was unacceptable. He looked like a 16 year old kid trying to merge on the highway for the first time. He was wreckless and could have taken a lot of cars out. I would park him for the next race.
the hole intire rule of going down pit lane and trying to slow is B.S. if the guys on pit lane arent paying attechen then its there falt and theres hardly ever a guy just sitting on pit lane in the box’s so theres no point to even having that rule and he was trying to slow bc if he wasnt his tires wouldnt have been flat, key the resion he couldnt stop or turn. and how does sometimes a guy will get 1 lap and other times its more, they really need to set a specific rule for it
thats crap he shouldnt get a penalty for avoiding a wreck
My feeling is that it was okay for him to avoid the wreck by going down Pitt Road, however I think that if you cause a crash coming back onto the speedway you should be penalized.
I wouldnt expect anything less of Blaney. He’s a joke.
