AJ AllmendingerA.J. Allmendinger ended a celebrated season in open-wheel racing by jumping to NASCAR, yet after four races in the Nextel Cup stock car series this year he has yet to see the green flag.

Driving for one of the new Toyota teams, Red Bull, Allmendinger wasn’t fast enough to qualify for any of the four races. He’ll try again Friday at the half-mile Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, site of Sunday’s Food City 500.

To complicate matters, Allmendinger this time has to qualify in the “Car of Tomorrow,” the newly designed car that NASCAR is requiring teams to use starting with the Bristol race.

It’s been a disappointing start for the Hollister, Calif., native, who won five races in the Champ Car World Series last year and even made a run at the series championship.

But Allmendinger, 25, said he has no regrets and remains confident he’ll soon be racing against NASCAR’s top drivers. “I’ll never regret making the change,” he said in a telephone interview. “NASCAR is probably the most competitive racing in all the world, and that’s what I want.”

I think AJ can do it if Red Bull gives him a car that is capable. Bristol is a good place as well, but who
knows how much short track experience he has with the road racing background. If he was a Midget or Sprint car
driver I would say it was a lock! At least the COT will level the playing field.

He sold out for money for of all things….Neckcar.

    Good Riddance AJ

of course he has no regrets. he gets paid to go to the same races we pay to attend, plus he gets better access. C’mon you might as well be talking to a third string QB.

He’s a race car driver who happens to not actually race. You know how when it gets slow at work people try to find things for you to do? I wonder what Red Bull is finding for A.J. to do to supplement his lack of on track time. Team cook? Setting up all the tires for race day? Watching the radar for inclement weather to alert Vickers? I thought finishing 43rd in a race was bad, this dude would kill for that finish right now.

Well he’s doing better than Waltrip now….he’s starting the race.
