AJ Allmendinger, originally expected back in the seat of the No. 84 Red Bull Racing Toyota April 12 at Phoenix, said Friday he will not return until the following week at Talladega.
Mike Skinner made his first appearance in the No. 84 at Las Vegas and has a best finish of 27th (at Atlanta) in four starts entering Texas. The veteran and former Craftsman Truck Series champion has mentored Allmendinger, who is in his second Cup season.
“He’s said the same things that I’ve been saying, so just more than anything there’s a peace of mind of getting back in the car and [saying], ‘OK, so I’m not crazy. I am feeling the right things,” Allmendinger said.
Allmendinger has tested for the team at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway and Nashville during his hiatus from competition.
“I’ve learned a lot outside the race car, I think it’s gonna give me a better perspective when I get back in it,” he said.

Pull him out of the Cup car to put skinner in and Develop AJ, but then only Develop AJ by making him follow Skinner around and not putting him in a ride in Nationwide or CTS… thats not really development, and As much as AJ might have learned, he hasn’t gotten any more experience in these big heavy stockcars.
I dont think they have their act together and AJ is the scapegoat.
And its unfortunate for AJ because he was kinda dragged into their NASCAR program. He didn’t want to leave his sponsor (or Open-Wheel racing), but Red Bull said you either have to race NASCAR or start searching for another sponsor, and well AJ picked being loyal to the sponsor.
