Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson says a gash to the middle finger on his left hand won’t keep him from any events during Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway.
The three-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion required repair of a tendon and nerve after cutting his finger with a kitchen knife Sunday afternoon. The injury occurred while Johnson was preparing to compete in the final segment of the Rolex 24 At Daytona as the knife slipped as he was attempting to cut a small hole in his firesuit in order to feed a tube from a cooling shirt through the pocket of his suit.
Johnson did not compete after suffering the injury. He went to a hand specialist in Charlotte, N.C., and has clearance to race.
“That certainly wasn’t the way I wanted to end the Rolex race,” said Johnson, who ran with the Bob Stallings Racing team at Daytona. “I really appreciate all the hard work by the guys this weekend. I’m just sorry I wasn’t there at the end with them.
“The doctors did a great job in Daytona and Charlotte and I can’t thank them enough. Everything feels good and I’ll be ready to roll for Daytona.”
I will bet his wife has banned him from ever touching a knife again but seriously that had to hurt.
I guess he should have used a KOBOLT knive from LOWES. darn I hate tose cheap knives from WALMART…
In my opinion this just shows how the sport has gone from a mans man who can handle any tool to pretty boys who have talent for driving. I say to bad he wasnt using a sawz-all.
i think jimmie should have know better be a 4 time champ
