UPDATE:
Dario Franchitti broke his left ankle in a hard crash Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway that sent him and another racer to a hospital for observation.
Franchitti, who came to NASCAR this season as the reigning IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, also was treated for contusions and was unlikely to race Sunday in the Sprint Cup event.
Chip Ganassi Racing didn’t immediately announce a replacement driver, but David Stremme said following the race that the team had approached him about filling in. Stremme drove that car for two seasons before he was replaced by Franchitti this season.

Dario Franchitti was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation after being involved in a multicar accident during the Aaron’s 312 Nationwide Series race Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.
Dario Franchitti was taken to a hospital after spinning out and hitting a wall after a tire problem on Lap 12 of Saturday’s Aaron’s 312 Nationwide Series race at Talladega. Franchitti gingerly walked away from his car after the accident on his way to the ambulance, but immediate information about his condition was not available.
Franchitti spun and hit the wall after an apparent tire problem on Lap 12. His No. 40 Dodge slid down the track in the grass on the backstretch before being rammed on the driver’s side door panel by the car of Larry Gunselman.
the flying spaghetti monster was watching over him. He will be fine.
on a serious note that was a nasty hit im surprised he even got out on his own
That was a nasty hit. I thought it was worse than it was. Welcome to NASCAR Dario. Where else can an international star like yourself almost get killed by a perennial backmarker like Gunselman? I know things happen quickly but it’s usually the same rockheads every time they make a race. I had flashbacks of Bobby Allison’s wreck that ended his driving career in 1988. Thank god these cars are well built and have to be inspected.
That was some crash. I cant believe he actually got out on his own.
I just hope he doesnt try to return before his body is 100% lingering injuries can put you behind the 8 ball.
He flipped like what 3 times last year in an open cockpit openwheel car and didn’t get hurt at all, but he gets in what in the world of racing is considered a relatively mild crash, and he gets hurt.
Just goes to show you that just because a car looks like it’ll be safer doesn’t mean it will be.
Glad he’s ok, and like George said, I hope he doesn’t return until he is 100% healed up.
Sad when a guy 8 seconds after you wreck comes along and smashes into you almost full speed. Get better Dario!
