Fernando Alonso says he does not regret signing a contract to switch to McLaren for the 2007 season.
“I know that next year they will have the best car,” the Spaniard, on a flying visit to Barcelona and almost drowned in the cheers of countrymen, was quoted as saying by AS.
Alonso admitted that he is ‘getting close’ to repeating the achievement in a Renault.
Nevertheless, Mercedes-powered McLaren is the next target, and he insisted: “I will try to win the title there. But my first task is to finish the job with Renault with a second title.”
Alonso, however, revealed that dominating in 2006 is not as straightforward as last year, when McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen were the main foes.
“Last year McLaren were unreliable,” he said, “so that often when we scored we could pull out some gaps. This year Ferrari are very reliable and have responded to us well. They are a complicated rival.”
Alonso’s comments, of course, are backed up by F1′s recent trip to Indianapolis, where Michael Schumacher’s red car dominated the event.
“We were not competitive,” he conceded.
