GEM and Petty look at merger

Petty Enterprises, NASCAR’s most storied organization, is open to a change of ownership. The two-car operation owned by seven-time champion Richard Petty is having discussions with Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett Jr. that would allow it to merge with Gillett Evernham Motorsports and form a four-car Nextel Cup organization.

Joe Gibbs Racing, which will move from Chevrolet to Toyota next season, will not be allowed in any Chevrolet meetings the rest of this year that focus on 2008, according to a General Motors executive.

Hendrick Motorsports has a sponsor for Dale Earnhardt Jr., but Rick Hendrick isn’t saying who it is.

Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick says that Dale Earnhardt, Jr will not use the No 25 next season and that the team will not use the number next year. “The curse of the 25, I’ve heard that so many times,” Hendrick said. “[The No. 25] meant a lot to me over the years.

George Gillett, majority owner of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, said Canadian racer Patrick Carpentier will drive a Cup car for them during the Chase this season and probably will race full time in Cup for GEM next year.
